This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty The Alex ” Cora’D It !!” Edition 05-22-10

Well I guess Luis Castillo feels better about himself this morning. That’s right folks , us Mets fans have a new goat to boo the hell out of for the rest of his contract – and that goat is Alex Cora !! I am not going to rehash the god awful events that happened in the sixth inning that wasted a fine debut by Hisinori Takahashi ( keep him in the rotation !!)- but needless to say this was a deflating loss. And it irks me that Jerry would put Uncle Elmer Dessens into the game after the man just made it into the locker room after a long commute from Buffalo ! Jerry you said that you wanted to use Jenrry Mejia in more important situations – well I think that was a important enough !! And furthermore – why are you putting Ollie Perez into close games !!! He should be buried in that pen, only to be used in blowouts !!!! And once again I cringe when I hear the Skankee faithful whooping and hollering during the post game show !! Lets hope we get a really good performance by Mike Pelfrey tonight, because if our offenses’ bats are still cold – and Phil Hughes pitches well I think that it might possibly be the that sends this team into the abyss. ( don’t mean to be so negative – I’m just not feeling it today). Oh and another thing, I am happy we honored the 2000 team – but did we have to have it when we were playing the Skanks ? I mean this is the team that we lost to in 2000 ! Good idea – bad timing !!

                                                                                  ” BAAAAAAAA”

And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!

Sadly on this date in 1974,Ernie White , the second pitching coach in Mets history passed away.

New York Mets released Gil Hodges on May 22, 1963. As we all know , he would become the man who would take the ’69 team to the promise land !

In possibly one of the most important trades the Mets made ( don’t believe the Mike Francesa who takes credit for making it happen !). The New York Mets traded Preston Wilson, Geoff Goetz and Ed Yarnall to the Florida Marlins for Mike Piazza on May 22, 1998.

New York Mets released reliever, Scott Strickland on May 22, 2005. He now works as a repo man !

New York Mets released middle reliever, Jorge Sosa on May 22, 2008.

And Mo Vaughn was in attendance last night, He was challenging Mariano Rivera to a fight to the death – saying ” There can be only one Mo “!!!

good idea, bad timing: Isn’t that one of the Met team mottos?

Maybe today the break out the lumber. Why not? It seems they do everything backwards. Hit good pitchers, get stiffled by stiffs. Well, the stiffling happened last night, so they are due!

as to the pen, elmer was a odd move having just run in. But I thought Jerry said pre-game that Valdes and Mejia were not available last night? And neive has to be on vacation really (but then agian, he did pitch, didnt he?

Still, if Cora wasn’t a bonehead, Elmer may come out unscratched.

But, I will stick with my prediction from the other day. If they go 1-5 (well, now 1-4, so adds getting shorter) vs. the yankers and phils, the ax falls Friday before the quick 6 game road trip. That will give the team a few games to regroup under Melvin before facing the “faithful” again.

    1. metsfan4decades

Yes, Jerry said Mejia and Valdes were not available.
I didn’t have a problem with Dessens in there. After all, with the depleted pen, who else were you going to use in that inning? And Dessens might have been fine, if not for the error…

Wasn’t it Dessens Manuel did that to last year? brought him into a bases loaded situation and he walked a guy? Or was that someone else?

Manuel not learning from past mistakes is one of the reasons he should go.

      1. ceetar

        Casey Fossum.

        same difference.

brought him in fresh from Buffalo, bases loaded. Glad tos ee he learns..

ditto. I’m out of words for how down I am about the state of our franchise. I’m not as into the 2000 squad celebration for the lone reason that of late, every year they gotta think of some Met’s related squad to honor just to drum up ticket sales and imo distract from the current state of affairs. I didn’t think they had one this year, but they found one. Honoring a team that made it to the world series. This is what we’re reduced to. Next it will be honoring a team that won a wildcard. Which at this point, maybe I’ll take.

Well, it’s a beautiful day out so enjoy. My day will be finished off with a family gathering at an Ex-Met fan turned Yankee Fan, I’m not sure I’ll make it to midnight.

I will be the lone mets fans at a subway series party tonight – pray for me fellas lol

      1. Hazmet

You still got em out numbered. :)

        1. rustyjr

          Lol

      2. metsfan4decades

That’s O.K. Rusty. You’ll have the last laugh because we’re gonna win this one tonight.

    I wouldn’t even come close to comparing Cora’s throw with Castillo’s walk-off dropped pop-up.

Ugh, I expected the rotation to fall apart during the season, but I was never expecting the offense to be in a perpetual coma. These guys need a change in atmosphere, which means gutting management and getting some fresh voices in there.

On the bright side, Taka looked really solid. Here’s hoping he can slot into the rotation and be respectable for the rest of the season.

    Any word on Iggy?

    1. rustyjr

They want him to pitch 1 more game in buffalo

      1. darknova306

        Gotcha. Thanks.

  4. metsfan4decades

Doesn’t matter what kind of outing we get from Big Pelf tonight. Without the bats showing up, it’s all wasted.

When we pitch, we don’t hit. When we hit, we don’t pitch.

    Sigh….

    1. rustyjr

      Sigh indeed

    2. Hazmet

The classic sign of a bad team. On the plus side there’s till plenty of season left. On the downside there’s still plenty of season left. j/k

  5. Kingman 26

Time for the complete housecleaning the Nabobs demanded.

It is excruciating to follow this team.

Ownership and the front office have zero idea of what to do.

    The manager is beyond ridiculous.

Beltran is on a milk carton laughing.

    Maine? Ollie? Niese?

    Mejia and his climbing ERA?

Again, I was wrong and the Nabobs were right about 2010.

Omar and Jerry and the entire staff MUST go.

Send Mejia down and rush no one else.

Let Taka see if he is a starter.

