A win is a win and especially with yesterdays game – I’ll take it ! But note to Jerry – let your starting pitchers work out of tough jams late in the game !! Yes Johan had two players on with a tough batter at the plate that represented the tying and go ahead run – but there were two outs and the Giants are a free swinging team ! In my opinion that is a chance that you have to take, especially with the fact that Johan only threw 101 pitches through 8 2/3 innings. And if you do decide that you are going to take him out why put in a pitcher (Fernando Neive) that has pitched in nearly every game this season, who might be tired , spent, or even maybe – just maybe there is now a book on how to hit Fernando . I personally feel that if Jerry was to take Johan out of the game then he should have brought in Mejia. Jerry said that he wants to see more from the rookie, and that he would put him into more high pressure situations – well I think that part of the eighth inning would have been the perfect time. All I can say is thank all that is good and pure for both Henry Blanco & Rod Barajas, because if Brian Schneider was still playing on this team , we would be under .500. By the way the aforementioned Schneider was placed on the D.L. by the Phillies yesterday with a elbow problem. Like I said – he’s their problem now.

And with that said… HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!
Happy Birthday wishes go out to utility player from the ’67-’68 team ,Jerry Buchek (1942) .
New York Mets traded original Mets catcher,Hobie Landrith to the Baltimore Orioles for Mets legend ” Marvelous” Marv Throneberry on May 9, 1962.
New York Mets released one time Mets ace,Craig Swan on May 9, 1984. I remember being heartbroken when this happened, because the team was starting to do extremely well- and I wanted Craig to finally play on a winning team, but his arm was about to fall off , and he was never the same pitcher after rotator cuff surgery.
New York Mets claimed pitcher, Mark Dewey on waivers from the San Francisco Giants on May 9, 1991.
New York Mets signed free agent pitcher, Doug Linton on May 9, 2001.
New York Mets signed free agent pitcher Brian Lawrence on May 9, 2007. Unfortunately Lawrence didn’t distinguish himself with the Mets, pitching in six games with the Mets with a e.r.a of over nine.
And just asking , whos fatter? Mo Vaughn, Bengie Molina or Pablo Sandoval ?

rusty, it was 72/3, not 82/3.
Schnieder has an elbow? wonder if the early reports of being out with an achilles injury were wrong, or he has both?
At least the Phils could dip into their fabulous depth (you know, the same depth that has Wilson Valdes as the starting SS) for that hot prospect C. You know, the guy that is a career MiL stiff, that probably makes them wish they still had Coste, if not Robinson Cancel!

Can’t complain too much about our BP this year, even though they coughed up the lead in the last two games. Not sure what KRod is doing b/c I wouldn’t consider him overworked, especially coming into Friday night’s game. But Nieve…..I’m mean does Jerry know we’ve got other arms in that BP?
I really had no problem with Johan coming out but have to agree with Rusty here, Mejia might have been the better choice. And using 3 BP arms to get one out in the 8th? That was just crazy.

“why put in a pitcher (Fernando Neive) that has pitched in nearly every game this season, who might be tired , spent, or even maybe – just maybe there is now a book on how to hit Fernando .”
Nieve didn’t give up the tying run Feliciano did.

I think it was 1 on and 2 out because Sandoval Sac Fly’d for the second out to score the guy from third making it guy at first with 2 out with a 4-3 lead and Johan on the bump. If it was 2 on and 2 out with Johan on the bump at that stage I’d have pulled him. But not with 2 out and a guy on first.

You are correct it was 7 2/3 and 2 outs, runner on 1st.
Perhaps related to the conversation, when Sandoval sac flied for that 2nd out which got Johan to 7 2/3 innings pitched, it set the 2010 season record for the longest outing of any Met starting pitcher.

Not by pitch count though I believe. I thought we had some go in the 115-117 pitch range but they only lasted into the sixth. He also only threw 71 in last Sunday’s debacle, at 101 I’d have given him one more in part also with his early exit last week. Should have had gas in the tank. But we won, and at the end of the day that’s what counts so by default pulling him was the right move, I guess. Given we couldn’t get Johan through eight then to K-Rod, who’s first in today when Ollie’s done early in the cold & wind? That’s where my thought process was to try to squeeze one more batter out of Johan. With that, on to today’s contest. LGM!

Understood.
My ultimate point on this particular issue is only that I felt at that moment it wasn’t cut and dried one way or the other, and I leaned toward the move Jerry made.
But your side of the discussion certainly has merit and strong points. The only thing I object to is when this decision is taken to a “Jerry is obviously an idiot” level because I really don’t think it was a slam dunk in any way to leave Johan in and I think that this move is not a good example for those who support firing Jerry ASAP to use in their arguments.
