Man Up Awards

PITCHER

Mike Pelfrey

Mike Pelfrey

Go Big Pelf! Mike threw his second game much like his first…terrific. Mike went 7 innings for his second win of the season(Mets team lead). Mike had all of his pitches going, especially his split which he is throwing with more confidence. Pelf threw 109 pitches today, 70 for strikes and had 6 punch out. Going into the 2010 season, the challenge made to Pelfrey was for him to assume the #2 role in the rotation. Naturally, this kind of challenge was meet with criticism…it appears Mike is more than ready to take it on. Congrats Pelf, well done!

HITTER

Jeff Francoeur

Jeff Francoeur

No surprise here. Easily the Mets MVP so far this year, Jeff went 2-4 and accounted for a run. Jeff also made some great plays in the outfield. Jeff is pretty much a one man wrecking crew to start off the season, he is hitting .438 with a .514 OBP and slugging .929. Jeff was  reported basically as the teams “comedic relief”, I guess this clown is laughing the hardest. Great job Jeff, keep it up…seriously

HONORABLE MENTION

Luis Castillo

Luis Castillo

Luis Castillo had a good day at the plate. Luis went 2-5, accounting for 2 runs. Luie is hitting .250 on the year and can only get better. Luie did have a tough day on the bases, getting ran down on a botched double steal. Lets hope Castillo can continue getting it done at the plate and improve on the bases.

You know it’s been a good day in Met land when we see a Man Up Awards post go up here.

I know it’s only two starts for Mike but boy, I like what I’m seeing. He had an awful year last year, not just the stats but emotionally/mentally, he was lost. Nice to see him take the lessons learned from last year, put it behind him and come out with a new and improved game plan for 2010. So far, it’s paying off. He had it all going on today.

    You go, Big Pelf!

Franceour…..anyone else get the impression this young man means business? He’s tired of losing, he’s tired of hearing the negative and he’s almost single handedly trying to reverse the mind set. Here’s hoping this fast start translates to a good, steady season for Frenchy. I don’t recall the term ‘streaky’ ever being applied to him. He’s either been very good or really awful. So hopefully very good continues….

FMart with the game winning walk off hit today. The ‘baby’ Mets continue to get it done.

Comparisons. Don’t tell me it’s early because that’s the same thing that I try and use when someone mentions our record.

    Pelfrey: 2 games, 13 innings, 9 hits, 4 BB, 10 ks, 2 runs, 1.38 ERA
    Jar Jar: 2 games, 8.1 innings, 11 hits, 4 BB, 3 ks, 8 runs, 8.64 ERA
    Hamels: 2 games, 10.2 innings, 11 hits, 5 BB, 11 ks, 7 runs, 5.06 ERA

Can I ask a stupid question? What is the point?

      Philly: 7-2
      Atlanta:5-4
      Mets: 3-6

      Enough said.

With Philly, that’s b/c their ace has had 2 good games in a row and despite the mediocre pitching of the rest of that staff so far, their offense is getting the big hits. Ours is not.

I think Jerry mentioned this but if you look at the first 9 games there really is only maybe 2 we were out of. The rest we could have won, despite mediocre pitching. We’re leaving far too may runners stranded, not getting that big hit.

and wow – didn’t realize the 1.38 ERA. Nice.

you forget the other despite: Despite poor managing.

See here is the problem with both sides (i.e. those who are optimistic about the Mets and those who are pessimistic). After each game, each side seems to think that their point has been proven. Lets wait until we get a bigger sample size. We can’t jump to conclusions after each and every game.

Isn’t that the whole point of sports blogs?

j/k. Kinda. But I know what you mean.

sometimes a bad start or a slump is really just that, and not indicative of the actual talent level and potential of the team.

        1. udontmesswthejohan

And sometimes it is. Just saying we, or at least I, can’t go on this roller coaster ride each and everyday depending on whether they won or lost.

some “Phillies fans suck” fodder involving a fan vomiting on a cop.

    1. metsfan4decades

      Unbelievable.
Reminds me of the story and pic last year of a Philly fan at CBP – grown man no less, throwing a full bottle of water at a 10 year old boy holding up a ‘Pulols for President’ sign (Phils were playing the Cardinals).

There’s a reason the Philly fans have the reputation they do. Where else but in CBP do you see a jail right in the stadium to deal with these unruly fans?

Had to laugh at the pic with that story. ‘Click her to enlarge’. Uh…no thanks.

      1. stickguy

they don’t have the jail at CBP.. That was at the vet, and it was really for Easgles games.

Many corssover fans, but the Eagles ones overall are much worse.

      That’s really sick. To a 11-yr old girl… gees…

  6. CaseStreet

Like the honorable mention. Let’s hope Ollie can keep us in the game today.
    Does Reyes bat third?

    1. metsfan4decades

I’m thinking not until they’re back home, but what do I know?

    2. njstuckintx

I wish Reyes would just Bat in general! I couldn’t resist.

According to McBlog, Pelf credits Blanco on his success yesterday. I hope Jerry designate Blanco as Pelf’s personal catcher, but I can see that coming a mile away…

    1. metsfan4decades

I thought it was pretty funny during that Pelf interview post game yesterday, while giving Blanco credit for calling a good game, he couldn’t remember his name when he brought it up to give him credit.

    2. stickguy

      I saw that.

my favorite comment was the guy that said, knowing Jerry, he would probably start Jacobs for Pelfs next start so that “all his catchers could get work in”.

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

        LOL That’s pretty funny.
