Well the Mets have done something that they haven’t done since the first week of this season. No it’s not driving runs in scoring position – that still is an enigma onto itself. No what I am referring to is the Mets scratching and clawing themselves to the .500 mark , coming withing two games of the first place Philadelphia Phillies. I believe since the the demotion of Mike Jacobs, and the call-up of Ike Davis this team has transformed itself from I team that looked listless in the field and at the plate to a team that has been showing signs of fight. Even on this recent home stand against the Cubs and Braves, the Mets have battled and triumphed against some fine pitching, even coming from behind to win a few games. Take Yesterday for instance, Jonathan Neise gutted his way through 5 1/3 innings against the Braves, giving up one run on six hits , while the Mets offense was shut down by fireballer Jair Jurrgens. This is a game that a few weeks ago would be chalked up as a loss,but the Mets would breakthrough in the sixth on a double by Jeff Francouer and later on with insurance runs by Jason Bay. The question is can the Mets sustain this level of play, making this pennant chase a tight one? Well it is too early to tell, but if you adhere to this years slogan, Then YA GOTTA BELIEVE !

I think the return of Jose, along with the promotion of Ike, were two things that will go a long way towards solidifying this lineup. As we witnessed yesterday, Jose’s defense alone was sorely missed. That catch of the low line drive to end the 6th(?) inning may well have been the difference in the ball game.

Funny how better players makes a team better, isn’t it?
I would also like to see a better manager, but I think we are stuck with Jerry for the year as long as they stay at least around .500, and somewhere in the hunt for a run at the post season.
They better, hwoever, not extend his contract. That I don’t think I could take. Even if they go to the WS he needs to be replaced.
