Lennon tells Heyman: It has to be Davis.

SI’s Jon Heyman tweeted that Mets beat writer David Lennon asserts that while Tobi Stoner has been called up as a corresponding move to the Designation For Assignment of 1B Mike Jacobs to help a gassed bullpen following yesterday’s 20 inning game, ultimately the move will lead to the recall of Mets uber-prospect 1B/RF Ike Davis.  Woo to the hoo!

Heyman’s tweet goes on to say that “the Mets need lefthanded power” and that a club official said “we’ve got to win now.”

So far this season in AAA Buffalo, Davis in 10 games is hitting .364 with 3 doubles, 2 homers and 4 RBI in 33 at bats.

Damn, I think it’s too early. Let’s hope Davis will stay

Well, we all get our wish. Rather see the kids grow up here than 35 year old retreads.

Then why not bring up Eddie Kunz and Nick Evans too while we’re at it? Their promotions sure demolished their top prospect status rather quickly and I know of no Mets fan that was happy with the way those early promotions turned out in retrospect.

Or it could be that they’re hype was bigger than their ability. Same with Blastings Thrillage.

Exactly, neither Kunz nor Evans posses the talent that Davis does.

This is starting to feel a little too much like Nick Evans Part 2.

The only thing that allows me to think this might be different than the others is that Davis was essentially born and raised in major league clubhouses. I totally understand your trepidation and I share it somewhat, but I’m hoping the fact that Davis is “a legacy” will help it to work out better this time.

Also Davis comes out of the college baseball factory of Arizona State University which is like playing some level of MiLB, not AAA but certainly enough to cut down on the amount of time he needs in the minors. Evans went to the minors straight out of High School. Big difference on the rush scale IMO.

And he knows multiple facets of the game, having played 1B, RF and pitched. I think the pedigree with him has to count for some kind of advantage over Evans or Kunz.

And like Mr. NJ gets at, while we can discuss our feelings about it all we want it’s still not an official transaction yet and it’s entirely possible we see someone else called up.

I think we may be jumping the gun a bit here.

A few questions need to be answered 1st and they are as follows.

      1. Who really is coming up Davis or someone else?

      2. If it is Davis is he coming up to stay or until Murphy gets back?

      3. If Davis is coming up to stay is he going to play everyday or platoon at 1st?

      4. If Davis is coming up to stay is it on the condition that he has to produce or else be sent down or is he here to stay regardless?

I think this needs to be known before we start comparing him to a Evans or a Kunz.

I think it will b Carter

I REALLY hope Jerry actually lets him play though. I can see Jerry platooning Davis and Tatis, and that’s absolutely the WORST way to go about it. Let the kid play (almost) every day while he’s in the bigs.

    1. GravediggerHebner

Completely agree with what you say here. A number of the beat writers in conveying this information used variations on the phrase “Murphy is nowhere near ready” so yeah just let the kid play for a few weeks. If he falls on his face, he goes down when Murph is ready. If he takes off, Murphy who?

Will mets fans be more forgiving to Davis than to fmart last year?

    1. Hazmet

If he runs out a pop up that falls in fair territory then yes.

      1. GravediggerHebner

you beat me this time Hazmet! :-)

        1. Hazmet

I’m pretty sure this will be the last time. :)

    2. GravediggerHebner

If he runs out any and all fair ball pop ups that he hits, probably. But there will always be that fanatical minority that boos Johan Santana that will boo Davis everytime he doesn’t get a hit.

    3. Mr North Jersey

I would hope as with Mejia fans are intelligent enough to know to be forgiving.

    4. CaseStreet

I’m shocked. I thought it was F-Mart’s batting average that bothered everyone and that not running out the pop up was accepted as a fluke rookie mistake.

I wish that Jacobs couldve been the back up firstbaseman he was supposed to be but viva Davis if he is promoted
