TRDMB: Did You Know?

Did You Know that 20 year old Jenrry Mejia is the youngest pitcher to be on the Mets Opening Day roster since 19 year old Dwight Gooden in 1984?

    I did not know.

Now that mejia is here, I hope he has great success as the setup man and easily transitions to the rotation next year.

    1. DNDJohan aka kistics

      Me too.

  3. GravediggerHebner

So he is on the roster then. As of last night he wasn’t according to Rubin’s tweets, which I see he says 2 minutes ago Mets waived Shawn Bowman. Nick of time there Metsies!

      Phwew…

    2. stickguy

that was the biggest stiff left on the 40 man roster? Interesting.

      1. GravediggerHebner

Not in my opinion, but I am guessing they didn’t want to waive a pitcher for the very realistic fear they will be blowing through lots of those, so they looked at 3B and thought “well we have David Wright to play on the ML club and we signed Mike Cervanek for Buffalo so Bowman’s the most expendable.”

Last night when I noticed the issue my guess was they would waive Nick Evans.

        1. stickguy

no particular reason, but I think we will be seeing Mr. Evans again this year in NY.

Would have been a better bench option than Cat (assuming his injury issue from ST healed up, I have no idea about that) as the platoon guy for jacobs.

because just based on his career splits, Jacobs really needs one. And it gags me that they are using Tatis in that role.

Sometimes the thought process of the MEt FO escapes me.

Screw it. While I am at it, F Mart (while not being the best development method) should be up platooning with Frenchy.

Considering that jacobs and Francouer have some of th emost extreme split differentials out there, they both screm for a platoon partner (especially since they aren’t the greatest fielders in the world to make up for it).

          1. njstuckintx

Frenchy not a good outfielder? I have to scratch my head at that statement.

          2. stickguy

I didn’t say he wasn’t any good. He is a solid fielder, average range, and a strong arm.

My point was that while average (or whatever frenchy qualifies at) is good, he isn’t such a defensive + to make up for lousy numbers against RH pitching.

So, if you got another guy that is as good with the glove but can hit RH pitching much better, natural platoon.

Hey, I guarantee Bobby V would do it!

          3. njstuckintx

Fair enough to your point. I always viewed him as a a defensive gem, solely due to his arm. He may not make the over the wall catches, but he stops a run from comeing in on the single with a man on 2nd.

I’d play him every day to get 1 of 3 results.

            1. He rips it up. – couldn’t ask for more
            2. He does decent, shows some value and can be moved for pitching, with F-mart taking over.
            3. He sucks it up, is benched/something more drastic and F-Mart takes over.

I like him as a person and his interviews and such, but to me this is his last year here. I can’t see him holding back Fmart & he’s starting to get costly.

Can the Mets pick up Cust from the Waivers?

    1. GravediggerHebner

They can but I doubt very much that they will. I think if they did he would be an older more expensive Chris Carter, and would mean Carter has zero chance of seeing the ML club.

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

        you are right.

      2. Kingman 26

But Grave, Cust is a guy who has had proven major league success…..lots of Ks, but look at those HR and BB. If he would go for it, he would be like having a mini-Adam Dunn on the bench.

Carter has proven he is a pretty good AAA player, nothing more.

        1. stickguy

Kong, I think you need to give this one a rest. You are seriously starting to reach here.

          1. Kingman 26

            ?

Jack Cust has 3 seasons with 25 HR and about 100 BB. In the majors.

Chris Carter has 26 MLB plate appearances.

Certainly not targeting you Grave; people just tend to go for something new, even if it is Carter, Dessens, Figgy, Misch, etc. Generally there is a reason a guy like Carter or Pascucci doesn’t make the majors.

          2. stickguy

by your logic, BB will have to shut down in a few years, since we can never take a guy out of the minors, and they will run out of players!

Cust at his point is a DH, and basically Mike Jacobs with a little better OBP (but less slugging).

ANd I know you are big on improvement, and CUst is now 31, and for the last 3 years, has delcined noticeably at the ML level. OBP and Slg dropping, and Ks increasing.

And since he isn’t an upgrade over any of the options at 1B, what exactly are the Mets supposed to do with him? Actually, he never played 1B at all (hey, this sounds like Mike Lowell!), so he is a PH/corner OF type.

SO, are you looking for him to be the power bat off te bench/emergency 5th OF, or a FT platoon guy?

Someone though should pick him up to DH.

        2. GravediggerHebner

Fair point, I should’ve added “more established” to “older and more expensive.”

But in my opinion neither guy would be on the 25 man roster right now, so Cust if he were willing would likely replace Carter at AAA as the “DH depth” because I believe despite relevant protests to the contrary that Catalanotto is here over Carter because he at least has experience at many defensive positions as well as as a pinch hitter. Therefore I believe if the organization chose Cat over Carter they would choose Cat over Cust.

