So how does this work? Do we get anything back? Do the Mets have to approve this? Do they have to keep Figgy on their 25 man roster?

MFers, first Pedro and now Figgy.

  2. njstuckintx

Wish him good health, but really bad luck. Glad Figgy was claimed over Misch, not that either are anyone to write home to Momma about.

Says something that our 6th/7th type starters are better than what the Phillies have.

      1. oleosmirf

just b/c Omar decided that someone is a 6th/7th SP doesnt mean they actually belong there…

I mean if money wasnt a factor, id have Figueroa starting over Ollie in a second…

        1. Kingman 26

          I disagree with you there.

If money wasn’t a factor, Figgy would still suck.

Cannot wait to see him get shelled by the Mets.

    2. metsfan4decades

I think that’s because Blanton didn’t go on the DL until after Misch cleared waivers.

  3. Mr North Jersey

Maybe Figueroa will help us win after all. Just not in the way many of us thought to begin with.

    1. Kingman 26

      + Infinity!!

      :-)

  4. prismo

Hmm…my Mets cap has his autograph on it. Uhh…time to buy a new cap I guess.

    1. tkfj

      When did he?

      1. Kingman 26

Well, certainly NOT when he signed Beltran, Wagner, Bay or KRod….certainly not when he signed Wright and Reyes to early and inexpensive extensions….certainly not when he traded for Delgado and Johan and Francoeur and gave up NOTHING in all three deals combined…and most of all CERTAINLY NOT while presiding over a system about to produce Ike Davis, Fernando Martinez, Jennry Mejia, Jon Niese, Josh Thole, Ruben Tejada, Kirk Nieuwenhuis, etc etc etc.

        1. mrose

yay there is the kingman I missed :)

          1. Kingman 26

            Hey, I never left!

            :-)

The last week of spring training pitching shook me up a bit…I hope it was meaningless….cannot wait for Johnny M to take the mound in 3 hours.

          2. mrose

I’m happy to have my MLB Extra innings even though I live in teh sunshine state now… I can’t wait to watch as well :)

    2. metsfan4decades

I read that post the other day. It’s certainly not news to me.

    3. ceetar

I think most of that’s unfair, and it lends more creedence to Omar not having full autonomy, not him being an idiot.

Figueroa was replaceable. Even advanced metric-junkies would tell you that. Misch, Nieve, etc do what he does. So who cares?

Mejia is a conundrum. It’s obvious that Omar started the spring wanting him in AA. So why did he not make it? Jerry begged, but does Jerry ahve that much power, or is something else going on behind the scenes? The article on Mejia in the OpeningDay program suggests that the organization wanted him on the team.

I don’t get Green. Maybe they saw something we didn’t, etc.

Omar struggles with English as a second language, trying to navigate the NY media and not say too much, and the handcuffs on certain topics and decisions made by others that bear his name. It’s a tricky thing, but it doesn’t mean he’s not capable.

      1. metsfan4decades

I don’t agree at all with the sentiment that Omar is an idiot. What I do agree with is he’s not always the most well spoken public figure out there, and he does seem to put his foot in his mouth too much. Has nothing to do with his nationality, more so he doesn’t always seem to think before he talks…..

    4. Kingman 26

      More inane nonsense.

Omar said we needed power, so he signed a power hitting outfielder.

There was only one good starting pitcher available, and he clearly wanted the AL and Boston.

Omar cut Figgy because Figgy STINKS.

Carter never had a shot because he is a career minor leaguer.

Omar sent Parnell down because he has been a disappointing underachiever for years.

As much as we all agree on Mejia belonging in the minors, every single bullpen guy other than KRod and Feliciano was awful this spring; they want to try to win-that is why Mejia is on the team.

And it didn’t take an Einstein to put Cameron in CF.

And mocking how Omar talks–how clever, original, and very relevant.

      Blah blah blah.

I am glad THIS is the blog I write for. Almost every other one is populated by drivel.

      1. ceetar

I disgaree a little on some, but the point is Omar had a legitimate reason for what he did. for the most part.

        1. Kingman 26

I agree…not sure if you are agreeing with me or not, but I agree with you!

          1. ceetar

            Lots of agreement all around.

          2. DNDJohan aka kistics

            agreed.

  5. metsfan4decades

    You know……

Knew this was going to happen. The minute Blanton went on the DL, coupled with the state of their BP, they said they were looking for cheap pitching. Right after that, Omar designates Figgy. Looking around the league a few days ago, you either have to go with a pitcher with better stats coming back from an injury or this type of journeyman with a rubber arm. Probably a no brainer for the Phillies.

    I don’t like it.

  6. dirtysanchez

    Good luck figs

  7. metsfan4decades

    So let’s see…
The Phills have the Mets castaways in the form of Schneider, Valdez, now Figgy. Anyone else I forgot?

I know many Philly fans wanted Valdez to get the 25th roster spot – which he did not. I just scratched my head over that one. If they think he would be an upgrade to their bench, just how bad IS their bench?

They believe Schneider is a superb defensive catcher as well.

Figgy – well, I just think they’re desperate right now, looking for a short term solution until they reevaluate.

    1. metsfan4decades

      Oh, and Fogg, right?

  8. Mr North Jersey

I wonder if this is a good thing for TRS now?

I mean he can now openly root against Figueroa so he can say when he bombs that he was right about Figueroa being just another AAAA Pitcher.

    1. Kingman 26

I have to say that I was really on the I Hate Figgy wagon first….over the winter I helped convince TRS that Figgy was awful when he was trying to sell me on the idea that his bullpen stats weren’t that bad, when they really were.