Don’t even think about a midseason deal losing prospects.

    This year is over.

Try to trade anyone other than Wright and the youngsters and amass the game’s best prospect collection and save the dough for postseason free agents.

This is a team of overrated and injury-prone players which is in its fourth straight year of decline.

Jerry and his staff cannot motivate or prepare the team and enough is enough.

    1. rustyjr

There is still time – it’s just running out quicky

      1. Kingman 26

Reds, Cards, Dodgers, Giants, Padres, Braves, Phils, Nats, Marlins.

We will have to beat out SIX of the above teams.

This is a below average team Rusty….don’t you agree??

        1. njstuckintx

it should be, but based on lousy pitching, not the crap we’ve been getting out of the hitters. This is a better team than they’ve been showing. I’m happy with the production we’re seeing out of Pagan. It’s no beltran, but it’s still good stuff. It’s wright, reyes and bay, aka the craptastic 3, that need to pick up their stuff. Yeah, wright’s ops is good, but we demand more. I am still firmly in the boat that 2 pickups for pitching will help to right the ship. I’m sure I’m the minority, but doesn’t that mean you have to bow down to my wishes? (sorry, couldn’t help the sociological & political shot there). Last sentence aside, if the Mets are going to get a move on, it is going to have to be much sooner than the trade deadline. Can the ship be righted? I still believe so. It just has to be realllllll quick. Can the managerial staff just as they hit the West Coast, start the Oswalt courting. I read Sonnestine is available. Same with Myers. Are these all Lincecums? No, but they don’t grow on trees and are never available via trade.

While not having my head completely up my rear while singing “always look on the bright side of life”, I am not cashing my chips in yet. Basing the season on the emotions of the game to game is going to kill you.

      2. njstuckintx

Agreed. Act fast or not at all.

I will expand on what Tx. said, since I was planning to go to that neighborhood anyway.

And it is the reason that, unlike Kingman, I am still keeping the float on the road. And not just for the kiddie core.

1st, I still think they need to, and soon, clean out the manager and coaches. if for no other reason, than to essentially give the team a fresh start (a mulligan?), for the roughly 3/4 of the season left (aka the plenty of time left to make a move.)

So, there was 1 big question mark coming into the sason (MOP, although it was more so MO). And there has been 1 (2, if you count Jerry et. al., but 1 on the field) giant underacheive: most of the offense (Hot ROd excluded), and basically the core, middle of the order guys.

And since as we sit, MO are done and gone, and replaced by guys that so far (1 start) look better, the team is actually probably BETTER than when they started the season (not the usual result of losing 40% of your rotation).

And I really, truly believe that the big guys on offense will not continue to suck so bad all year. Even without Beltran, they should be able to get their collective shat together, and actually become an asset.

SO, being where they are right now is actually not too bad, considering all the suckitude they have lived through. And, the big and, they really should not be able to keep up this level of losing.

so, new manager and coaches + 120 games left = making a run for the playoffs.

I don’t care how bad they have looked, I still think they will ebound. Just don’t think Jerry will be able to lead it. From what I read about Melvin, he just might.

Start next Friday. Right after the Phils leave town. Although I would be perfectly fine with starting before they arrive!

    1. Kingman 26

Stick if you think we will win the division or have the best non-division- winner record bless you.

This team is going to have to do all of what you suggest and more to finish with over 80 wins.

      1. stickguy

If they “do all that and more” They wil lfinish with well over 80 wins. Heck, they could bumble along with jam master Jerry in cahrge, and just with some normal hot streaks, end up with more than 80.

    2. Kingman 26

And the float is beautiful….I am in StLouis on biz and drove the float here to get it out of the garage.

      Cards fans were VERY impressed.

    3. njstuckintx

Amen, and the pitching pick ups they’ll need to do will not be cheap. You have to pay to get. It’s unfortunate, but that’s how the cookie crumbles. The ball bounces. The beer fizzes?

How about fixing Citi field and moving some fences in and/or lowering them? Jason Bay, a guy who consistantly hits 25+ hr’s, who’s hit 30+ hr’s in 4 of his last 5 seasons, is crushing balls that are landing in the warning track. The one he hit off Mo was crushed. He and David Wright two guys who are known for their power, have a combined 2hr’s at citi field this season, and I don’t have to tell you what Wright did last year. Our hr leader last year hit 12!!! I understand the wind also factors, but the fences need to move in. Tell me all you want about how theres bigger gaps and hr’s aren’t everything and blah blah blah, but this stadium has single-handedly ruined the face of our franchise who once looked like he was going to be a top 10 player, it has ruined at least so far (and lets face it we’re already 7 games out, so it has mattered alot) Bay.

    1. njstuckintx

The mets hit more home runs at home than on the road last year, if i’m not mistaken.

      1. whataputz

Okay…they still need to fix citi. David Wright still has been killed by the stadium, and Bay has been shaken up clearly, I realize he has no hr’s on the road, but cmon, this stadium clearly screws their games up. Crushed balls at Citi are still winding up int he warning track. Bay shoulda hit two hr’s yesterday, and hit 1 double and 1 fly out, he crushed both balls. He’s a power hitting, consistent 30 hr hitter, and he’s crushing balls that are winding up in the middle of the warning track. Wright has 7 hr’s in 19 road games, which is a phenomenal pace, yet outside of the first inning of the first game of the year he doesn’t have a single citi field hr. We’re talking about a two guys that have a combined 9 25+ hr seasons in relatively short careers, who have a combine 2 hr’s in citi field at the end of may. C’mon you cannot tell me this ballpark has screwed our team.

    2. ceetar

Citi Field is not the problem, and Bay’s hit was not a homer in any respectable major league park. It actually carried pretty well, I thought they were going to track it down for a while.
