Stoner’s line is of special interest because if we think John Maine might be skipped in his next turn, it’s worth noting that Stoner is already on the Mets 40-man roster AND pitched on the same day as Maine, so Sunday would be on normal rest for Stoner.
stickguy
4/14/2010-3:12pm at 3:12 pm (UTC -4)
More likely, they just skip maine and let everyone else pitch on 4 days rest. No need to blow a move for that start.
GravediggerHebner
4/14/2010-3:17pm at 3:17 pm (UTC -4)
With no off days on the schedule, wouldn’t this put everyone but Johan on 3 days rest?
If it were up to me, I would option Mejia to the minors to become a starter, use that spot to call up Stoner, and insert Maine into Mejia’s vacated mop-up role to work out his kinks. Maine and Stoner can flip roles if/when Maine figures it out.

Grave I am with you but I hate Stoner can we call up Misch or Gee instead? plz
GravediggerHebner
4/14/2010-3:23pm at 3:23 pm (UTC -4)
Yes, but the key difference is that Stoner is on the 40 man, those guys aren’t. To me it just makes too much sense that Stoner is both on the 40 man AND on schedule to pitch Sunday on normal rest.
I’m not sure what days Misch or Gee pitched on and therefore whether they’d be ready for Sunday. Also, who gets bumped off the 40 man to make room for them? So yeah it can be done, but it’s more problematic.
Mr North Jersey
4/14/2010-3:27pm at 3:27 pm (UTC -4)
Thats what TRS said also.
I can’t support the idea of Stoner I get he is on the roster but all things being equal I’d rather see the pitcher that gives us the best chance at winning and Stoner doesn’t fit that role in my eyes only.
Would Much much much rather see Gee or Misch.
Mr North Jersey

Why is it so hard?
GravediggerHebner
4/14/2010-3:32pm at 3:32 pm (UTC -4)
Well the day they pitched on is pretty self explanatory, because depending on when that is Gee or Misch will not be rested enough, or will be too rested (which I guess is not a real problem).
But the 40 man thing means you have to cut someone. Who do you want the Mets to cut just so Misch or Gee can pitch instead of Stoner? As long as you have someone you don’t mind cutting then it’s not really a problem.
Mr North Jersey
4/14/2010-3:43pm at 3:43 pm (UTC -4)
Scanning the 40 man roster sadly there is no one Iam willing to cut at this time to allow Misch or Gee to be put on.
So, gulp… it looks like it will have to be Stoner.
Dammit!

Until I read an official report otherwise I’m going to assume it will just be Maine in his regular slot, and that they’ll just have an “intensive bullpen session” on his throw day between starts to try and figure something out.
I was just trying to guess what the Mets could/would do if they felt Maine just couldn’t pitch that day, and Stoner makes sense in that instance.

I am still pissed they might lose everts for no reason. At least stoner is on the 40 man already.
UNless they are just waiting to stick beltran or excobar on the 60 day. I assume that retros to ST also?

I thought they were going therough the rotation with an extra days rest 1 more time? But I won’t swear to that.
NM. I just pulled out th schedule, and you are right. If they pull him, he needs to be replaced.
don’t think they call anyone up unless they decide right now that he is getting sent down. I bet he gets a couple more starts at least.
But IMO he needs to get some serious tune up work done on his mechanics.

I finally checked this for myself.
COntract signed 1/11/2005, so it goes thru 2011 season.
And since he turns 33 next week, that means he will play the bulk of next year at 34. and obviously, turn 35 early in his next deal.
No way you resign a 35 YO with cranky knees. Let him go.
And just pencil in Kirk right now FT in 2012 if Fernando isn’t the LT answer in CF.

If he hits q grand slam, then they need to just say screw it and get him up here.
I know that all the options weren’t great, but it still frustrates me that the Met FO continues to make the move that makes the least sense (and not just to me, but to many nominally intelligent people that follow BB closely). And they always seem to make the move that foulds up the 40 man roster prematurely (and of course, end up losing decent depth parts because of it).
jacobs over carter was just a dumb idea (no roster implications, although theoretically it did keep depth, if you count jacobs as depth).
But Mejia and tejada on the roster, and the 40 man before they needed to be? Dopus Omarus.
I know NJ will blow an anyurism, but right now, just start Mejia on Sunday. Or Neive. whichever, with the other slated to pitch too.
say, neive for innings 1-3 (4 if pitch count manageable) and Mejia for 4-6 (or 5-7). Then the rest of the pen, since they are all required, per jerry, to pitch every day.
keep maine in the pen just in case it goes to extras.
Honestly, 3 apiece from Neive and Mejia (or taka ans mejia) isn’t going to hurt anyone, and it is more than you are likely to get out of maine anyway.
get them (especially mejia) stretching out for a starting gig.
replace jacobs with carter. Or more likely, they wait for Murphy, so replace cat too.
Murphy, carter replacing Cat, Jacobs. Has to be an improvement.

speaking of the yankees (why not!), I saw an interesting piece (I think it wa a comment on some obscure paper or blog, can’t keep up at this piont) that was funny, and I meant to post hear.
paraphrasing, basically said “why all this insistance about the yankees winning big again, when the team is older than the E street band”?
I just found it funny. So shoot me.
But he did list how many key old guys they have. Simply amazing (or is it PEDs?) that they don’t break down.
SOmething like 5 key guys 37+. Jeter 35, A Roid 34. Pretty much geezer central.
But, they just go chugging along.
Damn Phillies are older too, but at least they are starting to break down.
I know it reallmy makes no difference, but I think the Mets are younger at 5 of 8 positions, with 2B being pretty close to a tie. THe Mets are really only “old” at CF and C (and CF not until Beltran comes back).
