Na...Shane never celebrates...thats Jose's thing
Needless to say, the one man wrecking crew this weekend against us was none other than Shane Victorino. Im sure in a general sense, Mets fans just dont like the Phillies much like the hatred toward the Braves during the 90′s and Cardinals during the 80′s. This rivalry has been raging on since 2007 and has been heating up every year(except last year when even philly players and fans did not enjoy). While all things considered, this weekend was a gauge to measure how we stack up against the “best” in the division, Shane’s performance made me think about those of Met killers past and I came to the realization that most of them are on their way out of MLB. Since Shane is only 29 years old and will be with the Phillies at least for 3 more years, I figured it would be interesting to see where he stacks up against notorious Met killers that I have grown up with.

Major League Baseball is entering a new generation of its long storied existence. Alot of these guys belonged to an era that is slowly ending and giving way to new stars. Shane Victorino seems poised to be included in a new generation of Met killers, who else would you nominate to be on that ship also?

Credit to Victorino. He displayed a lack of hustle recently, owned up to it, and re-focused. As a Met fan I would’ve preferred that this happened say a week later but it is what it is. He’s one of those classic “thorny” players and he fills the role well. Kudos to him. If only he weren’t such a hypocrite when it comes to celebratory actions I would respect him like I do the other 24 Phillies.

eh, I don’t respect most of them.
I’m hoping this bad pitching performances didn’t wake up victorino or ibanez and they can continue to suck.

My list, small as it is, would include Halladay and Ibanez, but not Werth. I have to hand it to old man Moyer as well.
Howard doesn’t particularly bother me. He’s getting paid to hit HRs and he seems to do that well. Kind of a one tool type player though.

Don’t know why I don’t like Howard. Werth just goes out and hits, plays good D and reminds me of a very good Frenchy.

I’ve kidna grown to respect Howard. He seems a quiet guy, and was a very one-dimensional player that really worked hard on some other aspects of his game, like defense, to make him more rounded.

being local, everything I have seen or heard from/about him has been positive. Other than being totally focused on his salary, but hey, more power to him.
Not sure if you count it as a demerit that he had zero loyalty to the team, and had no problem jumping for a better $ offer, and was not really hiding th efact.

OFF TOPIC: Chapman pitches today vs the Bisons looking forward to seeing how the Bisons handle him.
Also don’t look now but Strasburg is maybe a month or 2 away from making the Big club. He will be now promoted to AAA The Bisons may get a chance at facing him at the end of this month.

It had to be not wanting to spend th emoney. He was going to start in the minors anyway, and the Mets certainly wil have some SP openings soon enough.
to me, a head scratcher not taking a flyer on this guy for the price of a #5 FA SP for 3 years.

Maybe the Mets ought to pin up that picture of Victorino in their locker room.

I think Utley has pretty good numbers against the Mets too.
Don’t forget Cantu as well.

5/3/2010-1:09pm at 1:09 pm (UTC -4)
not as good as you think…i checked cantu/utley/howard/hanley and they are good but not really met killer territory
GravediggerHebner
5/3/2010-1:12pm at 1:12 pm (UTC -4)
While he undoubtedly has good numbers against the Mets they don’t really stand out above his career line so to me he’s not “killing them” more than he’s “killing” everyone else. In 6 fewer games he’s driven in 18 more runs against the Marlins than the Mets, but he does have more HR vs. the Mets than anyone else. Maybe it’s just semantics but to me ultimately he’s not “new generation.” Maybe Dirty can whip out the “honorable mention” category
Career
.296/.381/.525
vs. Mets
.281/.386/.546
Cantu’s numbers vs. the Mets are significantly worse than his career numbers. He has more HR vs. the Reds, Astros, Phillies and Nats than the Mets, and more RBI vs. the Phillies and Nats. I’m not ready to label him a “Met killer” personally.
Career
.279/.324/.460
vs. Mets
.253/.296/.422

That is surprising. But if you look at Cantu’s number for ’09 & ’10 season he has
20G 90AB 4HR 19RBIs ~.300/~.355/~.520. (For some reason, I can’t find a way to combine ’09 &’10 stats against the Mets)
Compared to his ’09 &’10 avg .290/.345/.460
Utley’s numbers against the Mets ’09
17G 57AB 15R 7HR 13RBIs .333/.458/.772. <– Definitely in the Mets killer category.

