Will the Mets sweep the Phils?

    1. darknova306

No. With all the runners our pitching staff allows on, facing that lineup in that ballpark, I could see us getting swept fairly easily.

hmm, so you’re saying the Mets fantastic homestand was due to Citi Field’s expansive dimensions? Interesting take.

        1. darknova306

No, actually I think the homestand success was more the rotation pitching well and the other teams being sloppy. It helped that the offense started heating up, too. My concern is still pitching, going forward. If Niese keeps allowing all those runners, he’s gonna get lit up. Pelfrey isn’t going to keep up this amazing pace he’s on (not that he’ll regress to sucking, but it’ll be interesting to see exactly where he levels off). And we all know reservations about relying on Ollie/Maine. Our pitching staff as a whole still leads baseball in walks, and that’s really concerning as well.

I don’t expect the sweep for sure but I disagree with the thoughts on getting swept because of runners on.
Game 1 we have Niese with a not too good WHIP of 1.86 vs Kendrick who has a similar WHIP.
Games 2 and 3 we have 2 pitchers with WHIP of 1.121 and 1.192

        1. darknova306

          Good point.

Hitting in City vs. Philth’s place, There were quite a few gap shots that would have been out of the bandbox by the liberty bell. I could see this going either way, but I’m guessing a lot of 8-6 games. I’m going optomistic and saying 2-1 Mets advantage in the series.

You see Moyer outpitching Santana fairly easily?

        1. darknova306

Alright, maybe not easily. That’s the game I think we have the best shot of winning. Just hope the bats continue to heat up and Santana has his control locked in.

          1. metsfan4decades

            Agreed.

    2. CaseStreet

Niese v. Kendrick – Advantage Mets
Pelf v. Halladay – Advantage Phils
Santana v. Moyer – Advantage Mets

LHP Niese and Santana will have good outings against the LHB Phils.

The challenge will be whether the Mets can knock Halladay out early to get to the bullpen and whether Pelf can continue to pitch well against probably the toughest lineup he’s faced.

I’ll put my neck out and say we sweep in Philly!

      1. metsfan4decades

        Obviously, my favorite response!

This can go so many ways…

      2. darknova306

If we sweep in Philly, you can call me out on Monday for being overly Nabob-ish. I’d welcome that in exchange for continuing the winning streak.

I found this quote funny from MLB.com’s matchup

Moyer pitched well enough to win Tuesday in a loss to the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park. He allowed 10 hits and four runs in six innings,

Damn what low standards. Well enough to win is a 6 ERA with a WHIP of 2.00 is pitching “well enough to win”

I’ve basically given up on predictions this year….but I’ll give it a shot for this weekend:

Niese vs. Kendrick: Small advantage Mets. Kendrick is just not that good and wouldn’t even be in that rotation if not for injuries. If Niese is sharper than he’s been, and/or limits the damage even with walks, the Mets can take this one.

Pelfrey vs. Halladay: Advantage Phils. Past records, Halladay is obviously the better pitcher. This year so far, Pelf has him beat. Halladay coming off a loss but what are the odds he does that back to back?

Santana vs. Moyer: Advantage Mets. Reasons: obvious.

Say what you will about the Phillies offense.. right now it’s just not _that_ good, and the Mets are hot. The Mets have seen Kendrick, but I don’t think the Phillies have seen Niese. (which is an advantage in my mind)

Satuday’s a bit of a crap shoot, in that Pelfrey is due to give up a run or two, and it’s Halladay (who’s also due, technically). I think the idea here is to capitalize on the opportunites, steal bases, move runners over, etc. It’s nice to work a guy, but some guys fight that by being able to go long. So it might not work with Halladay. Either way, if Pelf pitches well, we’ve got a good shot.

Sunday is a mismatch in our favor. Play sound baseball so if Santana does let up a pop fly (home run) it’s only one run. Force Moyer early. I feel like the Mets are often aggressive against Moyer, but they should be more patient. But what do I really know? If they could chase him, this game is almost a gimmie against their bullpen with Santana pitching.

    1. stickguy

so what you are saying is that, based on the recent trends of the Mets, they will win big the 1st 2 games, then get blown out on SUnday.

I am with MF4D on this one. I have no idea what to expect.

I just hope the Phils pen continues it suckitude, even with Lidge back.

      1. metsfan4decades

Raise your hand if you’d like to see Halladay leave in the 8th with a couple run lead and Lidge come in to blow that lead.

        1. metsgirl31

          Consider my hand raised….

        2. Mr North Jersey

I love your scenario but I have to say the idea of watching Halladay not get out of the 1st inning I love even more.

          1. trs86

Or perhaps even better not get to the first inning. He could always go out late Friday for tacos.

          2. Mr North Jersey

Nah what’s the fun in that?

I want it to happen on the field for all to see.

        3. CaseStreet

I’d prefer to see Halladay leave in the 4th with a couple of runs behind and Figgy coming in to blow a close game:)

        4. metsfan4decades

O.K. – agreed Mr. North, TRS and Case’s scenarios area all better than mine.
Although I’m not caring if Figgy looks bad against us. Just assume he be a no factor in it all.

  5. Mr North Jersey

I have a hard time predicting what will happen in this series except to say the odds of any 1 team sweeping regardless of who it is is not good to begin with so I just hope we are on the winning end of this series.

Trying to figure who these guys are is anyone’s guess. I for one didn’t think they would be a team with a pitching staff that has produced the numbers they have so far or a offense that has done what it has so far also.

Looking forward to being happily surprised this weekend.
