Playing magic the gathering perhaps ?

Lotus, Land, Channel, Fireball, game over!

      1. ceetar

        Mountain, to be specific.

        1. njstuckintx

          Or Tiaga, Badlands, or Plateau.

          1. njstuckintx

Volcanic Island as well. Ah, the good old days.

          2. ceetar

These were super old days. the Lotus and Mox’s went out of print as overpowered pretty fast. as did the dual lands.

          3. njstuckintx

Yeah, I started when back with Arabian Nights and Unlimited were the releases. Played for a while, sold my deck for $1500. Looking on it now, had I held on, I could have sold my deck for $6K or more. Who would have thunk it.

          4. ceetar

I’ve still got all my cards. If I could find the time and/or money I might even consider playing again. I always enjoyed it. I started just after the Dark I think, so I just missed most of teh real valuable cards.

  2. prismo

Jerry’s out of the meeting, apparently was NOT fired yet.

  3. tkfj

    Jerry fired…..

    Omar put on watch…..

    In an ideal world. :)

  4. prismo

    Warthen up next.

    1. stickguy

maybe they were telling jerry the coaches were going?

  5. udontmesswthejohan

    And the beat goes on…

  6. darknova306

Reading all the writers’ tweets about what’s going on it really seems like they’re making a big spectacle out of this. Something better actually change after it’s all over.

Manuel briefly leaves closed door meeting, returns to meeting with Warthen, Randy Niemann, trainer Ray Ramirez. 5 minutes ago via txt

I sense one ore more coach(es) are getting fired.

      Where’s HoJo?

  8. tkfj

Here goes the Mets being Hollywood about it again.

Only problem is, not a damn thing will be done.

    1. prismo

      At least it’s entertaining!

      1. tkfj

Maybe. But if I wanted to be entertained by melodramatics I could watch a soap opera or the documentary LA Lakers-Kobe/Shaq years.

Who am I kidding though, this team has been a soap opera since Sept 07.

  9. GravediggerHebner

I am guessing this has more to do with what to do with the pitching staff/roster machinations given the Niese/Ollie issues than it does with firing anyone.

    1. darknova306

Don’t crush our hope that the axe is coming… that’s all we have left. :p

      1. prismo

        +1

      2. GravediggerHebner

        That is sad.

        1. GravediggerHebner

But seriously, I think that’s at least as logical an explanation for why the pitching coach, bullpen coach & trainer are in the meeting but the hitting coach is not as is the hitting coach is being fired. Cuz that’s the alternative in my eyes to a roster move – HoJo being canned, not Jerry. But they wouldn’t really need Neimann’s and Warthen’s input on hitting coach.

          1. ceetar

Maybe it’s like how Jerry used to make the pitchers stay on the mound to hand teh ball off to their successor. One day Bobby V’s gonna come in on a bullpen cart out of CF and just climb into the dugout.

          2. darknova306

Oh I agree, I just very much want change. It sucks to turn on a game with the only expectation being that I’ll see a new form of ineptitude on the field.

          3. GravediggerHebner

Understood. But I don’t think coaching staff turnover, either a single coach or a huge purge, is going to change that.

It’s David Wright that can’t recognize a pitch or prefers to backhand balls than get in front of them defensively, it’s Jose Reyes who pops everything up, it’s Ollie and now Maine that can’t throw strikes, it’s KRod whose forgotten how to close. The coaches aren’t responsible for these highly paid professionals spitting the bit. I don’t see how Ricky Bones or Bob Melvin or blank are going to alter any of that. That stuff isn’t likely to change without benefit of a spring training to implement a plan and practice it.

          4. Mr North Jersey

You don’t think firing HoJo will fix the hitting situation?

          5. GravediggerHebner

Perhaps. Not strongly enough to advocate for it.

A baseball season is very long, and it feels even longer when the team isn’t doing well. I see firing hitting coaches as, I’m trying to find the right way to put this, ummm…

I am failing to find a less insulting way to put this so please understand I’m not referring to those who want coaches fired as children, but for lack of a fairer phrase I think firing coaches is like offering a child a shiny penny for their dirty quarter.

That’s not the best analogy but I have to run and I can’t think of a better one. Three card monty?

No offense intended to those who want coaching changes I’ll try and think of a better way to put it for later.

          6. DNDJohan aka kistics

yes with HoJo gone, this team will go 120-4.

4 games are lost when Ollie is given 2nd chance to start.

