Parnell seems to be showing some life. I wonder how the effort to teach him a plus 2nd pitch is going? If that pans out, him, Lejan, Acosta (hey, he wasn’t that bad) and even everts give them a decent group of arms to ull up once Jerry finishes trashing the ones he has (including Mejia).

You left out Daniel Murphy 5/5 with a 2B and 3RBI

    1. stickguy

it was in there. Must have been looking at the wrong team!

the non-link screwed me up. heh. I blame not getting back from the game until after midnight and then finishing up a photo project and only getting 5.5 hours of sleep. :P

      Go Murph!

AdamRubinESPN International League names Bisons OF JESUS FELICIANO the League’s Batter of the Week for May 17-23. Feliciano had five multi-hit games.

and we are continued to be subjected to GM jr.

      1. ceetar

        Yankees OF depth looks suspect..hmm..

(They’re getting Grandersuck back shortly though, so maybe not)

    What might Roy Oswalt cost?

    1. metro

They most certainly are going to want guys like Mejia and Flores. What they can get is anybodies guess but he won’t be cheap.

    2. DNDJohan aka kistics

I would make anybody available except for Mejia.

    3. njstuckintx

They need infielder and pitchers. Murphy, Tejada, Holt and Fmart? I know fmart isn’t an infielder, but they don’t have much for back up OF either and they may consider flipping Pence, as he’s coming into those ARB years.

    4. tkfj2

      DO NOT WANT!

The last thing this team and organization needs is another injury prone/headcase pitcher(Oswalt isnt a head case, but I felt like including Ollie) on the wrong side of 30 yrs old. Mejia and Flores, or any other top prospect would be a drastic overpayment. None the less Oswalt says he wants to go to contender, as in the “Nats”. Yeah, ok Roy the Nats are contenders…..talk to me in a couple weeks.

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

What do you think about going after Lee?

        1. metsfan4decades

I’d rather have Lee than Oswalt.
But not sure I’d want Lee either as a 1/2 season rental.
Both these guys are approaching mid 30s so not sure I’d want an extension either unless it was 2 years – maybe 3 if $$ was reasonable.

        2. DNDJohan aka kistics

My point was that Lee is only 1 year younger than Oswalt and 1 year older than Johan.

So Oswalt is not old and is not injury prone. Yes he missed some time last season, but outside of that, he’s been very consistent.

    5. GravediggerHebner

No idea but one thing I heard this morning I found very interesting.

Trade for Oswalt and your ties with him end after 2011 if you choose to buy him out, after 2012 if you pick up his $16 mil option. The contract already exists so you know how long you have him and how much you’re paying him, it’s just a matter of what players to trade.

Trade for Lee and you get him for half this season then he declares for free agency and you have to bid for him; or you overwhelm him with a big contract and you’re tied to him through at least 2015. So you’re giving up players plus either losing him after half a year or paying top dollar for a long time.

      1. njstuckintx

I would think if Oswalt agrees to go to NY, they’d negotiate to make his option year guaranteed.

I actually prefer Oswalt to Lee based on past performance, similar ages and length of contracts/$.

        1. GravediggerHebner

I was leaning to preferring Lee based on his success in an overbearing north east market and the post season, but I definitely prefer the built knowledge that you’re only committing to Oswalt through 2012.

Given the very long contracts quality pitchers mostly get, and given how often they miss parts of those contracts due to injury, I am becoming more enamored of the shorter term of Oswalt. I just don’t see Lee agreeing to a Halladay-like 3 year deal. If he would he becomes more interesting to me again.

Either guy would be a very solid addition to this pitching staff.

          1. njstuckintx

Oh, agreed on either being welcome additions. I can’t see Lee not whoring himself out to the highest bidder. The Met’s won’t have a whole lot of flexibility until 2012 (minus beltran, ollie, castillo, etc.). Granted they’d have to take on $ to get Oswalt, but I think it won’t be as much as Lee.

And both have had injury issues with their backs, if I’m not mistaken.

          2. oleosmirf

If it is Murphy, Tejada and Familia do you make the trade?

          3. njstuckintx

I prob. would. I would hate to see Familia go, and would prefer to hold onto tejada, but you have to give to get.

          4. GravediggerHebner

            Short answer, yes.

          5. trs86

Very good package. Similar to what I have below.

          6. wannybackstra

no one wants to see the package you have below. ;-0

          7. metsfan4decades

Knowing this now, if we were thinking about either one, then Oswalt is probably the better deal.

My heartache with either one though is what prospects we’d have to give up + the amount of years. 2012 is only 2 1/2 years…..

