The Wilpons need to FIRE EVERYONE in the front office and the manager. They have no clue…I said it all winter, Tell the Jays you will take Vernon Wells, and they would have given you Halladay. Idiots. This is as correctly stated a continuation of the last two seasons…it is joke.

    1. Kingman 26

Vernon Wells? This IS a joke.

Have you looked at his contract?

Wow. You would have traded 2 or 3 of our best prospects AND taken on Wells’ outrageous contract?

Might be the most ridiculous thing I have heard in ages.

I wanted Halladay, but looking at this team now, no one pitcher or player would make it a winner.

Saving the money and the prospects was clearly the right way to go if it included taking Wells.

I am guessing here, but I think the point was to take Wells instead of giving up top prospects.

Although I still think in the end, the phils didn’t give up any more for Halladay than the Mets did for Santana.

        1. GravediggerHebner

That’s the way I took it too, that the cost in prospects would’ve been minimal due to the outrageous contract.

A contract which, while we are judging the Mets on a 7 game sample, applying the same small sample to Wells he is more than living up to.

.345 5 hr, 10 rbi in 8 games would make him the best hitter in the Mets lineup.

Phills gave up Lee though, that has to count a lot. Toronto had no desire to package those guys because they wanted top return for Halladay. They were not in desperate need of cash. Besides they would have then been sitting there with lots of money and no prospects. Not exactly better.

          1. stickguy

lee had nothing to do with halladay. Well, the trades had nothing to do with each other (it was not, as commonly supposed, a 3 way deal).

They could have easily kept lee and had a dominant pitching staff for this year, but they decided to recoup some prospects (or more likely, save some money!)

The overall mood in philly land (press and fans) was that they should have kept lee.

          2. trs86

Yeah but I don’t think one gets done without the other because of prospects lost.

    2. DNDJohan aka kistics

I don’t think Halladay would’ve waived his NTC for the Mets.

      1. trs86

Correct. He basically Johaned his way to Philly.

Fans to justify their teams reluctance to trade for or sign a free agent will point to the players statements after he is traded to or signs with a given club. The player usually says something to the effect that the team he signed with or was traded to is where he wanted to be all time. The fan of the team not obtaining the player will say something to the effect that the player did not want to play for us so there was no way we could have obtained him. Now let me ask you what was the player to say at the press conference of his new team? “ I really didn’t want to sign here. I really wanted to sign with the Mets. The Mets were the team I wanted to be with and I would have gladly signed there or given my approval for a trade to them. I really didn’t want to sign or get traded to the Phillies. They suck, but what the hell could I do?” :)

      2. CaseStreet

IOW, Halladay fell into their lap.

        1. DNDJohan aka kistics

          What’s IOW?

          1. GravediggerHebner

            In Other Words.

I also use FWIW, and IMO a lot which are For What It’s Worth and In My Opinion.

At least I think that’s what those things mean, to be fair I used to think LOL meant Lots Of Love and I was a bit curious as to why people were saying it to me.

          2. Mr North Jersey

Don’t forget FWICG which is Cerrone’s trademark “from what I can gather”.

          3. CaseStreet

actually, I meant Idiots On Wheels

          4. trs86

Guess I am a loving person then.

    3. saltygary

I’m glad mr. Wells is hitting well for the first time in a couple years but bringing on that contract and then paying for doc h would be a joke.

      1. trs86

Yeah unless they were taking ALL of our dead weight and eating some contract, again that would have defeated the purpose for the Jays.

Had to go out earlier – just got back.
On the way out in the car I heard the beginning of the Ed Coleman report with Joe and Evan. Did anyone else catch that? I didn’t hear it all (reached my destination) but what I did hear was not good. Ed said that listening to Maine last night he said something that really struck him so he had to go back and ask him about it.
Apparently, in the past Maine’s good and/or strike pitch was his sinking fastball (can’t remember if it was a 2 or 4 seamer they were talking about). Besides sounding totally frustrated and lost, Ed said Maine commented that he has to get that ‘rising fastball’ down. When Ed asked him about it later, it was evident to Ed that he’s lost that, doesn’t think he’ll ever get it back and he’s trying to make the adjustments.

Really, really discouraging to hear. I don’t know how you lose your best pitch that young but apparently Maine has admitted to this.
