Post Game: Missed It By That Much

Jenrry Mejia (0-1) finally got to pitch in a close game and his appearance didn’t last long or end well.  In a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the 10th inning the first batter Mejia faced, Chris Iannetta, hit a solo home run, his 2nd of the season, to win the game for the Colorado Rockies 6-5 over the New York Mets.  Hopefully the Mets will Get Smart and send Mejia to the minor leagues to continue his progression toward becoming a major league starting pitcher.

Long before that Jeff Francoeur started the scoring with a solo homer, his 3rd, leading off the top of the 2nd inning off of Rockies starter Aaron Cook.  Colorado immediately got the run back in the bottom of the 2nd when Ian Stewart scored on a Clint Barmes double.  With 1 out in the top of the 3rd Luis Castillo singled and David Wright followed with his 3rd home run of the season for a 3-1 Mets lead which was short lived.

In the bottom of the 3rd Colorado took the lead on a 3-run homer by Ryan Spilborghs, his 1st of the season.  The Rockies tacked on another run in the bottom of the 4th on a somewhat bizarre play.  With 1 out the pitcher Cook doubled.  One out later Dexter Fowler singled and Cook advanced to 3rd base.  As the throw came in from the right fielder Francoeur, Fowler ran toward 2nd base.  Mets 1st baseman Mike Jacobs cut off the throw and threw the ball to 2nd base attempting to get Fowler, but Fowler narrowly slid in safely under Jose Reyes’ tag and while he did that Cook trotted home with a run.  After 4 it was 5-3 Colorado.

It stayed that way until the top of the 8th when Rod Barajas drove in Jason Bay with a single off reliever Rafael Betancourt to make it 5-4.  Then the Mets tied it in the 9th.  With Rockies temporary closer Franklin Morales on the mound Gary Matthews Jr. led off and hit a ground ball to shortstop Troy Tulowitzki who bobbled it and Matthews was on 1st base.  The official scorer ruled it a base hit.  Matthews stole 2nd base then went to third on the error when catcher Iannetta’s throw sailed into center field.  A Castillo sacrifice fly plated the tying run, but Iannetta’s agony didn’t last long.

I was working on my 2009 taxes as well as my 2010 estimated taxes so I missed the game. I turned on SNY just in time to see the Rockies prancing and dancing on home plate. You would have thought they defeated a top team the way they were celebrating.

From your game summary it sounded like there were some positive plays by the Mets. Although it seems like it will never be we will see some periods where the Mets play well and win some games. When the season is over I am sure they will be a .500 team which is all you can ask for from the present squad.

Look the Phillies surge started when they brought Pat Gillick in to take over the team. The Mets have to make a similar move. They need an experienced and successful executive to oversee the entire operation and make whatever changes are necessary. I don’t know who that person is and I can’t make any suggestions but it is up to the Wilpons to find that person. Like with any business that has to be the starting point.

Barbara Feldon (agent 99) was hot, hot, hot. After seeing her in the Top Brass Cologne commercial every man I knew, including me, would have traded his soul for one night with her. :)

Don’t know how you can be so creative and clever that late and after watching defeat after defeat, Grave. But great as always.

I’m not even sure what to say anymore. This team, as currently constructed, will struggle just to be a .500 club. Seems like no matter what they do, they’re always JUST falling short. Whether it’s a great catch by the opposition, not getting the big hit, a pitcher making one mistake. When it happens game after game, especially against unknown pitchers or scrub pitchers, it’s a sure sign this ball club has some problems.

Agree – Mejia doesn’t belong up here now. It’s a waste of what appears to be future talent.
Enough with Jacobs/Tatis platoon at first. Get Ike up here already.

It’s tough to work through 1 experiment at a time. When you are working with experiments at SP, RP, 1B… uff da. not the best of situations for sure.

And we are working on a high school experiment in the manager’s office.

I thought it was more along the lines of baking soda combining with vinegar in a small model volcano. Add food coloring or ketchup for effect!

    RELEASE THE HOUNDS!!!

    1. Kingman 26

Before releasing them, starve them for a few days, and then spread lots of raw meat all around Jerry’s and the coaches’ offices, so the hounds have no trouble deciding where to go.

How there is not an uproar in the press over Jacobs STILL hitting ahead of Francoeur is becoming a great mystery to me.

Who the hell hits a guy who cannot hit OR get on base ahead of a guy who has now, for 8 full games, been one of the very hottest hitters in the game?

It is beyond infuriating at this point.

Wasting Pagan’s hitting ability, speed, and extra base hit potential in the 8 hole is almost as bad.

This team is not worth our time and effort with Manuel at the helm dragging it below the already crappy level it is at.
