    What is wrong with Wright?

wait, you want to open that can of worms again? !!!

Lots of opinions on why, but basically, he is a complete mess, with numbers that are plummeting to career lows, and he is striking out at pretty much a ML record pace.

My favorites of the bandied about reasons are:

      1) he needs his eyes checked again. Maybe he needs glasses, but won’t do it?

      2) the beaning still has him with the yips, so he is losing that split second or reaction time, flinching until he decides it isn’t an inside pitch?

      3) He conciously has developed a longer, loopier swing, and has abandoned driving the ball up the gaps, and anything passing for situational hitting, and is sold out entirely (as a guess hitter) trying to jack more HRs.

      4) related to #3, he was so embarrassed last year about his HR output, that he refuses to let it happen again, other output be damned. Hey, this is the guy that abondoned the protective helmet after the first Gazoo coments!

      5) he actually decided to listen to Hojo, and has now actually become Hojo!

      6) he cares a lot, and presses bad in late game key spots.

      7) he needs to get laid (note, some people actually said this seriously).

IMO, #3 is a huge part of the reason, and there is still a measure of #2 on top. and that is a bad thing to have, on top of a long swing and a guess hitters approach.

I wasn’t really looking for an explanation but thats my fault I should of known better. :-)

Clearly at this point no one has a clue what is wrong with him. The question now is will he ever get it back together again or is Wright doomed to have a terrible season?

        I’d go with #5 & #6.

As for 7, i’ve seen his girl. It can’t be that. I mean, her job is to look smoking hot (check!) and take care of her meal ticket (i would assume check). If not, Dave could have his choice, I’m sure. I mean, if Shawn Kemp can practically populate a small country with his offspring, I’ve no doubt Dave wouldn’t have to put too much effort into getting himself to feel more relaxed.

Here’s my theory. Bear with me.

I think Citi Field ruined him. Early last season, he probably hit whole bunch of long fly outs that could have been a HR at Shea. At first he probably thought no big deal, I’ll hit for average, but still get 25HRs. But then his HR numbers stopped at while the team is going down with injuries. So he started to press and racks up strike outs. And the comes the tinkering and gets screwed up mentally.

So come this offseason, he’s going to learn to pull the ball little more which made his swing even longer. And now he’s become like Dunn/Reynolds/Howard type of hitter except that Wright probably won’t hit 40+ HRs, but more like 25-30 with similar BA and Ks.

But then it looks like Wright has struck out a lot from the beginning last season. So… my theory is all BS.

I’m no expert on analyzing players approach at the plate and swings.
From all I’ve listened to, example Keith and others, they’re saying he’s got a longer swing now, not to mention other nuances they’ve noticed.

My eyes see Wright flinching, turning away from the mound quick like towards the ump, when a ball is coming in high and inside.

So is it a combo of the beaning he’s unconsciously compensating for and the different approach he tried last year to get more power to hit HRs?

Either way, both are a problem and with a 1/4 of the season gone and no improvement in site, the least I would do is get a new batting coach in here. HoJo must go.

On another note, read Frenchy’s interview where he’s blatantly ignoring all batting advice except HoJo’s and Jerry now. Said it’s been too much information from too many people and he’s over thinking everything now at the plate. Again…I’m going back to HoJo. If he was succeeding at all with these batters, there would be no reason for the hitters to be listening to advice from a dozen other people. That just tells you whatever HoJo is working on with them, well..it’s not working….

Reading the post on the Morales injury yesterday. I’m sure that’s the last of the home plate ‘we’ll all jump on you’ celebrations we’ll be seeing for a good long while.

Angels don’t appear to have much of a replacement. No one close to ready in the minors. Wonder if they’d be in the market for a trade that involved Murphy? I don’t even know what they might have available or be willing to part with. I was thinking pitching….