          8. DNDJohan aka kistics

My point exactly. Lee might be a marginally better pitcher, but given that he will demand 4-5 year contract with 18M per, Oswalt would be better with shorter and less expensive contract.

Plus, I think if the Mets play the cards right, cost to get Oswalt could be relatively low for couple reasons.

            1) There are no “contending” team that need/can afford him. I see Twins, Rangers, Dodgers, and Angels as the “true contending” team right now. Rangers and Dodgers have money problems now. Twins probably won’t be able to afford his contract.
            2) MLBTR brings up a good point in that Lee could be available for the “cost-conscious” teams like Twins if he’s available. Also there are many alternative choices such as Myers, Millwood, Webb(?) for less expensive, yet can help the team out for those teams as well.

    6. trs86

I think everyone is overstating his worth. On an open market maybe quite a bit. However, Oswalt has a no-trade clause so that eliminates a lot of teams from the competition. He has a high salary and yet is only signed for 1.5 years. That also will eliminate a lot of teams from the competition. Then you have to factor in needs of the contenders. If it was the beginning of the season and he cost 5M for 1 year it would be stiff but due to the circumstances above they will be lucky to get anything more than 1 top 10 prospect and some filler with promise.
Example Mets: Florez, Holt and Murphy. Top 10 prospect, gambling pitcher and major league ready player.

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

I would assume the cost is probably similar to what the Phillies gave up for Lee last season.

        1. njstuckintx

Or what the White Sox gave for Peavy.

        2. trs86

Not sure. Lee did not have injury issues AND an exorbitant salary AND big trade demands.

          1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Looking back at what the Phillies gave up, they gave up 4 prospects. 2 of them of which were in top 100 prospect list (40s and 90s). Plus Phillies got back Ben Fransisco as well.

I definitely think Flores, Murphy, Holt/Gee will get it done.

Like I said before, I’d make everyone available except for Mejia.

      2. stickguy

I would be shocked if the Mets traded Flores right now for a 32YO pitcher with a giant red injury flag on his back. This guy is a timebomb.

Is it even true that he has to get a shot in his back before starts to get through it?

Having experience with bad backs, I am staying far away from someone that suffers from the problem and is trying to avoid needed surgery.

        1. trs86

Who knows if it’s true or not?

        2. njstuckintx

wasn’t that why Lee was on the DL to start?

        3. DNDJohan aka kistics

I disagree. Flores hasn’t proved anything anywhere. He’s a raw talent. To get back a proven veteran pitcher who can help to win is a gamble you take.

  5. oleosmirf

I still think it would be a mistake to trade for a top pitcher right now. I would see where the team stands July 1st and see if we are just 1 SP away from competing b/c right now there are still too many question marks

  6. GravediggerHebner

More related to the post, the replace GMJ movement is losing a bit of steam for me.

    1. ceetar

yeah, he’s not doing that badly the last couple. really only 4 pinch hits the last 7 days? felt like more. Still, he’s providing very little, especially compared to say, Jesus Feliciano.

      1. GravediggerHebner

On most any day, but especially a day after taking 2 of 3 from the Yankees, I just can’t get excited about the thought of cutting GMJ to make room for a career AAA player who turns 31 early next month. It’s such a lateral move at best IMO that it’s not worth the time and effort of the organization to even execute it.

        1. ceetar

well, It probably is mostly lateral, but there is some ‘ride the hot hand’ness to it. Jesus gives us a week, then why not really?

    2. metsfan4decades

Mets seem really stuck on proven CF defense at the ML level, which is the sole reason I think GMJ is still here.

    3. njstuckintx

Just wish, like we all do i’m sure, that there was a little more pop in those hits.

5 for 13 with 6 strike outs… Keep him away from Wright! Or vice versa. :/

      1. trs86

If I am reading what you are saying correctly, it does not work that way. The last 7 days are included in the totals of his last 14.

        1. njstuckintx

          So he’s 4 for 9 with 4 strikeouts over 14 days?

          1. trs86

            4/11 (12 Plate Appearances)
            4 K’s in 12 PA.

    4. stickguy

real small sample size. ANd it isn’t like any of those hits were really roped.

      1. trs86

Hits are hits and in reality he has bought himself more time with them.

  7. oleosmirf

I wouldnt make any major trades until Reyes, Wright and Bay play at a high level for stretches.

  8. stickguy

Maine diaqgnosed with shoulder tendonitis. Guess he really was hurt!

But, who knows if some rest and rehab will get him back to acceptable. Hope so, since it would benice to get something out of him before they cut him loose this off season.

Of course, he will then get picked up by the carda, and turn into the next Carpenter!