5/3/2010-1:59pm at 1:59 pm (UTC -4)
Cantu did lead the league in RBI vs. the Mets 1 of those years as you note (don’t have it in front of me).
For whatever I was looking for, which is hard to define, he didn’t make the cut, but I respect that he’s been a worthy opponent and that he makes your “killer” list. Pretty much however one defines it he’s at least in the conversation.

we had pat misch pitching in 09…im talking more like career numbers, not just one season. Jeter/Chip/Pat made a career of killing the Mets and Shane seems to be on the same track

I second that, I just hope this raises awareness for the Mets that they better take him a little more seriously because he sure takes us seriously.

The new Val.
Buffalo Bisons Bisons INF Mike Hessman named IL Batter of the Week! His 28RBI are more than any other player in ALL OF BASEBALL, one ahead of Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera.

I’ll take half or even a third of that RBI total up here on the Mets. It’s still more than GMJ and Cat combined.

5/3/2010-1:12pm at 1:12 pm (UTC -4)
those 2 are nothing to laugh about. Time to move on.
Like TRS said, just getting beltran and Murphy back (to replace cat and GM) makes the team way better.
Hessman will never see NY. I pretty much am giving up on Carter, unless Bay or Frenchy has to hit the DL.
Too bad they don’t have a 2B tearing it up down in the minors. Castillo and COra just ain’t giving me a warm and fuzzy feeling.
Castillo looks weak, and achy. I just can’t stand to see him up to the rigors of a full season, and don’t want to have to live with him and cora alternating games to keep Castillo’s legs from blowing out entirely.

5/3/2010-1:34pm at 1:34 pm (UTC -4)
I honestly think now may be a good time to move him down in the order. Let Reyes hit 2nd, which I think fits him better than 3rd as much as I like him 3rd.
Pagan, Reyes, Bay, Wright, Davis, Frenchy, Barajas, Castillo. That way according to Jerry Castillo can essential bat lead off if he is hitting 8th.
stickguy
5/3/2010-1:52pm at 1:52 pm (UTC -4)
works for me. I said all along that I thought 2nd was the best spot for Reyes (although that primarily came about with having Castillo lead off).
now that I don’t think Luis will be able to crack .350 OBP (and obviously has no power still!), if they have to play him, 8th is where he belongs. And not as big of an issue when Cora plays instead of him.

More fun with “versus the Mets” numbers (all minimum 50 plate appearances):
In 2009 4 guys had an OPS over 1.000
Utley – 1.230
Adam LaRoche – 1.211
Escobar – 1.076
Prado – 1.049
I’m not exactly sure how it’s defined or why it has partial decimals in it but 2009 “runs created”
Utley – 19.6
LaRoche – 18.5
Escobar – 18
Victorino – 15
Maybe a glimpse into why the Mets signed Mike Jacobs. The only player in 2008 to have an OPS higher than 1.000 against them was Jacobs at 1.062, next was
Chipper – .976
Willingham – .945
Kelly Johnson – .930
Werth – .911
they were the only guys over .900
2008 runs created
Werth – 13.1
K. Johnson – 12.2
C. Guzman – 12.1
Jacobs – 11.9
Howard – 11.5
2007 OPS
Rollins – 1.057
Howard – 1.013
Kearns – .971
Rowand – .923 they were the only guys over .900
2007 runs created
Rollins – 20.6
Howard – 16.4
Kearns – 14.8
Rowand – 13.5
Utley – 13.3
So Phillies certainly appear a lot in these categories over the previous 3 seasons. Someone with greater patience and knowledge than me would have to figure out whether it means they’re that good, or the Mets are that bad, or the ballpark has something to do with it, or if merely being division rivals thus having the most games, or…

Well.. considering that the Phillies have made it to WS twice in 2 years, they have good talent. I’m sure for any NL East teams, many Phillies names are sure to pop up.
