This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty The ” Ike Ices One ” Edition 04-24-10

So as the march to .500 continues, rookie sensation, Ike Davis continues to show why calling him up was the right decision. Davis was 1-3 last night , hitting a bomb that would make Dave Kingman envious. Ike has looked very comfortable at the plate, batting .389 since his call up. His pitch recognition has been great, he has rarely looked overmatched. And his defense has been superb, case in point that amazing catch while flipping into the Mets dugout on Wednesday night. All in all last night was a much needed win. David Wright knocked in 2 runs with a double while Jose Reyes and Jason Bay adapted quite nicely to their slots in the newly constructed batting order, hitting back to back triples. The only black spot on last nights game was the elbow injury that John Maine sustained. This guy can’t catch a break. Last night when it seemed like he finally got his mechanics straightened out ( although his velocity was still down). Maine lasted 3 1/3 inning only giving up one earned run. But the Mets dominant bullpen helped keep the game out of the Braves reach, with contributions by Hisanori Takahashi , Raul Valdez, Pedro Feliciano, capped by Frankie Rodriguez’s second save of the year.

In my opinion, this team looks as if they have finally gotten their legs under them, and I expect a winning season at the very least. Oh and by the way , this Justin Heyward kid didn’t impress me one bit last night !

” Who’s the better rookie  Ike or Heyward? You Decide !”

And with that said ….. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!

Happy Birthday wishes go out to possibly the best pitcher the Mets had from ’78-’82, Pat Zachry (1952) .

Current star outfielder ,Carlos Beltran is 33. (1977) Come back soon Carlos we need you !

Sadly on this date in 1992, original Mets infielder, Elio Chacon, passed away.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays claimed reliever, Brian Rose of the New York Mets on waivers on April 24, 2001.

And Mo Vaughn was sighted at rum stand by the World’s Fare market last night. He was passed out drunk wearing nothing but a golden sombrero !

Carlos to me seems like he’s 38. When I read he was only 33, my jaw dropped.

“Oh and by the way , this Justin Heyward kid didn’t impress me one bit last night !”

First of all Justin Heyward is not a kid and why do you hate the Moody Blues?

Now if you mean Jason Heyward then I’m glad you’re not a scout. He is all of 20 years old and one day could be the best player in baseball.

My bad I was in days of futures past lol

BTW Rusty the sound on that recording was excellent. They produced some quality recordings in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s using tube electronics.

Mmmmm, yummm. Nothing like nice round warmy tubes for the best sound IMO. Cue the standby switch and keep’m warm. Showing my age.

Feel bad for Maine but provided he’s OK I think it’s time the Met’s have the discussion:

John meet the bullpen, bullpen meet John, welcome to long relief.
Dillon Gee meet the 5th spot in the rotation, rotation meet Dillon, be kind to the youngster.

And if I had my druthers: Mejia, have fun stretching out in Buffalo and get ready for the next opening.

I’m with you. If the Mets start rolling and are several games above .500 down the road, they have to start sniffing around for SP help. Not saying you are going to snag a healthy Webb or anything like that. I’d have my eyes on Cincy, KC and that’s about it at this point. I can’t see who else is going to be sellers at this point that have anything to trade. I’d say Houston should sell, but won’t and the only thing worth buying from them is Oswalt, and that ain’t happening. I don’t see much on Arizona, the Cubs… ick., and after that, maybe Baltimore? Guthrie wouldn’t be bad, but he only makes 3 mil., is decent and not overly old at 31. Probably nothing happens for 2 more months, but I put this out there due to the amount of kids the Mets will be running out there. I love the Youth Movement, but if they are still in position to win, they have to start checking. Slotting Arroyo in Maine’s spot would be sweet, but that’s just me. Plus he rocks a mean acoustic!

Happy Birthday to Carlos. Really like to see him back soon.

Bobby O said last night, despite Heyward’s 0 for at the plate, this kid is going to be something special for years to come. Can’t help wondering if the reason he’s struggling and Ike is not so far, is the same reason FMart struggled last year. 20, for the most part, is probably a bit too young to get the call up. I believe Heyward had a great spring and the Braves are in desperate need for offense, so I’m assuming that’s why he’s up already.

Gotta feel for Maine. Never heard anyone sound as frustrated as he did on the post game show. He just can’t catch a break. Listening to him and Jerry, I got the impression he wasn’t going to readily tell them he suddenly had a problem in the 4th with that elbow. Jerry said he wanted to ‘tough through it’ but Jerry so no reason to take a chance on him altering his mechanics and possibly risking more of a problem.

Well, as critical as I’ve been about Jerry over the last couple of months, I have to give him credit for the Reyes move to third, even if it was done more out of desperation than anything. Though, to his credit, he has been talking about moving jose to 3rd for two years now. Anyway, I like the look of the 3-4-5 right now, so lets hope it keeps going.

With regard to Maine, well, what can you really say at this point. Kind of like a combination of supreme frustration and feeling bad for the guy, but if i’m being totally honest, it’s more frustration. It’s not exactly a news flash here, but his issues clearly seem to be more mental rather than physical (the injury last night notwithstanding). I see some people suggesting a move to the BP, but at this point I think I might go one step further and send him down to the minors at this point. Get him out of the spotlight, let him go down and clear his head, and let him speak to a shrink.

I agree. I did not like the idea at first with Reyes hitting in the 3 hole. It looked good last night. It makes our lineup deeper. I like it.

    2. Hazmet

Funny thing I heard on WFAN from Eddie C was that he handed Jerry a folded up piece of paper with a line up on it after the game Thursday night and that was the line up he rolled out last night. I kid you not. Probably just coincidence since if you slide Reyes to the 3 hole last nights line up is pretty much automatic to fill out with Ike up.

On Maine, I like your idea even better but I don’t know if he has the right to refuse assignment based on service time, etc..

      1. udontmesswthejohan

Yeah, once you make the decision to put Reyes in the third hole, then the rest of the lineup just kind of fills itself out on its own, which I think is a good thing. The only real question IMO becomes whether Wright or Bay hits clean up. I also like what Pagan has been giving them thus far. think he might be able to grow into the leadoff spot.

With reagard to Maine, you may be right, but if they sit down with him and explain the thought process, maybe he decides that it is in his best long term interest to accept an assignment. Steve Trachshel comes to mind. Never really loved the guy, but when he accepted the assignment he came back much stronger.

A special item for TRS (from another site). Especially like the comment.

Daniel Murphy is closer to returning Carlos Beltran.

Man, I am just glad Daniel Murphy is closer to listening to reason and returning Carlos Beltran to us. Dan – you can’t blackmail your way back into the starting 1B job. Let him go.

    1. metsfan4decades

      What? Doesn’t even make sense….

      1. stickguy

the intended meaning was murphy is closer to returning THAN beltran is.

As written, is implys he is about to return beltran. Hence the witty comment about how Murphy should not have kidnapped beltran.

    2. Mr North Jersey

      LoL I saw that also.

Murphy must really be desperate that he would kidnap Beltran.
