Man Up Awards For Tuesday Night

PITCHER

Cubs Mets Baseball

GO BIG PELF! Pelfrey notched his 3rd win of the season tonight, going 7 innings with 6k’s and 0 earned runs. The wonders of what a good secondary pitch can do. Ever since pelf has employed that split finger into his arsenal he had been nearly untouchable. Pelf is 5th IN THE MAJORS with his 0.86 ERA so far this season, has half of the whole teams wins and has the teams only save. Its a small sample size so far but what a start to the year from Pelf. Also, Pelf has already notched 4 MUA’s, the closest to him in MUA’s is Johan Santana with 2.

HITTER

Cubs Mets Baseball

JOSE, JOSE, JOSE, JOSE! Reyes is on his way back to being the guy we all know and love. Reyes went 4-5 today with 2 RBI’s, including a triple and a stolen base…have not said a line like that in quite some time. Reyes seemed to have some spring rust still on him until tonight. He raised his batting average to .222 tonight but im sure if this is a sign of things to come, it will be way north of that before long.

HONORABLE MENTION

Fernando Tatis 2 run pinch hit home run…Manny style

Fernando Nieve whos arm does not appear to be falling off even after appearing in 10 of the Mets 14 games

Left off Blanco. Blanco’s pick off when it looked like Pelfrey was starting to rattle was a turning point in the game. So impressed by our two catchers.

      Very good point, TRS!

Pelf definite gets Man Up Award especially after Santana did the rite of passage hug that now makes him a man also.

I wish Thole was impressing too.

Here is the question, if Beltran is gone for a while and Mets have to bring a kid up to help in CF who do you call FMart, Pridie or Nieuwenhuis?

        1. stickguy

          Pridie.

assuming that you are starting pagan and just want a bench bat to replace GM jr..

F Mart needs to play everyday if he comes up IMO. And Kirk (I love him, see below) should have some more time, plus he isn’t on the 40 man yet.

If you look at Pridie’s minor league career it is incredibly unassuming. As much as I dislike GMJr I see no reason to replace him with someone that’s been less than mediocre at the minor league level. Just because someone is younger doesn’t mean he’s automatically better and Pridie has not been used off the bench in his minor league career so what makes you think he can adjust to that role. Oh, yes he’s younger so he must be better. :)

Based on scouting reports he is a better defender. When looking for a guy who is in GMJR slot are you looking for an average hitter with below average defense or a below average hitter with above average defense. For that slot, considering the guy should not really be first on the PH list anyway, I am looking for defense. He’s got decent pop and a very good base stealer, proving he should also be a good pinch runner.

Besides what makes you think that GMJR can adjust to a bench player?

Thole actually is showing signs of life the last three games. Believe he went 1-for-3 with a walk today, following a two-hit performance (including a double) the day before. Hopefully, he’s about ready to turn his season around.

screw F mart. I am carrying over last years man crush on Captain Kirk to this year.

another hot month, and put him on the Wright track with a month in AAA, and get him ready to come up if pagan goes down.

since I have now officially put beltran in the recycle bucket, and do not expect to see him back this year, and I think Kirk is the heir apparent for 2012 anyway when Beltran has moved on to wherever 35 YO CFs with no knees go.

    1. Mr North Jersey

wow u beat me to the punch. read above. lol

I love Niewenheis as well, and he seems to be the better fit in center (F-Mart isn’t even playing center at AAA). This is a big year for F-Mart and the organization. They’ll have to decide who is the future in RF, F-Mart or F-Core. I love the energy and the cannon arm F-Core brings, and despite his recent slump (we all knew he wasn’t going to hit .400) his approach at the plate is light years ahead of his days with the Braves. If F-Mart has a big year in AAA, it could be a tough call, but a nice problem to have, since the Mets were calling on the likes of Jeremy Reed and Cory Sullivan last year….

      1. stickguy

well, if it is close, go with the tie breaker.

F Mrt will be about $7,000,000 cheaper next year. I am sure there is another position they can apply that toward!

Heck, it is more than enough to pay Castillo to go away too!

  5. stickguy

oh, and don’t even diddle around with Iggy. Just DL him (I don’t even care if it is over reacting) and call up Kiko or Acosta. basically whoever they would have called up to replace mejia, if they would just wise upand replace mejia!

    1. asod75

I’d bring up Acosta. Seems to be throwing the ball better than Kiko right now.

I don’t think any of us should be surprised at Pelfrey’s performance. We all knew that a number of Mets pitchers were working on adding another pitch to their repertoire and that Pelfrey and Niese were the two most successful. All Pelfrey needed was another pitch to ascend to the next level. Niese now had another pitch to rely on when in a given game the curveball wasn’t effective. There have been a couple of others that have been working on adding another pitch but the progress has been slow. Now if they had just signed Joel Pineiro the rotation would be extremely solid but what’s done is done so let’s root for the good Ollie to once again show up.
