IGARASHI ON DL

According to Metsblog, Royota Igarashi has been put on the DL with a “moderate injury to his left hamstring”. Manny Acosta has been called up.

The curse of the designated 8th inning guy continues…didnt take a taxi cab this time…

If your wondering why not Calero?
Acosta is already on the 40 man roster and Calero is not.

    Also here is Acosta’s stats

It’s nice that the guy on the 40 man roster also happens to be the guy who’s doing well so far this season.

I recall Toby Hyde mentioning that the Bisons kept pitching Acosta specifically late in games and he guessed that the Mets were “grooming him for a late inning role.” Good job Mets if so.

    2. trs86

40 man is not a huge issue but I am not sure the Mets feel Calero is ready yet. He is struggling a little in AAA. Acosta to me is especially the right move.

      1. GravediggerHebner

“Huge” or not it is an issue. I applaud them for having it set up in this instance with usable depth.

        1. trs86

Question, with Jacobs clearing do they have a spot on the 40 man?

          1. trs86

Answering myself. Does not appear so.

          2. Mr North Jersey

Didn’t they add Davis to Stoner’s spot?

          3. Mr North Jersey

Or should I say Jacob’s spot?

          4. trs86

I guess so. Stoner was already on it I thought so I guess Davis took Jacobs 40 man spot.

          5. GravediggerHebner

I may not have the “order of operation” correct but I believe they DFA’d Jacobs to open a spot on the 40 man which was then taken by Davis (Stoner was already on it so his part in the scenario isn’t a 40 man roster problem, just a 25 man issue).

Had they simply optioned Jacobs then he would still be on the 40 man necessitating a different removal to accommodate Davis.

          6. trs86

            You are very correct Grave.

          7. Mr North Jersey

So we agree that Davis was added in place of Jacobs spot. Good to see.

          8. GravediggerHebner

I think this calls for festive dessert foods!

          9. Mr North Jersey

Speaking of which today my oldest daughter turns 19.

I am awed at how fast time has gone by and she has gone from this little rugrat that was so shy to this grown woman right before my eyes.

Lemme start stop before I start tearing up.

          10. GravediggerHebner

I know what you mean Mr. NJ.

I remember watching the countdown waiting for the Olsen twins to turn 18.

Wait that’s not the same at all.

            ;-)

            Happy birthday to your daughter.

          11. stickguy

Gee NJ, you either started young or are older than I thought.

My oldest turns 19 in June. And I did not start young!

          12. Mr North Jersey

            I’m 41 Stick

          13. GravediggerHebner

Sabermetrics tells me that you had your daughter when you were negative 12, and that you’re a poor 1st baseman but an average left fielder :-)

          14. Mr North Jersey

LoL, my wife would agree on the negative 12 of that I have no doubt. :-)

          15. metsfan4decades

Happy birthday to your oldest, Jerz.

I won’t age myself here but suffice it to say my one and only hasn’t seen either teenage years or her 20s for that matter, in some time.

          16. Mr North Jersey

            Thanks 4D and Grave.

          17. DNDJohan aka kistics

Congrats NJ! My oldest turns 2 in 2 weeks (and my youngest turns 10 months in 3 weeks :D ). So, I still have long ways to go for 19th birthday.

I still have some time to develop my sabermatrics stats into a AAAA journeyman SP that cannot get a job even after a solid ST and will end up being picked up with the dark side.

        2. trs86

Very true. They could just cut Cat and promote Carter. Thus freeing up a 40 man spot if needed.

          1. GravediggerHebner

Yes. But then that brings up the whole unfortunate defensive capabilities conversation. I think Kistics is logged in currently so lets just avoid that conversation. :-)

So avoiding that conversation I’ll just say I would classify it as a depth issue. Cutting Cat then promoting Carter cuts into the organizational depth, unnecessarily my opinion.

          2. Mr North Jersey

Correct me if I am wrong but I also recall there was some debate as to if Carter can hit coming off the bench also. Which I believe remains to be seen since it seems he has been playing on a pretty regular basis with the DH Rule.

          3. trs86

How do you find out if he can hit coming off the bench?

          4. Mr North Jersey

I would think by hitting off the bench.

