All right so by now everyone knows that Nelson Figueroa was claimed by the Phillies. If you haven’t here is the link with the announcement.
So how do you choose to view this? Are you a glass half full type of person?
- The Phillies bullpen must not be that good if they need Figueroa a pitcher that couldn’t make our team.
- Figueroa always did say he wanted to help the Mets win now is his chance.
Or are you a glass half empty type of person?
- The Mets made a mistake letting Figueroa go now he will make them pay for not holding on to him.
- If the Phillies picked him up you know he must have value. The Mets dropped the ball.

What would happen in a normal world: Figueroa would be as bad as his career suggests he should be pitching so poorly that even the Phils vaunted offense cannot overcome the vast amount of runs he allows, including a start against the Mets during the teams’ upcoming series in which Figueroa starts but is knocked out after allowing 8 runs and recording no outs, blowing up their bullpen for the whole series.
What happens in a Mets fan world: Figueroa is called on to start against the Mets in the series that occurs at the end of this month and tosses a no-hitter, in which two key Mets players suffer significant injuries. He goes on to keep the Phils atop the division with quality starts until Blanton returns, then admirably fills a long relief role for them as they roll to another title and we get to watch him sip champagne and be fitted for a ring.

What Grave said!
Basically, I think Figgy is a AAAA player, but this will still somehow hurt the Mets…

Some see the glass as half full, others as half empty. I just wonder who the hell is drinking my beer!

I think this is going to be somewhere in the middle – much like Figgy’s time spent with the Mets.
Also depends on how they use him – SP or reliever.
I’m thinking he’s going to give them some quality innings/starts/relief, and other times he’s going to get lit up like a XMas tree.
In the end, I don’t think it will matter because I’m still betting on their pitching as a whole – Halladay aside – is going to be a bigger problem then they realize.

Well, if the question is simply related to figgy joining the Phils, thenit does nothing to change my perspective on the Mets.
quite possible that he will end up on waivers again in the near future when Blanton, Lidge or Romaro comes back.

There really is none. The only reason it is being discussed is that many were for and many against the idea of Figueroa making the team. So to see him make the team somewhere else begs the question is that a good thing or a bad thing?
Now how significant it may be remains to be seen. Odds are Figueroa will only be on team as long as it takes for their injured to return or until he falls on his face. In any event the Mets didn’t envision him in their future so we still have to go out and win with whom we have.
