Post Game: Blanking Those Blankers

Coming into tonight’s game the New York Mets were 20-7 when scoring first, 16-4 when Jose Reyes scores and perhaps least surprising they were 6-0 when holding their opponent scoreless.  Mets starter Mike Pelfrey (7-1) was a bit wild, walking 5, but he held the Philadelphia Phillies scoreless on 3 hits over 7 innings.  Pedro Feliciano tossed a scoreless 8th and closer Francisco Rodriguez picked up the save (9) with a 1-2-3 9th inning to complete the third consecutive blanking of the division rival Phillies as the Mets swept the series with a 3-0 victory at Citi Field.  This is the first time the Mets have shut out an opponent in a 3-game series at home since they did it to these same Phillies in 1969, a great year for the Mets.  The triumvirate of scoring first, Reyes scoring, and holding the opponent scoreless is proving to be a very successful formula for the 2010 Mets.

The Mets scored first in the bottom of the 1st and it was Reyes who did the scoring.  He led off with a single, moved to second on a Luis Castillo ground out and scored on a double to deep left by Jason Bay.

The game remained 1-0 Mets until the bottom of the 7th.  Jeff Francoeur led off with a single but was forced out on a fielder’s choice grounder hit by Henry Blanco.  Fernando Tatis then pinch-hit for Pelfrey and reached on an error by Phillies 3rd baseman Placido Polanco.  A Reyes double to left plated both for the eventual winning score of 3-0.  The Mets are now 20-9 at home.

      LOL – good one.

      The Big Goose Egg!

A sweep with 3 shutouts – against the Phillies. It just doesn’t get any better than that.

If those are Phillies fans I think you mean there are ZERO car fires!

      1. njstuckintx

Was meaning they were prob. setting fires to Met fan cars. They are a higher class of fan, don’t you know. ;)

Nominated for “Worst Timing Ever” award is Bob Klapisch’s article that just hit sportspyder suggesting “the Mets don’t know who’s in charge.” Maybe not but the Phillies know who.

Jeeze. Sounds like a guy who just wanted to make sure everyone clicked on his story tonight…

        I like this story better….

        Mets beast of NL East?

‘I believe this Mets team is a lot better than anyone may have thought, especially when they were losing nine of 11 games in mid-May. It was during that period when Jose Reyes and Jason Bay were groping to find their way.’

‘The Phillies suddenly don’t look like the team to beat in NL East.’

With more than 4 months to go I won’t get too carried away. I am enjoying these last few days very much though.

Yes – agreed. Lots of baseball left to play.
If there is one thing a Met fan has learned – painfully – over the past few years, is to not count any chickens until they’re hatched.

          2. GravediggerHebner

            I second that.

But feel free to count your geese!

Blah blah let’s not get carried away bla hblah..

    suck it Philly.

There is a lot that can be taken from this series, even if it’s only May.

    A. The Mets can feel they’re at least as good as the Phillies. Confidence is import.

    B. You can’t dismiss the Mets in the division. They’re as capable as anyone.

    C. Philly is not good enough to win 93+ games, because offenses slump, and their pitching is very suspect. So no running away with anything.

    D. Other teams have to bolstered in knowing that the Phillies are very beatable. The Mets destroyed any illusion or facade the Phillies have up, and now all the teams can see their cracks.

I would not say the Phillies are not “good” enough to win 93 games. I think that is certainly a possibility for them as they have a history of very good 2nd halves. It does show that they are a flawed team just like everyone else. What it also shows is that the Mets can compete with them and the idea of give up now the season is lost, why bring in anyone on a sinking ship is ridiculous.

Re-establishing themselves as “in the thick of it”, especially in the logjam that is the NL east should help to 1. Tell Minaya that he should be buying all the way for a SP, 2. Tell Oswalt and other no trade clause guys that this team is going to be in it & 3. will most likely have Jerry here all year long. Regardless of our desire for him to go or stay, I can’t see him going unless the wheels fall off.