The point being is I believe it was discussed toward the end of ST that Carter historically has been a starter for most of his minor league career and if he was brought up to NY to be a 5th outfielder and pinch hit off the bench is that the best choice in using him?

Now if he was brought up to play 1st base rather than who they decided to go with Mike Jacobs that would of been a different situation entirely as he would have got ample playing time.

So the question still remains is Carter better served maybe I should of said are the Mets better served with Carter being the 5th outfielder coming off the bench?

          5. trs86

But isn’t depth only an advantage if that depth has ability? I can’t see how Cat is helping us at all.

          6. GravediggerHebner

I think if we’re giving other members of the roster more than 14 games to determine their worth we can extend that courtesy to Cat too.

You say you can’t see how Cat is helping us at all. I guess that’s a fair statement. But if so then how is Carter going to help us at all? We have a body of work to see Cat as a MLB pinch-hitter/occasional starter at various positions. And I would say there isn’t any evidence to suggest Cat is hurting the club.

We have no such thing for Carter. You ask how do we find out if he can do such a thing? During the debate Mr. NJ refers to I suggested a potential solution – use Carter in that role at AAA.

Right now Carter is basically playing full time. I say make him a AAA pinch-hitter/occasional starter and see how he performs. People claim that “Carter has shown what he can do at AAA it’s time he got a shot in MLB” and to that I respond “he hasn’t shown he can be a pinch-hitter.” So lets have him demonstrate it.

Then we can apply the same “he’s shown us” logic and call him up to replace Cat with something other than hopes and personal preferences to go on.

          7. trs86

I just can’t see placing a guy like Carter as a bench guy in AAA. Even if you do that it still does not show that he can do it in the majors. I think a hitter is a hitter.

          8. stickguy

jus ttrade him since there does not seem to be any way Omar will ever call him up to the Mets.

          9. Mr North Jersey

The question is do you want to bury your prospect Chris Carter on the bench as a 5th outfielder with an occasional pinch hit here and there?

How many AB’s has Cat actually had this season 13?

          10. Mr North Jersey

Stick if the Mets did decide to trade him then wouldn’t having him play everyday down in AAA be the right way to go?

          11. GravediggerHebner

This may be harsh but being that Carter is 27 and has been traded 3 times in the last 3 years I’d call him a journeyman before I called him a prospect.

          12. Mr North Jersey

            You sure about that Grave?

Not his age but being traded?

OK I see it now Grave. I thought he spent his entire minor league career with Boston but he was actually in Arizona originally.

            http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=carter003wil

          13. GravediggerHebner

Well he was traded twice on the same day. The DBacks traded him to the Nationals then the Nationals immediately sent him to the Red Sox. I suppose you could call that one trade.

The 2nd (or 3rd) trade is the one to the Mets.

          14. DNDJohan aka kistics

Damn. Missed a good conversation. :)

      2. Mr North Jersey

Like Grave said, “It’s nice that the guy on the 40 man roster also happens to be the guy who’s doing well so far this season.”

  2. metsfan4decades

No surprises today. Jacobs cleared waivers, Iggy on the DL….

Tough break but maybe this won’t be the season ending hammy problems that have seemed to plague all other NY Mets in the past year that had hammy problems.

Here’s hoping Acosta continues his good pitching when he gets up here. Wonder how long it will take Jerry to warm up to trying him?

    1. stickguy

He will get a low leverage inning tonight.

If he looks good, he will then be annointed the 8th inning guy, and pitch every day until Memorial day.

Hi he gives up a run, he will be banished to Jerry’s cornfield, and we won’t see his name again until Green is ready to come off the DL and Acosta gets sent down.

See, I am figuring out how the Jidiot works!

      1. metsfan4decades

        LOL – Jerry’s cornfield….

I prefer to not see Green up here at all. We had a ‘nice little rhythm’ going in that BP. Green will just muck up the works.

      2. darknova306

        As long as Jerry’s cornhole isn’t involved…

        1. Mr North Jersey

Congrats on posting the most tasteless comment of the Month.

          1. darknova306

            Hurray! What do I win?!?

          2. Mr North Jersey

            :-) ,wus

        2. GravediggerHebner

I am the Great Cornholio I need T.P. for my bunghole!

