Did Milwake Smell What The Mets Were Cookin...please dont sue me ;)

The Mets ripped Milwake for 10 runs in a win Sunday Night 10-4. The win avoided a sweep by the hands of Milwake and also marked their 7th win on the road. Jose Reyes got the party started with a lead off double off Randy Wolf. Randy then walked Luis Castillo and Jason Bay to load the bases with 0 out. Fernando Tatis in for Ike Davis(another case of Jerry “rewarding” his players when the kid hit a 3 run bomb yesterday to bring the Mets closer to a comeback) struck out but David Wright salvaged the inning by hitting a sac fly that brought in Jose Reyes. Angel Pagan would fly out to center to end the threat.

The Mets surprise starter this season had his first rough start to a game, giving up a home run to Ricky Weeks to tie up the game 1-1. R.A. Dickey would retire the side to keep the game tied. In the bottom of the 2nd, Carlos Gomez singled to start off the inning. However, Carlos didnt get the memo that Henry Blanco was behind the plate and got thrown out on a steal attempt at 2nd. Jonathan Lucroy singled and Randy Wolf bunted him over to put him in scoring position. Alciedes Escobar singled to center to score Lucroy and put Milwake up 2-1. Dickey got Ricky Weeks to fly out to center to end the inning.

bases_loaded_image_jls9e790zrzfq0yThe Mets would load the bases yet again in the 3rd inning. Jason Bay walked after Luis Castillo grounded out. Fernando Tatis was next to draw a walk and Randy Wolf was visibly fustrated with the rookie catcher. They didnt get on the same page with the next batter however as David Wright drew a walk to load the bases with 1 out. Angel Pagan hit a liner right up the middle that found Randy Wolfs glove and he turned a double play to end the inning.

Jeff Francoeur singled to open the 4th inning and then proceeded to steal 2nd base. Jeff had a meeting with Jerry Manuel to discuss his struggles and it seems as if Jeff was just burdened by too much advice. Henry Blanco would fly out to deep center and allow Jeff Francoeur to tag up and move to third. With the infield drawn in, Dicky would go right through the middle(insert immature giggle here) to score(insert yet another immature giggle) Jeff Francoeur and tie the game 2-2. Jose Reyes would hit a similar liner that Angel Pagan hit earlier and have the same result, the ball found Randy Wolf‘s glove and he turned a double play to end the inning.

Jeff Suppan would relieve Randy Wolf in the 6th. Angel Pagan would not reach on a drag bunt attempt for the first out but Jeff Francoeur singled for his second hit of the game. Henry Blanco singled also to center to put runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out. R.A. Dickey bunted over Jeff and Henry for the 2nd out. Suppan would intentionally walk Jose Reyes to pitch to Luis Castillo. Castillo did not appreciate that as he would single up the middle to score Francoeur and Blanco, putting the Mets up 4-2. Jason Bay would strike out to end the inning. In the 7th inning, Jeff got Ike Davis to strike out but would give up a double to David Wright. Angel Pagan hit a 2 run shot to put the Mets up 6-2 and Jeff Francoeur would hit a ground rule double. After a Henry Blanco walk and another successful sacrifice bunt by R.A. Dickey to move both guys into scoring position again, Suppan was subbed out for Marco Estrada who got Jose Reyes to strike out.

R.A. Dickey got Lucroy to fly out to center for the first out in the 7th inning. Joe Inglett would pinch hit for Marco Estrada and get a pinch hit. Dickey got Escobar to fly out for the second out. Just when Dickey looked like he would get out of the inning, Ricky Weeks would strike again, this time for a 2 run shot of his own to put Milwaukee down 2 runs. Dickey got Ryan Braun to ground out to end the inning. Trevor Hoffman came in for the Brew Crew and retired the side in the 7th. Pedro Feliciano came in and walked Prince Fielder to start the 8th inning. Jerry Manuel yanked Pedro and put in Elmer Dessens who got Casey McGehee to ground into a double play. Dessens got Cory Hart to fly out to end the threat and keep the Mets up 6-4.

floodgates1

Zach Braddock would relieve Trevor in the 9th, which opened the flood gates of offense. David Wright singled to start the inning, followed by an Angel Pagan double. Jeff Francoeur would double also to score David Wright and Angel Pagan. Henry Blanco did not want to be out done and also doubled to score Jeff Francoeur. Gary Matthews pinch hit for Elmer Dessens and was walked by Zach(how you walk Gmj is beyond me). It would come back to haunt him as Jose Reyes singled to score Henry Blanco and put the Mets up 10-4. Zach would eventually remember he is a Major League pitcher and retire the next three Mets to end the game. Francisco Rodriguez would have a 1-2-3 inning to finish the game off and avoid the sweep.