          7. Mr North Jersey

            :-) None taken Grave.

I agree with you. I personally find the whole firing a hitting coach mentality is more to send a signal than actually trying to fix the problem since I feel hitting coaches impact on players are over rated.

I just thought you was one of the it’s HoJo’s fault that Mets are not hitting.

          8. darknova306

It might not change everything overnight, but we might be able to see improvement over the course of the season. Also, a manager that’s not as dopey as our current one would immediately help things, at least a little. No more giving away outs with ridiculous bunts, etc.

          9. DNDJohan aka kistics

I think change in managers and coaches may change the approach these hitters/pitchers take. Perhaps more and/or better game planning can be done with different manager/coaches.

I mean look at the way offense is approaching the plate. Swing at first pitch you see. Swing as hard as you can.

        2. darknova306

So is the state of this team.

          1. GravediggerHebner

            That’s fair.

But it’s not like that is a shock or surprise, is it?

          2. darknova306

            Sadly, no.

    2. njstuckintx

It makes sense, but does that require Omar’s attendance? They have things like Skype these days.

    3. metsfan4decades

      Exactly what I was thinking.

  10. DNDJohan aka kistics

    AdamRubinESPN

Sounds like R.A. Dickey may be joining the Mets. No official announcement. That could mean he’s starting Wednesday … or backing up Valdes.

    uhhh…. against the Phillies?

    1. DNDJohan aka kistics

scratch that… I’m already looking at a week ahead.

      1. ceetar

Wednesday’s starter is slotted for the Phillies opener actually.

    2. ceetar

no, this wednesday against the Nats. but sounds like Rubin’s just speculating and guessing right now.

    3. ceetar

ahh, it’s because he has a locker. Which is kind of odd, as they wouldn’t havea starter until Wednesday..in a different city.

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

maybe they are thinking Niese could go on the DL?

        1. ceetar

yeah, but if Dickey isn’t with the team now, even if they DL Niese, are they going to bring Dickey down here tomorrow, and have him dress if he’s not even going to pitch?

          1. DNDJohan aka kistics

well he might pitch out of the BP which means Valdes will get the start on Wed.

Or this could all be a ploy where they will bring in a mysterious SP that throws 120 mph FB and 80 mph change up.

          2. ceetar

his nameplate has now been removed. that was fast.

          3. DNDJohan aka kistics

LOL.. that was RA’s 15 minutes of fame…

  11. tkfj

If all this really is, is dicussing potential rotation replacements and other lineup issues, what is the point of Wilpon making the trip down?

Is there a way to handle this discreetly without blowing things out of proportion? You know, like a conference call/dicussion. Was it neccessary for Jeffy to fly down to Atlanta, if this was the main issue?

    1. njstuckintx

That’s what I said above. No reason for him to come on down that can’t be done via conference call/Skype. There is something more to this.

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

        LOL Skype!

  12. stickguy

man, this team just likes to screw with the fans. get us all excited for something good finally, and it may just be an organizational regrouping to decide on Dickey? Like they couldn’t just have a conference call to come up with that?

  13. DNDJohan aka kistics

Listening to Steve Phillips & MF interview. Very interesting discussion on the business side of the baseball. I know those two guys aren’t exactly the fan favorites, but still very interesting.

    1. metsfan4decades

I would have to be really bored and/or looking for something to fill background noise because it’s too quiet to ever listen to these two together.

I gave it a shot the 3 hours MF first had Phillips on – after he announced he’d have like a weekly spot with him. Three long hours talking mostly about Phillips addiction and treatment plus taking calls on said addiction and treatment – on a sports talk radio drive by afternoon show.

MF just annoys me most days and Phillips – who I don’t think is all that smart a baseball guy – went on my list that Sunday night ESPN game where he went off on a rant about Beltran.

  14. stickguy

well, now that Jeffy and Jerry have spoken (steady as she goes!), just gotta say dang it.

they had a chance to try and clean up some of the mess, while they are still close enough and with enough time for it to matter, and are too wimpish to pull the trigger.

So instead, we will be stuck with Jerry and the coaches for probably the entire year (unless things get so bad they can’t put it off any longer, but by then it won’t matter)\

And the saddest thing is, almost guaranteed that they are all cut loose at the end of the season to get the team a fresh start, and they all probably know it.

    1. metsfan4decades

There’s still time for this year. I have to agree with a few others who said if they’re thinking about it, it probably wouldn’t be done before the Yankee series.