          1. trs86

I would hate for my bungholio to get polio.

          2. GravediggerHebner

Would you like a spatula for your bunghole?

  3. johan4cy

Well… I can’t see him coming back any time before September, you all know how it goes…

    1. darknova306

At least they did the right thing and just put him on the DL now so we’re not stuck for a couple weeks with a wasted roster spot and a depleted pen for Jerry to destroy even more.

  4. CaseStreet

Just when the pen was looking awesome, especially Igarashi. Love his demeanor. Didn’t even last as long as Putz, though he performed much better.

    1. GravediggerHebner

      That’s what she said?

      1. CaseStreet

I’m in class. Can I have a warning next time?

  5. trs86

Well Mets send Zamby to the pen.

    1. prismo

      Cubs*

    2. metsfan4decades

Huh….I haven’t looked at stats but was last night the last straw? I actually didn’t think he pitched all that bad – he was just out pitched by Pelf and Cubs offense was non existent.

  6. CaseStreet

Can someone explain this comment from Jerry:
“The Mets’ Manuel had an interesting take on the increased reliance on scouting reports for defensive positioning. He said the use of such information, while valuable, is robbing players of their instincts.”
How exactly does it rob a players instincts?

    1. Mr North Jersey

      Ask Jerry to expand.

    2. ceetar

I think he’s saying “fire me, fire me now. I’m useless and don’t believe in anything learned after 1960″

      wait, maybe not.

I think he’s implying that fielders are relying too much in trying to guess where a ball is going to be hit than actually fielding it? Like saying oh, they should be able to get to everything anyway, and if they’re always leaning left maybe that’s why they miss it right? I really have no idea. He’s just an idiot. really.

      1. Mr North Jersey

Can we at least give the man the chance to explain his reasoning b4 we bury him on said quote?

        1. GravediggerHebner

We can but Ceetar can’t. With him it’s just instinctual. :-)

    3. trs86

Hmmm… maybe the players are becoming too attached to where the ball should go instead of just reacting off the bat?

    4. GravediggerHebner

There are some, I think Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez among them, who believe that defenders should move for every pitch, not just every batter. So in that case you can’t really position each defender using a scouting report for every pitch. They need to have their heads in the game, those who can actually see the pitch type and location being called by the catcher have to position themselves related to that, and those that can’t see it have to have some sort of system/communication with those who can to respond accordingly.

For example, all defenders would be in their “general area” for a particular batter. But when the first pitch called is an outside breaking ball they should all be moving to accommodate that on the pitch. Next pitch inside fastball then move again. And so on.

So they need to use the scouting report initially to get to a general area, then move from that based on pitch type & location as the at bat progresses. They can’t all just kill the grass in the same spot all game like Alfonso Soriano.

      1. CaseStreet

hmm, other than the 2B and SS, I didn’t think the rest of the fielders knew what pitch was coming next.

        1. GravediggerHebner

To the best of my knowledge they don’t, per se. But what Keith has talked about is having a word signal from the 2B, such as if it was a fastball Wally would shout “Keith” as the pitcher wound up and Keith would move accordingly. I don’t see why the 3B can’t have same with the SS. Then the OF who as MF4D points out likely can’t see the catcher’s signs can however see the infielders moving, know what that movement means, and move accordingly. Everything is happening in front of them so they should be able to observe and respond. It’s all subtle but can be the difference between just getting to a ball and just missing it.

      2. metsfan4decades

        And I guess that’s why it’s a young man’s game….
I can’t imagine trying to pick up a pitch from the outfield.

Then again, wasn’t it Victorino who was ejected from a game last year in center field b/c he was heckling the umpire on a call? (and that’s ’cause he was mad on some called strike in the bottom half of the inning on Howard or someone…..)

        1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Well… you are talking about Vicky… he complains and moans about everything and anything.

  7. metsfan4decades

Looking at pre game show. The tarp is is on and although nothing official from Kevin B., he said it looks like this game isn’t starting on time.

    1. prismo

Sorry, I’ve been posting about the weather on twitter and neglecting you all. :)

The rain in NYC is finally leaving the area, but there still might be a delay…just to give the crew time to get the field ready. So probably one of those 30ish minute delays if there is one (just a guess).
