lol jerz is on top of things lol. Its pretty much official, just no word if he is going to be in tonights lineup

  2. metsfan4decades

wow – I’m surprised. Really thought it would be later this week.

I am totally befuddled. I am pretty sure that Toby at the minor’s blog confirmed that the 19th was the cut off day for super 2, menaing that if they waited until Tuesday, they likely avoid losing that 1 year of control (at a cheaper rate). ALthough not sure if they can send him down and have it not matter?

it wold make no sense not to wait 1 more day if that is the case.

Or of course, they could bring him in but not activate him I guess? Not like 1 more AAA will make much difference!

Hopefully when he is activated someone does a post with the “real” story!

    1. njstuckintx

i was wondering the same thing.

While I’m confident that Toby Hyde knows the rules better than I do, I will nonetheless share that when I looked up the Super 2 rules a couple days ago they were vague but the parameters they laid out were essentially “the service time in question is usually avoided 20 days into the season but in the past has been as many as 40 days.” Since the season starter April 4th (at least for 2 teams) that would suggest that 20 days later would be April 24th.

Bottom line is I don’t know, but if the Mets really did just shoot themselves financially in the foot by 1 day, just add it to the long list of questionable moves by the organization since say trading Nolan Ryan.

      1. stickguy

well, Omar probably doesn’t care, since he knows if they don’t start playing better, and soon, he won’t be around to deal with it!

      2. metsfan4decades

If we fans can figure this out, I cannot believe Mets management are not aware. And if no one is even thinking about the ‘clock’ issue, that’s just beyond comprehension.

Maybe they should assign someone in the organization to start reading blogs…..

        1. GravediggerHebner

To be fair to them I can’t figure it out I’m just guessing based on lots of reading from various sources. Try googling “mlb arbitration rules” or “mlb service time rules” sometime when you have lots of free time, because you’ll wind up reading a lot much of which is contradictory.

The worst part is that mlb.com itself has very little specific information available to the public. They do have information on these topics, but not in depth.

I’m ultimately not terribly worried about Ike Davis’ service time because the trend in MLB recently is to sign young players to long term contracts buying out arbitration and in some cases some free agency years too, so if Ike merits that sort of thing by his performance I think even this motley crew of ownership and management will be able to work out a contract, especially considering how they’ve done so with Wright and (very successfully for ownership) with Reyes.

        2. stickguy

well, the clock issue is a little bit theoretical. There are also a couple of different issues. 1 is super 2, meaning they hit arbitration 1 year early. There is also some condition where they reach FA a year early, but I don’t think there is any chance that happens with Davis.

So maybe they are more concerned with righting the ship on the season, then they are about maybe having to pay Davis more in 2013 or 2014?

Quite likely, if he is the real deal, they lock him up anyway right through Arb and into FA.

Oh, and I also recall reading that the next labor deal (due before Davis can cash in) quite possiblly eliminates the whole super 2 deal anyway.

And somewhere Murphy is thinking ‘Of all the bad luck’….

  5. GravediggerHebner

Mike F tooting his own horn. I do recall him saying last week that “if the Mets do poorly on this road trip they will be forced to call up Davis for the next homestand” so kudos to him for calling it.

    1. Mr North Jersey

He is loving it. At least he will be merciful with the kid as he gets acclimated to NY.

      1. GravediggerHebner

No doubt. He won’t get the “Murphy” treatment. It pays to be the son of a former Yankee!

        1. Mr North Jersey

Hit the nail on the head with that one. :-)

  6. stickguy

Look at the potential higher salary a year early for Ike this way.

If he is for real, and he is going to get a big payday, that means he was worth it. And they are saving a ton of money the next cuople of years paying him minimum wage, instead of someone like Carlos Pena 10mill+. So, it all evens out in the end.

And if F Mart takes over fro Frenchy next year, lots more money to spend on pitching!

  7. Mr North Jersey

If Ike is hitting the way Mets hope the Mets simply will pay him or better yet sign him to a contract like they did Wright and Reyes to avoid arbitration.

  8. gipperpdx

    All is saved!

  9. saltygary

If he hits a HR tonight I will buy his Jersey. Been holding out till Valentine comes back and just don’t want a Bay or Wright.

    1. GravediggerHebner

      You’re a Wright hater! ;-)

(just kidding I understand from that discussion your reasons for not purchasing his jersey, but way to put pressure on the new kid “hit a homer and I’ll buy your jersey punk!”)

      1. saltygary

CMON this is the first time I’ve been excited with this team in like 2 years… No pressure on him to save the season :)

  10. GravediggerHebner

The reason that Jose Reyes is not in that lineup posted in the UPDATE above is that he is tired and asked for a game off. Just to avoid any speculation. Per Adam Rubin twitter.

    1. ceetar

should’ve gotten the game off yesterday probably.

  11. trs86

Crap, Reyes is out and Manuel decided to double up at 2B.

    1. metsfan4decades

LOL. I just caught that too. I’m assuming Cora at SS.

  12. Mr North Jersey

Dare we dream (the M is silent)???

    Sometimes I dream
    That he is me
You’ve got to see that’s how I dream to be
    I dream I move, I dream I groove
    Like Ike
If I could Be Like Ike
    Like Ike
Oh, if I could Be Like Ike
Be Like Ike, Be Like Ike
    Again I try
    Just need to fly
For just one day if I could
    Be that way
    I dream I move
    I dream I groove
    Like Ike
If I could Be Like Ike
I wanna be, I wanna be
    Like Ike
Oh, if I could Be Like Ike

  13. stickguy

Saw that TIm over at MLBTR clarified the call up date issue.

Today was the first day that he could be called up and remain for the enitre year and not accrue a year of service time. So, it gives him the full years of control before FA>

If he came up yesterday and stayed up, would have been free a year earlier.

So, a good idea to wait on this move.

The other issue (being a super 2) depends largely on how he performs, but that is only money, nt years of control.

And IIRC, the CBA expries before he will reach any kind of arbitration, and quite likely super 2 goes away in the next deal.

    1. GravediggerHebner

I had not seen that, thank you.

    2. CaseStreet

thanks, I was just about to ask that considering the Justin Smoak and Calling Up Top Prospects posts.

    3. metsfan4decades

      Thanks for the clarification.

  14. CaseStreet

lol. I think Burkhardt has been hanging with MC too much.

  15. GravediggerHebner

Just in case anyone was wondering Adam Rubin says that Cora is indeed playing SS as many of you have suggested in this thread.

Given that it’s no secret that Ike Davis was called up at least in part due to a lack of extra base hits coming from the Mets hitters I find this quote somewhat cautionary (Davis speaking):

“I’ve gotten a lot of hits and I’ve worked some counts and drawn a lot of walks and haven’t struck out that much,” he said. “But I haven’t been driving the ball in the last five games and that’s something that I’m looking forward to doing more often. I was hitting doubles and home runs the first four games. I haven’t really hit one since. I’m making hard contact but I’d like to drive the ball more.”

  16. CaseStreet

Per KBurkhardtSNY: At least until Murphy is healthy, Omar said Davis will play everyday. No platoon.

    1. metsfan4decades

Good. We should have a very good idea then of his defensive skills by then. Coming into ST, and from all the scouting reports I had read, they indicated he was above average defensively. Then in ST I think he had like 4 errors in 4 consecutive games, which I thought odd.

  17. CaseStreet

My John Sterling impression after Ike hits his first homer:

    Ike Carramba!
    General Ike hits a bomb!

    1. gipperpdx

      Operation Overlord!

    2. CaseStreet

Of course have to throw in some D-Day references!
