A. He doesn’t want to come to NY
B. He wants to go to a contender
Would be a nice pick up though

So heres the thoughts, who would he be going to?
I think in general the AL East. He would not want to damage his next contract that way.
I also think the NL West and AL Central are out. I just don’t see a fit.
So to me here are the teams
Cards, Rangers, Braves, Mets, Nats. Now the last 3 I am not sure fit the “contender” request but right now I guess all of them are still in the race.

He’s got Cardinals written all over him IMO. And if that happens, that’s gonna be a tough team.

There are 2 things working against that.
1) The Astros would not want to trade him in division
2) The Cards can’t really afford him nor would they want to pay a pitcher that much. It’s just not like them. Not only that they are not big on trading top prospects.

Yeah, I have to agree with this.
That being said, I’ll bet he doesn’t see the Mets as a contender. But looking at the NL east, just about every team right now with the exception of a handful can be considered a contender.
Of course come 31 July, the ‘true’ contenders should have started separating themselves from the pack.

But I think if the Mets stick around, with addition of Oswalt, they can definitely be a contender…..
or I’m hoping….

SNY pregame at Citi, Carlin just announced ‘stick around, we’ve got breaking news about John Maine’.

News is:
He’s been placed on the DL with weakness in his right shoulder.
Dessens has been called up.
Maine will have tests done.

So much for Maine saying he’s not injured. Who wants to bet he never makes it back into the rotation?

I don’t know if Maine is feeling any pain, which is why he’s been insisting he’s not injured.
But IMO, he clearly has to have something wrong with that arm, pain or no pain.

LOL gotta love this Maine quote:
“It was the first batter of the game,” Maine said. “The first pitch wasn’t hard, but the last few were 89, which is where I’ve been all year. I didn’t see anything different.”
Maine actually is a habitual liar. He never broke 85.

Maine and Ollie both out of the rotation…addition by subtraction…

I could see Oswalt going to Texas…

That one makes the most sense as I think they have the cash and prospects.

exactly plus they have the need and its a place Oswalt would definitely want to go (at least you would think)

They are a definite possibility, but I think Rangers are going thru ownership change, no?

is being a little bi**h an acceptable injury for the DL?

so maine on DL and Dessens up. Now, who goes down this weekend for iggy?
frankly, based on the way they are both itching lately (forgetting about the best interest of the team and players future!0 Mejia is a much smarter option to go down, keeping Acosta.
That pen doesn’t even look too bad, even with Taka out. ALthough I guess it means Valdes stays in the rotation next time they need 5 guys?
Not at all surprised about maine, but was thinking they would have called up a guy that can start too.

Mejia down and then when 5th SP needed, Acosta down and Misch up

looking at the headline, it dawned on me that 7/31 is a long, long ways away. Actually more time than what has elapsed so far.
and a ot can change in that span. Including the Met’s rotation, record, and chance of competing for the post season!
Oh, and a biggie: would not surprise me at all if Oswalt broke down after another 8-10 starts. That back issue they are trying to work around just sounds really scary.
really not practical IMO to think about him fixing our immediate needs.
Unless of course, he can hit in the clutch!

I sincerely hope we’re not talking about this anemic offense come 31 July. I’m just so tired of watching about it, reading about it, hearing about it.
Even with the current state of our SP – two on the DL and one that shouldn’t be in the BP…I STILL think our offense is the biggest problem.

5/21/2010-11:47pm at 11:47 pm (UTC -4)
I agree. even if the SP had pitched exactly the same overall, if the offense had just had even say 2 of the “big” guys having career normal years (basically what you expect of them, not even anythign eye popping), they are probably 2 games behind the phils, at worst, and maybe ahead.
They wasted a ton of well ptiched games earlier in the year. and even with the current state of the pitching disarray, very few games where they are really being blown out of it.
A very bad trend (that we have seen from the mets before) is scoring just enough runs to lose.

Houston will prob accept an infielder, a starting pitcher and someone else (ideally another Infielder). Tejada, Murphy, Niese & another? + Fmart?
They would have value to Murphy, as they need a 3B and isn’t that Murph’s original position? He’ll have more value to them then to another team.

you are giving up this much (including a current member (well, when he gets off the DL) of the rotation, thereby opening up another hole), for a guy that has degenerative back issues, and supposedly has to get a shot before every start, because he really needs back surgery?
Like I said, I doubt he goes until closer to the deadline, and who knows if he breaks down by then.
Although it probably makes sense for Houston to trade him ASAP, Hoston rarely does things that make sense, and of course, Oswalt controls the trade process (deciding where to go).

Shot before every start? Man, lay off the sauce this early in the morning.
He will get traded early, I’m convinced of this. Mainly due to they will get more for him now than later at the deadline, he’s sick of his 2-5 or 2-6 record, which ever it is, and the fact he has a sub 3 ERA.
As I am not a big evaluator of talent, maybe it does take less than I proposed above. Hopefully, anyway. But I know they have nothing, absolutely nothing, at the “ready to jump up to the major leagues” level in their organization. Murph can take over at 3B asap or 1B if they move Berkman. Tejada can take over their SS/2B right away. They’re going to need a pitcher as well. Maybe they take Holt. Maybe Takahashi. Maybe Parnell and something else. I wouldn’t want to lose Niese myself, but you can’t realistically give up all crap to get something good in return. (look at what it took to get Peavy, who was coming off an injury as well!) I’d prefer to not include F-mart, but honestly, he’s all hype and no production to me at this point. If Fmart, Murphy and Holt gets you Oswalt, I’d do it.
I agree on the controlling his own destiny/destination part, and I’m not sure he would accept NY. That will be the kicker. Also, if he accepts a trade, I bet he pulls the “make my option year gauranteed” card as well.
I guess I sound like I’m championing Oswalt, but there really isn’t another option out currently (with the Reds and Padres doing so well) other than Big Z. I’d rather Big O to Big Z any day. If something doesn’t happen sooner than later, we are going to have to just close up shop, hold onto the kids and ride out the storm until the offseason.

Forget ozwalt the last thing we need is another always hurt starter, how about hitting ,we just lost all 8 of our last 10 games mostly because of supposedly good offence.I know maine and ollie are gone but I think that’s a benifit to the team. If we don’t start hitting we will be exactly in the same spot as houston funny how so many of us think we are just a starting pitcheraway from contention.

We have good hitters that just aren’t hitting. Would you trade Bay for J.Guillen from the Royals? No. But Guillen is hitting better… I can’t understand myself why the players we have aren’t hitting, but I can’t think Omar hasn’t put together a decent lineup. I mean, come on, Wright, Reyes, Bay… If they were hitting anything that they should be, the Mets would have a significantly better record. And you aren’t getting rid of them.
And no, we need prob. 2 starting pitchers, but you need to get 1 before you can get the 2nd.
