Post Game: Dual Action Cleanse

Mets are cleansed, as seen on TV

Mets are cleansed, as seen on TV

To say the New York Mets beat the San Francisco Giants in dramatic fashion would be an understatement.  Allow me to elaborate.  With the Mets leading 4-3 in the 9th inning, closer Francisco Rodriguez came on for the save.  With 1 out he promptly gave up a long solo home run to pinch-hitter John Bowker tying the game at 4 runs apiece.  1 out later Aaron Rowand singled.   With Rowand on 2nd Mark DeRosa drove a ground ball single up the middle on which Luis Castillo made an excellent diving stop, keeping the ball in the infield and keeping Rowand from scoring.  That brought the Giants’ best hitter Pablo Sandoval to the plate.  He hit a foul pop over the Mets dugout which Ike Davis, already a hero of the game offensively with 2 solo home runs, caught for his second falling-into-the-dugout catch of his rookie season, ending the threat.  Then in the bottom of the 9th Jeff Francoeur grounded out leading off against reliever Sergio Romo bringing Davis to the plate.  The crowd eagerly anticipated his 3rd home run of the game but he showed the patience of a veteran in a drawing walk.  That brought Rod Barajas, who had homered earlier as well, to the plate.  The crowd didn’t get an incredible 3rd homer from Davis but was happy to settle for a 2nd homer from Barajas, a 2-run walk off shot to left, giving the Mets a 6-4 win.

The Mets took the early lead.  In the bottom of the 1st Jose Reyes singled with 2 outs, then stole 2nd base.  Jason Bay doubled to deep center to drive in Reyes for a 1-0 Mets lead.  In the bottom of the 2nd they added on.  With 1 out Davis stepped up to the plate.  He got the start despite the opposing pitcher being Jonathan Sanchez, a left handed pitcher who has held left handed batters hitless in 17 at bats this season.  He promptly launched a home run to deep right, bouncing if off the facade of the 2nd deck at Citi Field, a solo shot and his 2nd of the season.  Barajas followed with a solo home run of his own and the Mets led 3-0 after 2 innings.

The Giants got 1 run in the top of the 3rd.  Eli Whiteside doubled leading off the inning.  A Sanchez sacrifice bunt moved Whiteside up to 3rd base.  He scored on a Rowand ground out making it 3-1 Mets.  But Davis, not satisfied with one home run off of the pitcher who had held left handers hitless to this point, hit another solo shot making it 4-1 Mets.  In the top of the 5th the Giants made it a 1 run game.  Again it was Whiteside who got things started.  He singled with 1 out.  Sanchez again attempted to bunt Whiteside along but this time his bunt was so well placed that Mets starter Mike Pelfrey fielded it late and too close to 1st base.  His throw to Castillo covering was too hard and deflected down the right field line as Whiteside moved to 3rd base on the throwing error.  Sanchez was safe at first with what the official scorer ruled an infield single.  Rowand then doubled driving in Whiteside.  The next batter,  DeRosa, grounded out to shortstop but Sanchez scored on the play making it 4-3.  The best was yet to come.

Well, that was fun. Nice start to my weekend.

Longest home win streak since 2006.
First time ever Mets hit 4 HRs in one game at home. Never did it at Shea.

Nice game for Pelf. He deserved a win but a big W for the team as a consolation prize.

What more can you say about Barajas and Ike? Ike looks real nice in that 7th spot. Talk about stretching out the lineup with our 7th and 8th hitters…..

Someone needs to tell KRod that the idea is for him to get a save, not a win.

Let’s keep the win streak at home going tomorrow, boys.

It’s great to see the Mets in one of those jubilant jumping piles at home plate.

Davis with 2 of those amazing catches this season, WOW!

good job coming back from the blown save. Takes a team with cajones and grit to do that.

Now, let’s see Johan channel his inner Pelf, and come up like the ace he is supposed to be.

I want at least 7, if not 8, and a shutout. Why not?

    interesting item from Philly.

Moyer became the oldest pitcher ever to throw a CG SO.

Man, the braves offense (especially if heyward is out or not himself) just ain’t very good.

And I can’t think of any legitimate complaint about Manuel! Woo hoo! (Although I would’ve let Pelfrey keep pitching, but that’s more a difference of opinion thing)

that inning sounds about like it. But, i didn’t tune in until the 6th, and had the sound off, so I might not be the best judge.