Yet somehow he gets all the credit for being anti-Figgy.

I want some props here too.

      :-)

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

LOL.. you get all the props for Original Optimistic Opinions….

        1. Kingman 26

          Ha! Thank you!

And remember, my pessimism for this year is basically limited just to starters 2-3-4, and a few bullpen guys.

I pray that I am wrong, and that a wave of Partial Positiviality washes over these guys too.

  9. DNDJohan aka kistics

Can’t the Mets pull him back? I’m assuming that the Mets would need to put Figgy on the 25-man roster though.

    1. Mr North Jersey

I don’t think so. We discussed this when Misch was put through waivers and I believe we found a link that explained the Mets could not pull him back.

      1. ceetar

Unless it’s different now that the season has actually started. Either way, if he wasn’t good enough for the 25 man roster (he probably wasn’t) two days ago, he’s not now.

        1. darknova306

But he’s a Philly now. Think of all the heart and grit he’ll pick up over there! :)

          1. ceetar

Well, the whining will fit right in, I can tell you that much. Him and Victorino will be best buds.

          2. Kingman 26

            + 50.

          3. metsfan4decades

            Ditto – hahahaha.

    2. Kingman 26

      Let’s hope not.

  10. darknova306

Figgy in Philly… yawn. So long, scrub.

    1. Kingman 26

      PERFECTLY said!

      :-)

  11. GravediggerHebner

It makes sense. He was about pitcher # 15 in the Mets depth chart, and with Philly having 3 guys on the DL he’s about pitcher # 15 for them.

  12. GravediggerHebner

There’s a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hall
And the bells in the steeple too.
And up in the nursery an absurd little bird
Is popping out to say cook-coo cook-coo, cook-coo
    Regretfully they tell us cook-coo
But firmly they compel us cook-coo
    To say goodbye cook-coo…
    To you…

So long farewell, auf weidersehen good-bye
I hate to go and leave this pretty sight

So long farewell, auf weidersehen adieu
Adieu, adieu, to you and you and you

So long farewell, au revoir auf weidersehen
I’d like to stay and taste my first champagne
    Yes?
    No

So long farewell, auf weidersehen goodnight
I leave and heave a sigh and say good bye – goodbyyyyyyeeeee!

    I’m glad… to go…. I cannot tell a lie
    I fleet, I float, I fleetly flee I fly…

The sun… has gone… to bed and so must I…

    So long…farewell…auf weidersehen goodbye…
    Goodbye…
    Goodbye….
    Goodbye….

    Goodbye!

    1. ceetar

      above my head.

      1. GravediggerHebner

It’s from The Sound of Music. I’m a little sketchy on the details but I believe there’s a party and the adults are sending the kids off to bed, so as they reluctantly go the kids sing this song.

YouTube video of the song being performed

If John Sterling can use a song from a 20th century musical dammit so can I!

        1. DNDJohan aka kistics

          You are just too funny

          1. Kingman 26

            Grave’s a poet and a guru.

    2. metsgirl31

      Funny!

    3. metsfan4decades

Yet another long ago musical that’s etched in my brain being part of a chorus back in the day.

Here’s hoping Figgy, as a Philly, fades away much like the cast did singing that song….

  13. DNDJohan aka kistics

I’m working on a trade to get Reyes for one of my fantasy team. Would you do this trade?

Yunel Escobar & McCutchen for Reyes. I thought this was more than fair trade.

I have abundance on OFs now that Heyward is looking like a stud, and I have Sizemore, Damon, Hunter as my other OFs. So McCutchen is expandable for me.

    1. GravediggerHebner

If you truly feel that McCutchen’s expendable, then the way I look at it is you’re exchanging Yunel for Jose. Depending on what your team needs that seems like a good deal. The only categories I think Yunel is likely to be better than Jose in are BA and OBP. Every other cat is equal or favorable for Jose IMO.

    2. ceetar

Definitely. Depends on your stats since I don’t know that Damon gives you that much or Heyward is quite that awesome yet, but still would do that trade. Reyes puts up monster stats and he’s healthy.

    3. njstuckintx

I hope this isn’t in the yahoo league. I almost ruined my computer spitting out my coffee.

      1. GravediggerHebner

My “all Astros all the time” strategy is working out great!

        Oswalt 0-1

Bourn, Pence & Lee combined 3 for 33

        1. njstuckintx

He did have a quality start.

If they don’t get Berkman back, their lineup is going to be hurting something fierce.

But then again, it’s never pretty facing Lincecum, Zito and now Cain. Not that Zito is wonderful, but he’s decent.

    4. DNDJohan aka kistics

BTW, I’m proposing this deal to someone who has Reyes. So if you were the owner of Reyes team, would you do the trade?

      1. ceetar

        nope.

      2. njstuckintx

        nope. :)

      3. GravediggerHebner

I third the nopes. You might try making it an initial offer, but when/if it’s rebuffed up the ante with a better OF from your “stable.”

      4. DNDJohan aka kistics

Damn… how about Heyward, Yunel for Reyes?

        1. GravediggerHebner

Well, Reyes is such a unique player that I would probably hold onto him under most any circumstances, unless I “just knew/felt” that he was hurt and not going to play.

Heyward you never know. Surely some “can’t miss” players have missed before. Others hit eventually but not right away. Some hit right away. His value may never be higher than it is right now, you might be well served to try and get as much as you possibly can for him. You’ll get nothing IF he is hitting .190 and sent down by the end of the month. IF he wins ROY and has a Ryan Braun type season, well at least you got Reyes for him. :-)
