Post Game: Mets Spank Johnson, Ravage Stinky Fish

Ooh ooh that smell, it must be the Marlins!

Ooh ooh that smell, it must be the Marlins!

The New York Mets showed the Florida Marlins how to abuse a Johnson, spanking Florida’s ace Josh for 4 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings, then the stinky Fish defense wafted over Citi Field as the Marlins tossed the ball around aimlessly allowing the Mets to tack on 3 more runs for a 7-1 Mets victory.

Marlins starter Josh Johnson (0-1) entered the game 7-0 lifetime versus the Mets.  After the bottom of the 1st inning he was trailing 2-0 thanks to an opposite-field 2-run homer by David Wright (1).  The Mets never trailed.  The Marlins only run came on a 6th inning RBI double by Jorge Cantu.  Then in the bottom of the 6th Johnson gave up a lead off triple to new Met LF Jason Bay followed by a walk to new Met CF Gary Matthews Jr. and his manager had seen enough.  Johnson was replaced by reliever Clay Hensley with no outs and runners on the corners.

Hensley promptly gave up a sacrifice fly to RF Jeff Francoeur.  At this point the Fish really began to stink.  Hensley made an errant pick off throw to 1B allowing Matthews Jr. to move into scoring position.  C Rod Barajas then doubled over the head of Marlin CF Cameron Maybin plating Matthews Jr. for a 4-1 Mets lead.  Angel Pagan pinch hit for Mets starter Johan Santana and singled to CF scoring Barajas and the Mets led 5-1.  Hensley was replaced by relief pitcher Dan Meyer who got in on the act quickly, making an errant toss of his own on a pick off play at 1B which allowed Pagan to move up to 3B.  An RBI ground out by SS Alex Cora brought home Pagan for a 6-1 Mets lead.

The Mets finished off the scoring in the 7th inning.  Marlins reliever Tim Wood surrendered an RBI double to Francoeur that fell between 3 Marlins defenders who were looking at each other instead of the ball for the final 7-1 margin.  Santana (1-0) picked up the win with 6 innings of 4-hit ball.  Fernando Nieve (2 scoreless innings) and Francisco Rodriguez (1 scoreless inning) finished up the game.

    Fantastic!
Now, if only Jerry would drop Jacobs to the 6 spot and Cora to the 7 spot.

just drop Jacobs to the DFA line where he should have been all along.

He is as close as there is to an automatic out in any big spot, with a good pitcher on the mound that really needs an out.

I will give him a week before I completely write him off, but his start is not trending in the desirable direction.

Any game we win is always a nice game. Welcome to Citi Fields Jason Bay. Looking forward to watching him splitting the outfielders with balls that go all the way to the wall for extra base hits.

KRod got off to another good start even though he gets no save and there was no pressure with a 7-1 score but it was good to see him go out and pitch.

What can you say about Wright it almost was unreal to watch him step to the plate and hit an opposite field homer in his 1st at bat of 2010 off Johnson.

I hate to say it but the true test of this team is yet to come with MOP getting ready to pitch in real games. 1 game at a time I guess :-) 89 wins away from doing the unheard of.

Grave, you are one real dirty mets fan. Gladly, Wang wasn’t part of this fiasco.

Awesome first post-game of the season Grave! I’m glad you could make one for a win. :)

A fun day all around. They did the little things well too – Matthews is a true pro, Bay hustled all over the place, there were smart ABs and productive outs. DWright going oppo field yard two seconds after they showed a replay of him doing the same off of Johnson in ST was great. The Marlins never fail to amaze with their mental miscues.

PS: How’d that batting Jacobs cleanup work out Jerry?

Grave, I think I look forward to your postgames more than anything else on the site.

Who else could work in a snippet of Skynyrd and a picture of LBJ; on Opening Day no less!

    :-)

I hear Hayword hit a 3 run HR his first at bat?

Ah, once again the best post game write ups out there. Love the graphics.

Good game all the way around for the boys – except for our resident clean up hitter. As others have asked: ‘how’ that working out for you, Jerry?’.

Glad to see the bottom of the order doing their part as well.

Great start to the 2010 season.

And nice to see some things don’t change, like the Marlins defense – or lack thereof. I guess that’s what you can expect with such a young team. Something to think about for us wanting to see Thole and Ike and Tejada and all the rest of the youngun’s make their debut all at once.
