Thanks for posting this, jerz. I normally listening to these post game interviews but missed them this afternoon.
Perez, as maddening as he is, has not once used any thing or anyone else other than himself to excuse his bad outings. I’ll give him that much credit….
He says he’s healthy, he says the problem today was the grip on the ball and he was all over the place, couldn’t throw a strike. That’s rather stating the obvious.
I know pitchers have bad outings once in a while. Perez however seems to make it a habit. To me, the cold was a factor with his hands and he just plain was not able to make the adjustments for that. When Ollie isn’t pitching good, it’s like he tries to reinvent himself out there. Just starts trying anything at all to see what will work. Somehow or other, I don’t think that’s gonna get it done…

It’d be nice if there was anyone in the dugout or on the field with him that could maybe guide him a little, teach him a little, calm him down a little. Manuel has pretty much given up on him from what I can see, except that he’s still a pitcher and he’s still got talent and he’s still trying to win games for the Mets. Manuel’s stubbornly insisting to himself that he sucks and either doens’t care enough to fix it, or doesn’t know how. It’s not like he’s a fan who can just say “he sucks” and run with the emotion of it whether or not it’s actually true. (It’s not. I’ve seen signs that Perez is trying to do things to be a real pitcher. Signs I saw in Pelfrey last year, but the guidance isn’t their, and I’m not sure Perez is as smart as Pelfrey to figure it out on his own.

All very good points.
I’ve heard exasperation when discussing Ollie from Manuel, Ron Darling and Bobby O. I’m not sure what Warthen’s take on him is. Bobby O said what Warthen will have to do is ‘go back to square one’ with Ollie. I’m not excusing Ollie but I’m willing to bet he’s had about 100 different things thrown at him in the last year. Just doesn’t seem to be anyone in the Met organization right now who can get through to him and/or hasn’t come up with the right approach. Heck, I heard even Koufax gave him some pointers in ST, but I kind of got the impression Koufax had no patience to really spend much time with him.
Since they signed him and they still owe him like 24Mil, they should make every effort and exhaust all possibilities.

Ollie has made strides, but I don’t think he’s that knowledgeable about pitching either. So when he’s got a billion things thrown at him, he doens’t know what’s best. And if something from his pitching coach isn’t working, he’s not quite like Maine to discover that and go back to what does work. I don’t understand why Perez should be lacking in velocity off a leg injury. So it seems like it’s something more related to his mechanics and between-game workouts.

No they shouldn’t they should force him to take an assignment in the minors if he rejects that offer scott borris will have more mud on his face. Let’s face it the padres and the pirates couldn’t fix him and niether can we.I spent the a whole month in PSL this year and when you talk to people in baseball which I was fortunate enough to do they all said Perez’s sucess was due to his incosistancy also the main reason for his failures.

We are 9 games from being 1/4 way through season.
Time to start isolating where we are and what the Mets can do to improve the situation.
Time for some tough love you think?
INFIELD
1B – Ike Davis / Fernando Tatis
2B – Luis Castillo / Alex Cora
3B – David Wright / Fernando Tatis
SS – Jose Reyes / Alex Cora
_C – Rod Barajas / Henry Blanco
Is it time to bring Ruben Tejada back up and as the backup 2nd baseman after a slow start he is currently hitting .278?
OUTFIELD
LF – Jason Bay / Gary Matthews Jr / Angel Pagan / Frank Catalanotto
CF – Angel Pagan / Gary Matthews Jr
RF – Jeff Francoeur / Gary Matthews Jr
Is it time to move CF/Gary Matthews Jr & OF/Frank Catalanotto? If so for who CF/Jason Pridie and OF/Chris Carter?
How about the rotation? Is Taka ready to start and if so who goes to pen Ollie?
How about the pen? Is there anything that they should do there?

well organized.
objectively, you could make the case that all of the bench (other than BU catcher, of course!) could be upgraded.
But, realistically that ain’t happening. so, tatis is likely safe all year. And Cora, due to his contract, Omar love, and “intangibles” we may be stuck with. But if the offense continues to be non existent, might have to cut and run anyway. But for now, he is staying.
so yeah, Cat has no leg to stand on. He is cheap, has no history, no FO complications, and has sucked for years. He has to go. Carter is a wonderful option right now. More likely, he somehow survives until murphy comes back?
GM they seem to be more hung up on (the trade, the $). But he is worthless. I could take carter and murphy. Or evans if you want another RH bat. or hell, Hessman if you just want a bat.
I know about CF, but with pagan a FT guy, frenchy or bay can cover for a day. Pridie is not really any better than the other guys.
Carter for cat, do it today.
Murphy for GM when he is ready? May really depend on Beltran.

There is actually a “better” (or less messy option).
Call up F mart to replace GM.
That way, you got another guy that can play CF (and no, I don’t want to debate again what the mets think his future is!) since he has spent a lot of time doing it.
Is it the best way to develop him? Maybe not, but at this point, are they developing him to be a Cf, RF, or trade bait?
So, my opinion, let him share time with pagan, and do some platooning with Frenchy. He can also spell Bay when he needs a break.
So, I vote for Carter and F mart right now (unless of course martinez got hurt again) for GM and Cat.
Lose no flexibility, and gain a ton of bats and defense.
And if Cora keeps blowing chunks, tejada could be an option. And tatis? Maybe evans?
But, give me carter and F mart for GM and Cat, and they can get by with the other two.

FM is hitting .247. Why would you bring him up now?

because anything is an improvement. and he can play all 3 OF positions, which seems to be a requirement to replace GMjr.

finally, for the pen, of course I vote for mejia down! But I guess that ain’t happening, but it should when Iggy comes back at least.
and if anyone else falls apart, there are a few guys (like the one rule 5 guy) that are doing well, so at some point, there could be an upgrade, or at least a nice chance to get mejia back in the minors.