Another factor: the 40 man is full and Carter is on it. Someone would have to be waived to make room for Cust.

          1. DNDJohan aka kistics

            Waive Green.

          2. GravediggerHebner

They could and I wouldn’t complain but I bet they’d replace him with a different pitcher. To accommodate Cust it’s a position player that would probably have to go. Evans? Pridie? Santos?

          3. stickguy

I suppose Evans is an odd man out, but I wouldn’t give up on him just yet.

And Pridie and Santos are actually decent depth, so I doubt they wil lgo anywhere.

Of course, as soon as a major (60 day DL) injury hits, that frees up a space onthe 40 man!

          4. GravediggerHebner

There you go! I bet they could’ve kept Shawn Bowman and just put Kelvim Escobar on the 60 day DL. Do any of us think we’re going to see Kelvim before June anyway, if at all?

  5. Mr North Jersey

]OFF TOPIC] I like the mets toolbar. I added wfan to the radio and I feel good.

    1. DNDJohan aka kistics

      what Mets toolbar?

      1. Mr North Jersey

        1. DNDJohan aka kistics

          Thanks!

  6. stickguy

This off season and ST seemed to last about 2 years. So glad that we can finally see the group in action.

And of course, starting complaining about what guys are actually doing, instead of what people expect them do do!

Man, a good first week will be nice to see. I actually do believe the rotation will look OK, but I have no idea what the hell we will get out of Ollie.

    1. GravediggerHebner

In the context of complaining about what guys are actually doing, my guess is the first opportunity I’ll have to do that is if Cora (somehow) gets on base in the bottom of the 1st inning and then Castillo attempts to bunt him over.

      1. Kingman 26

        HAHA!

That would be an IDEAL and appropriate first inning.

      2. DNDJohan aka kistics

Speaking of Castillo, I picked him up off the waivers today to replace Kinsler. I hope he swings for the fences once Cora gets on the base and hits a HR left handed against JJ!

        ha!

        1. GravediggerHebner

I saw that, it made me feel a tiny iota better about having picked up ODog the day before.

          1. DNDJohan aka kistics

That I probably would’ve picked up ODog if he was available.

My choices were Castillo or Placebo…. Castillo is probably the worse choice, but I just could not pick up a Philly…

          2. prismo

You gotta do what’s best for the team!

I realized earlier today that I have 4 Braves on my team. Oh well! I hope they do well, but the Braves lose anyway.

          3. njstuckintx

It took me a while to figure out I could DL some people.

And Castillo made me chuckle. There wasn’t any other option out there?

          4. DNDJohan aka kistics

            it was castillo or placebo

          5. njstuckintx

            Ick.

          6. GravediggerHebner

Yeah, Castillo vs. Johnson & Nolasco or Placebo vs. Lannan & Marquis, I would’ve made the same choice. ;-) ~

          7. njstuckintx

Looks like Castillo was the right call. :P

  7. metsfan4decades

Ah, SNY Pregame show. All is right with the world….

    1. metsfan4decades

Very nice job with their opening ‘Redemption’ montage.

  8. rustyjr

At the game – citi looms amazin !! The museum exceeds all expectations !

    1. rustyjr

      *looks

    2. metsfan4decades

SNY hour long pregame is going to show some of the new addition, includng the museum – up next.
I’m sure it won’t be half as good as being there though. Enjoy!

  9. metsfan4decades

    LOL – Lennon tweet:

Gary Matthews said spent OD eve watching “that other team in town, who will remain nameless.” Already endearing himself to #mets fans.

    1. GravediggerHebner

      Haha! Nice job GMat!

My most immediate wish is that the fans at the park will NOT boo Sean Green when he’s introduced. Give him one day folks, the booing Scott Scho on OD didn’t exactly end well.

      1. metsfan4decades

        Agreed.
Well, introducing the support staff right now and I didn’t hear any booing for the Mets trainers and conditioning trainer staff….

        1. GravediggerHebner

          LOL, that’s a good sign.

        2. GravediggerHebner

I couldn’t really hear any reaction to Green. That’s better than BOOOO!

  10. stickguy

I think I may go insane if Castillo sac bunts in te 1st inning on OD.

If you all notice, I have actually been leaving him alone recently. I decided to just hope he can at least hold his current level of slightly obove mediocrity for now.

  11. GravediggerHebner

I bet Francoeur swings at the ceremonial first pitch.

    1. njstuckintx

      That made me chuckle.

Can you imagine though? Him jacking the ceremonial first pitch… That would generate some buzz around the league and blogospheres alike.
