$125Million+Howard=Gonzalez/Fielder To Mets?

I am a fan of the ABC TV Show FlashForward whose premise is basically about what would happen if everyone got a glimpse into their future. Apparently JD from section518 believes he has had a FlashForward that the Mets should thank Philly because by giving Ryan Howard that 125M extension it triggered a ripple effect that will lead to Gonzalez or Fielder coming to New York when they become free agents.

Personally I can’t ever fathom a scenario that I would thank the Phillies unless it went something like “Thank you Phillies for allowing the Mets to beat you soundly on the field.”

I think that this signing actually compounds the fact that the Mets will NOT get Fielder or Gonzi. Ike is cheap and looking good.

Agreed. If Ike plays out the way I hope he does, it won’t make much sense to pay20mill+ for another 1B. Unless of course, Omar and Jerry decide to make Ike a middle reliever instead!

Well, he does have OF experience… :)

Interesting what the Phils are doing. Basically, they are going all in on the current team, and betting that they will continue to be stars up into their mid-30′s. This is getting to be quite the old bunch, and they will still be paying these guys when they are practically geriatric.

Right now, they are already committed to $130mill for 17 guys in 2011. And I don’t know what the hell their payroll can be, but i doubt they are going up with the yankees!

they also have 85mill in 2012 and almost 60 for 2013 locked up already.

And even in 2013, they will be paying a ton for a bunch of 34+ YO guys. Over 30mill to Blanton, Vicky and Lidge in 2012.

Guess they really are following the yankee model. Pay huge $$ to old guys and hope it works out!

      the yankee model works though

Yeah, but likely HGH testing in the next couple of years so..

To really make it work, you need an effectively unlimited budget to buy your way out of th emistakes. I don’t think the Phils have that.

And, a lot of luck, to still get good production out of a bunch of 35+YO guys. Even with HGH!

yeah, well, we’ll see how Pettitte and Posada and A-Rod and Rivera do once the season wears on. They feel good now, but that doesn’t usually last.

I think all it helped the mets in was in regard to any FA out there that we may need. No doubt with this move, werth is the odd man out and the yanks/sox will bid and bid high for werth which means the mets can go out and get something they need…i dont see feilder or gonzo here anymore with a much cheaper option and productive already in house

If the Mets are going to invest 20M lets make it for a pitcher(s). Not only that but the Mets also have Reyes and Wright coming due (assuming that a prospect takes Beltran’s slot).

In fact with Agonz, I would not mind them pulling a Philly and trading him after using him instead of re-signing him.

LOL. This basically screwed the Yankees cause you know A-Gonz will end up in Boston. I was forced to be with a bunch of Yanks fans on Sunday, and they were certainly hoping the Mets traded for A-Gonz to keep him away from Boston.

    No Thanks! I like Ike!

I’d rather spend that money on resigning the Core and extending the Junior Core and bringing in Cliff Lee.

Flip Perez for Gee or Mejia and we are talking!

        1. trs86

Hard to believe that either will be better than Perez potentially will be.

Good luck trying to get rid of the $12M man. I don’t he’ll be too bad, especially not for the 5th spot.

I just don’t see how AGonz or Prince fit on this team, unless multiple younger cheaper on-hand options fail miserably.

The Mets finances are such that young cheap talent fits much better in the grand scheme the next couple of years than top dollar free agents do.

Agreed. If somehow Captain Kirk or Fmart can take Beltran and or Frenchy’s spot you have a lot of money freed up for other needs like uh…. SP?

    2. CaseStreet

It’ll be very interesting to see what happens in the OF.
Next year we’ll still have Bay and Beltran. Pagan and Frenchy will still be Arb eligible. Then you have F-Mart ready to bust on the scene.

I still think having Beltran on the field and in the lineup is best for this team. Pagan’s been doing a good job, but he’s no Beltran.
