Post Game: First series win, champaigne already tastes sweeter

First win of the season

First series win of the season

Mets won their first series of the year with their 5-2 win over the Cubs. For the Mets, it all started with Johan who held the Cubs scoreless through 6. Tom Gorzelanny of the Cubs matched zeros with Johan until the 6th inning, when David Wright hit a double to score Jose Reyes(felt like old times).

Flood Gates Opened

The trouble didnt end there for Tom as Jeff Francoeur also got a hit to score Wright from 2nd. After another Ike Davis hit, Pinella went to the pen and brought in Russell. Russell walked Rod Barajas and then the baseball gods finally made a weird play go the Mets way. Angel Pagan  hit a grounder toward Fontenot whose vision was partially blocked by Barajas running toward second. Fontenot boots the grounder and Francoeur goes home to score but Fontenot lazily goes to pick up the ball which on a head up play by Ike Davis, turns out to be another run for the Mets as Ike rounds 3rd and also scored.

Chess match in the 7th

Santana opened the next frame giving up a single to Soto, who reached 2nd on a throwing error by Francoeur. Fontenot grounds out to move Soto to third and Fukudome hit a pinch hit single to put the Cubs on the board. The chess match started here as Jerry Manuel took Santana out for Nieve who surrenders a hit to Ryan Theriot. Pinella announces Chad Tracey to pinch hit for Jeff Baker which prompted Jerry to go to his bullpen for Pedro Feliciano, only for Pinella to use Amaris Ramirez to pinch hit for Chad Tracy. Feliciano manages to get Ramirez to ground out into a fielders choice and then get Dereck Lee to fly out to end the inning.

Pelf and Krod tied for saves

Pelf and Krod tied for saves

Feliciano got into trouble in the 8th as he surrendered a base knock to Marlon Byrd to start off. Feliciano got Nady to fly out but walked Soriano. Jerry went to the pen for Mejia who walked Soto for the bases loaded. Jerry went again to the pen(seeing a theme here) for Krod to get a 5 pitch save, something he had not done since 2005. Krod gets Fontenot to hit a sac fly but struck out Colver to end the inning. Krod got a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th for his first save of the year.

Nice job – got a chuckle out of the graphics – very clever.

I especially thought the kitty cat playing Jerry looked appropriate. Not sure if it’s fitting for Lou even though he does look neutered.

    nice to get a win.

but man, the cubs look like crap. ANd with some nasty bad contracts hanging over them too.

    bummer for them!

still mad at Jerry for almost fouling it up. Just fire this sorry arse excuse of a manager already.
