Mets Minors 5/11

NOTE: “Finally, cuban RHP Yunesky Maya is declared Free Agent, he still needs to be unblocked by the OFAC, what is about to happen soon.”- twitter- qbano34…. The Mets and White Sox have long been tied to Maya so he could potentially be Ollie’s replacement. He is a “pitcher” more than a pure stuff guy but reportedly works 89-92 and throws 4 pitches.

Personally I think Ollie is going to be around unless he gets injured, but it’s nice to read this about Maya because I’m not terribly excited about the immediate in-house replacements for starting pitchers and Maya would be nice to have around in the event any of the current 5 go on the DL.

And just to stem the obvious sidebar from my comment, I love what Takahashi does for this team out of the bullpen and I would prefer to leave him there.

I’m in agreement with you on Taka.
How many times do you think it’s been said that a team shouldn’t move a pitcher in the BP to the starting rotation b/c he’s too valuable in the BP? Not many, I’ll guess….

  2. metsfan4decades

I was wondering if the Mets were one of the ‘several’ teams looking at Maya…

Related to the “replacement for GMJ” topic, you didn’t mention this so kudos to you but while I’m reading this I also have the FAN on and a caller actually brought up moments ago “what a shame it was to trade away a serviceable reliever for this guy.”

Enough of that drivel already. Stokes has allowed 24 hits and 16 walks in 16 innings, that’s a WHIP of 2.500, and he’s allowed 16 runs, 13 earned. He’s walked more guys than he’s struck out, his K/BB is 0.94, and he has zero wins and zero saves. Now he’s on the disabled list with “shoulder fatigue.” None of that would’ve been helping the Mets this season. GMJ has scored 7 runs for the Mets this season, I have a feeling those 7 runs have helped the Mets just a bit more than Stokes has helped the Angels.

    1. stickguy

those numbers are mind boggling ugly.

    2. metsfan4decades

      I heard that caller too.
Stokes was stashed in the BP, not used by Jerry until somewhere around June – if I remember correctly. Then he was used all the time. We all know how second half of last season was. Stokes was probably not used in too many pressure situations, since we didn’t have a lead all that often. Wonder if that then gave the impression of ‘serviceable’ reliever….

    3. ceetar

Bruney had a 2.25 WHIP coming into the three batters he let on without an out last night. I remarked to my friend that maybe they shouldn’t even get in the batters box.

    4. trs86

Agreed, the guy most likely was not even going to make the team and was out of options. Why do we think he would have made the team but a guy like Parnell would not have?

    5. Kingman 26

Stokes has been continuing his awful career.

However, Nick Evans could probably have done what GMJ has, and might even have an RBI.

Stokes is worthless, but those of us who were up in arms about not wanting GMJ were equally correct though.

      1. trs86

But it was an easy gamble. You get someone who could work out as a 4th OF with starting experience. Yeah we knew he was bad but his numbers are actually worse. Would we be that upset with his numbers from last year if he was just a PH and occasional day off guy? Obviously not. Perhaps he has not adjusted to this type of role and will not thus your risk failed and you move on. Still not a bad idea.

        1. metro

Just to be clear… I had ZERO problem with the trade for GMJ and Stokes stinks. When I say “potential replacement” it’s only in reference to GMJ looking absolutely awful THIS YEAR the trade itself was more than fine (other than the fact I have to believe there were better options out there than GMJ) but giving up Stokes was a no-brainer.

  4. stickguy

sounds like a perfect guy to invest some money in, to build instant SP depth, something they could certainly use right now.

and we have no idea what kind of shape he is in, or when he would even be ML ready. So entirely possible this is a signing for next year.

  5. metro

Maya has been training for over 2 months now in the Mets facility (doesn’t mean much as Julio Lugo do the same and didn’t sign here) but I suspect he would be ready to get some minor league starts by Mid-June if he signed today and able to help the Mets by July (if he proved he was good enough).

  6. stickguy

this is interesting. and the last nugget seems to fly in the face of the WIlpons being broke and about to go on food stamps.

  7. satishram

    Wow, Duda has 31 RBI?

Nice to hear about Yuniesky Maya, as said above. Whether he’s replacing anyone or not, I want the kid in our farm system.

You would’ve thought Calero would have looked ok by now.

GMJ was a risk that it was safe to take, because the Mets had a bundle of RH Relievers, and still do. The Angels are paying the majority of his contract, and it didn’t work out. It’s not much to swallow, because the Mets do have an interesting kid in Feliciano down there. You can expect GMJ to be gone once Beltran returns anyway(hoping for a speedy return?)

    1. stickguy

Feliciano is actually a career MiL guy. I think he is about 33 or so now. But, still a viable option to replace GM, as he has hit very well for the last few years, and he does play CF.

      1. satishram

        Whoops, you’re right. I think he’s 30, but that’s still a stretch for calling him a kid.

Either way, I know one of the arguments i’ve heard on keeping GMJ is that he can patrol CF in the case that Pagan gets hurt, but we do have Pridie and Feliciano who should be able to fill that role just as well.

So anyone know if the weather will be cooperating for today’s game at 1pm?

    1. tkfj

Maybe not Prismo, but I can tell you that the weather models currently show the area recieving only a little over a .10 inch of precip. The radar is pretty clear and it looks like the bulk of the precipitation will stay to the south of the NY Area over SE Maryland and Virginia.

      Look good to go.

  9. stickguy

and another name of a possible SP pick-up. Yeah he stinks, but I know he is one of TRS’ personal favs. From MLBTR:

Ian Snell has a $4.25MM salary this year, so he’ll probably be non-tendered after his ’11 option is declined. Snell is now in the bullpen, so the Mariners may try to move him regardless of the standings.

    1. trs86

Agreed. I have always like Snell. Could now get him for cheap. The M’s need a 1B badly so why not Murphy and a lower level for Snell?

      1. metro

I’d be surprised if they had interest in Murphy. They are in dire need of “pop” and 1b is a position they can CLEARLY upgrade in that regard. I think more realistically they would want someone like Carter as part of the deal though Jack Z. preaches the importance of defense so who knows.

        1. trs86

I think Murphy would be a good pick up for them as they need offense at so many positions. Even if it was as a future utility guy.

  10. metro

Duda is absolutely HORRIFIC vs. lefties… that said he has a plus eye at the plate, can play 1b and OF and is finally flashing the power that made him a huge recruit to USC.

  11. CaseStreet

Accoring to MLBTR, if the Yanks resign Andy, Jeter and Mariano, they would have to increase payroll to sign a big free agent. That got me thinking about Crawford, since everyone assumes he’s headed to the Bronx.

    If:
    1. Frenchy fails to warrant his $5M+ Arb. contract for 2011, and
    2. F-Mart isn’t deemed to be ready for 2011, and
    3. Beltran continues to have his issues,

would non-tendering Francouer and signing Crawford be the way the Mets should go for 2011?

Then in 2012, if Beltran isn’t resigned you can move Crawford over to play CF and hopefully F-Mart would be ready to play RF.

    Is this scenario possible?
P.S. I really hope F-Mart is starting next year (saving money on Frenchy) so the Mets can go after Cliff Lee.

    1. DNDJohan aka kistics

But but Frenchy is a really good guy….

    2. trs86

Crawford is a LF and does not want to play CF. He has never played RF.

  12. DNDJohan aka kistics

Is the dugout working? Can’t seem to get in.
