This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty ” The Do You Know What I Hate Edition” 04-07-10

Oh it felt so good to bask in the glory of the traditional Mets Opening Day victory. But it is also sweeter when the Yankees lose their first game of the season. So I went to work yesterday, with a aura of confidence about the just started season – or was it the sunburn that I had developed from not applying enough sunscreen ? Anywho I am discussing with some of my coworkers that are die hard Yankee fans how great Citi Field looked and that the Mets got all the nuances right with the new museum/ Hall of Fame , and how there seemed to be for the most part a sense of positivity in the atmosphere. Then this Yankee fan who I shall name ” Charloots” to protect his identity (because he is a good soul – even though he roots for the Skanks), proceeded to tell me what was wrong with my team, how we were gonna finish with a 81-81 record at best, and oh yeah the kicker – How the Yankee broadcasting team is better than our holy trinity of Gary , Keith and Ron ! I was flabbergasted ! So I proceeded to argue that with the exception of Ken Singleton, all of the Yankee broadcasters are essentially homers that force feed Yankee propaganda to their followers that blindly follow them. Michael Kay in my opinion is the Bill O’Reilley of the Yankee broadcasters, while John Sterling is the Rush Limbaugh. Suzyn Waldman is the Tokyo Rose of the bunch, she is utilized on broadcasts not for color commentary, not for her wittiness, but to be Sterling’s lap dog ( agreeing with him without showing dissension). I admit that I try not to listen to Yankee games if I have to, but when you hear Kay say ” It’s a beautiful day in Baltimore” when in actuality he’s in Boston – one of the biggest rivalries in all of baseball, well then it’s hard to take him seriously. I am not saying that the Mets are not without their flaws. Keith is probably one of the most non sequiter spouting baseball analysts I have ever listened to, but he is funnier than hell and the game goes by faster when he is on the air ( or so it seems). The other quality that separates the two broadcasting teams is the fact that Gary, Keith and Ron do bring a unabashed unbiaseness when they provide commentary . During last years lost season , they didn’t sugar coat the fact that this team was imploding, they didn’t try to sell false hope. If anything they chastised the Mets brass for it’s ineptitude and the players for their perceived lack of effort.
But in the end do you think I was able to get through this poor souls head? Of course not , But look you don’t have to be smart to be a Yankees fan. here’s my case in point.

                                                                                                 ” Exhibit A”

And with that said ….. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!

Happy Birthday wishes go out to reserve outfielder from the ’63 season, Joe Hicks (1933) . Joe spent one year with the Mets, batting .226 with five homeruns and twenty-two r.b.i’s.

New York Mets signed free agent, and one time Rookie of the Year – catcher, Clint Hurdle on April 7, 1983. Clint was most recently the manager for the Colorado Rockies last year before being fired mid season.

New York Mets signed free agent pitcher Bob ‘Not that Bob” Gibson on April 7, 1987.

Cincinnati Reds claimed Pete Schourek of the New York Mets on waivers on April 7, 1994.

And the Mo Vaughn tidbit of the day – His favorite movie is ” Like Water For Chocolate”.

Yesterday was a great day for the same reason. I bet my coworker that the Yankee bullpen will have more losses than our rotation.

Kay’s also the guy that tried to sell the Yankees still had a chance at the playoffs late in 2008 when it was all but over.

He also (no media/radio hosts understand this one) doesn’t understand that talking about the talk involving AJ and Posada is actually what makes it a story, and if it was not a big deal he’d shut up and so would others and it wouldn’t BE a story.

A-rod meet with the Feds yet? Gonna sic Jack Bauer on him?

    There’s fans and then there’s homers….

Yankees have a better booth than Mets/SNY? Just stop…..
Poll NY Metro Yankees fans with access to YES and I’ll bet the majority of them will tell you that isn’t so.

WFAN routinely makes fun (tongue in cheek) of John Sterling’s calls. For example, last night after the game Steve Somers couldn’t wait to air John’s call of the Yankee HR that wasn’t a HR – it never did go over the wall. He had to back peddle on that one. Steve wanted to know why he doesn’t routinely wait for the umps call on those.

After they took Burnett out last night, Suzyn W. commented ‘Burnett pitched a really good game’. Made me wonder if she actually watched him pitch last night – or what she considers a quality start from a SP.

I can’t comment about Michael Kay because I’ve never heard his show.

I’ll agree with you about Keith. He knows his baseball though and is unbiased, to a fault sometimes. Like you said though, he adds a personality in that booth that makes the 3 of them what they are – the best booth in MLB.

    Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh?

Damn, even I don’t think they are THAT horrible!

    :-)

When (actually in Baltimore) ARoid returned from his hip surgery/steroid admission layoff, with the part of the crowd that was actually rooting for Baltimore booing loudly and waving giant inflatable syringes, then in his first at bat hit a home run, Michael Kay described the scene to viewers as “a fairytale ending.”

    Douche.

Will the Yanks be screwed when his hip fails midseason this year?

        I generally don’t wish I’ll will – but I hope so :p

It’s very odd, isn’t it? How his ‘need another surgery’ hip both held up and didn’t need another surgery? It’s almost like he was taking some magical healing potion or something..

      Douche is right.