Very nice post game wrap up. Keeping up the Grave tradition, dirty….

Great game – just what the doctor ordered.

I’m going to revise my opinion of Dickey here somewhat. I previously thought he would not be a long term solution for the 5th spot. Now….I’m not so sure.

I was very impressed with his early inning adjustment when he realized the knuckle ball wasn’t working. He’s got a very decent fastball for a knuckler and it got him through those early innings. I was even more impressed with his post game interview. He said this is his 5th season now throwing that knuckle ball. Said in the early years, if he didn’t have the feel for it, he would abandon it early on and try and get through with mostly fastballs. Now, with experience, he says he lays off but throws just enough with like a 3-1 count and such to keep them guessing – until he can get the feel for it back.

He kept us in the game, he gave us some innings when the BP is a couple of arms short. In short, he battled his way through doing just want you want to see a ML pitcher do when he doesn’t have his best stuff. He said his goal is to pitch 180-200 innings and show the Mets he can help this team out this year. He’s hoping each subsequent start will gain him the confidence from them to do just that.

Might just be that 5th starter we so need right now.

Yeah, this was a strange but very positive game for the Dickey.

Seriously though, over Maine and Perez? I would take Anthony Young, anyone from the 1962 staff, or Rudy Stein right now.

      MUST keep moving forward.

      1. metsfan4decades

Well, I did say right now. As in we don’t have Maine or Perez, who knows what we’ll get from Maine when he returns and let’s not even go there with Perez.

        And yeah, Tatis batting clean-up????

They said on the post game show the FO has officially asked Ollie to go down to the minors to work on his mechanics. Ollie refused.

Interview with Jerry (I believe it was done before the game), asked him in light of that, what does he do now with getting Ollie into a game? Jerry said it’s going to be very difficult. Mainly low game changing type situation, extra innings, spots like that.

Doesn’t sound like the Mets have any intention of trying to ‘fix’ Ollie as long as he remains on the 25 man roster. Which means we basically play with one arm short in the BP.

Bobby O commented on the post game that come next Saturday – which is Niese’s expected return – they’re going to have to make a roster move. The logical choice is Ollie and it will be interesting to see what they do.

I wonder if there would be some way to trade Ollie for Willis? I know the Tigers have DFAed him. They have 10 days to trade him or release him.
He’s owed about 8M left and Ollie has about 20M left on his. Could the Mets maybe eat 8M and take on Willis’s 8? That would leave the Tigers getting 2 years of Ollie for 4M and total we would save 4M. Is my math right? Would the Tigers do that?

      1. njstuckintx

If you can save 4 mil, you do it in a heart beat. At this point if you can save 500K, you keep 100K more than if you just DFA him.

Sucking and trying to fix it is not wonderful, but acceptable. Sucking and refusing to sort your crap out? That’s grounds for getting beat with a sock full of nickels.

Another trade idea. Kazmir has been bad again and is owed about what Perez is. I wonder if a Perez, Murphy and cash could be worked out for Kazmir?

    1. njstuckintx

I’d do that in a heartbeat. Perez, Murphy, someone else & cash. I’m not saying a Mejia type, but something to get that done. It won’t happen, but it’d be nice.

    2. metsfan4decades

We were discussing both the Willis and Kaz idea in the Dugout. Some would rather have Willis than Perez. I don’t know that I would.

Now Kamir is a different story. Angels obviously need a 1st baseman now as they don’t appear to have any minor league talent ready enough to take the position for the rest of the year. I just can’t see the Angels taking on the Perez headache when they basically gave us GMJ to get rid of him…..

      1. njstuckintx

Well, Silva & Bradley changed hands. GMJ changed hands. Anything is possible. Probable? no. Possible? yes.

    3. gategem

Perhaps if the Mets threaten to trade Ollie to Arizona he might accept a minor league assignment. lol

        I don’t get it…

        1. njstuckintx

Would Ollie even be allowed in Arizona? He could potentially be profiled.
