Man Up Award for Sunday Night

Rain is Mets best friend

Rain is Mets best friend

PITCHER

Braves Mets Baseball

Im running out of words to describe Pelf’s major start to begin the season. Today however, he did struggle a bit with his command against the cold and rain yet held the Braves scoreless for 5 innings. If you have not been paying attention, Pelf extended his scorless inning streak to 24 innings and is now the MAJOR LEAGUE LEADER in ERA at 0.69. Pelfrey also notched his 4th win tonight, which is a 4 way tie for the major league lead(check out this company…Tim Lincecum, Ubaldo Jimenez and Roy Halladay also have 4 wins). Needless to say this is his best start in his career, lets just hope this is a foreshadowing of other positive career firsts…GO BIG PELF

HITTER

CORRECTION Braves Mets Baseball

Ah, its good to see Jose be Jose again. Jose Reyes singled in the first which for anybody who knows the old Reyes means only one word….trouble. Jose proceeded to steal 2nd base. In what seemed to have helped get someone else going, Bay hit a hard shot toward third which Chipper Jones backhanded on the hop. Jose advanced on his own to third base but Chipper botched the throw to first to get Bay and Jose took advantage to score the only run of the game. Im sure Reyes started the rain dance after Pelf finished the 5th inning…more hips…more hips. Welcome back Jose!

HONORABLE MENTION

Jason Bay for his shot down third and hustle toward 1st that may have caused the poor throw

Raul Valdez(dishonorable mention) for costing Pelf a complete game shutout because of his one pitch to Heyward. Im sure he knows he owes Pelf a steak dinner

David Wright for not slumping when it comes to defense, made a bare handed pick up and throw for an out.

anyone else find it weird that his ERA went from .86 to .69? Pretty good numbers for the Mets if you ask me….or am i the only one completely reaching for that link there?

      It’s a sign !

Big Pelf commented: ‘Life is good when you’ve got nothin’, but you’ve got something to show for it’.
Blanco commented he didn’t really have it during the game. Pelfrey gave all the credit in the world to Blanco for getting him through it. Said if it was last year, he would have thrown all fastballs and been knocked out in the 3rd.

I know we do a lot of Omar bashing but credit him for realizing the catcher situation. I thought his comments odd at that time last year, when he said he wanted veteran catchers because of the mostly young pitching staff. I believed he was making excuses for most of the pitchers.
Saw comments from the Phils fans the other night on Hamels awful start. There were many bashing Schneider for calling that game.

Hmmmm……….Could it be Omar was on to something there?

‘So goes Reyes, so goes the team’. The way it worked out last night, we won that game because of that Reyes run. So glad he’s back….

Yup, it appears (although early) that the Mets have in deed improved their defense and pitching with 2 small signings. Another thing that I have noticed is just how solid Jason Bay is in LF. He is not flashy and does not cover as much ground as a speedster but he knows so much about positioning it is very impressive.

      1. metsfan4decades

Keith has commented on more than one occasion since the start of the season his surprise on Bay’s speed, both in the OF and on the base paths. Don’t know if he’s turned it up a notch since coming here but he’s not as bad as some were reporting.

It could be my untrained eye but watching both Bay and Franceour run the base paths it looks to me like Bay is faster.

Jason Bay hasn’t made an error in 203 games either.

A sweep, striking distance of the Phillies (or better) when we face them, Yankees drop a series, Pelfrey doesn’t ever give up runs, and the rain kept Manuel from burning the bullpen, so it’s nice and rested for the Dodgers, then an off day.

Completely agree. Like I said in the dugout last night, Bay’s defensive suckness was completely over blown.

      4. trs86

Yeah as Kingman has commented many times, a guy who has not made an error in that many chances is solid.

Btw is the mets mojo float out of mothballs kong ( if u r around )?

    Hansen’s curve is pretty nasty.

Not the most pretty of games, but a win is a win is a win. I’ll take it!

Dishonorable mention to Raul Valdes for “costing” Pelfrey a complete game? If anything Pelfrey should buy Valdes a steak for wasting Valdes’ time and energy. Pelfrey cost himself a complete game by walking 50 and throwing 1,060 pitches in 5 innings. Pelf’s having a great season but IMO he wins last night’s MUA by default, and since Valdes threw 1 pitch which was a strike I feel the contest for the award was pretty damn close.

      LOL, true, but he battled.

Honestly going into last night, this will seem strange, I wanted Pelfrey to struggle a little. I wanted to see if yips Pelfrey came back and self-imploded. I actually liked what I saw. He’s not going to have his best stuff every night but he battled through it in a Johan type way. Kudos to Pelfrey.
