2B, yes I said 2B, Reese Havens has been on fire since his promotion to AA. In 7 games he has a line of .345 BA, .406 OBP, .586 SLG, .992 OPS
Considering Castillo’s injury and lack of production, Cora’s role as a backup and Tejada’s small bat, how long will it be before Havens is standing beside Davis forming an all home grown in-field for the Mets? I think he is ready for that call up now. Send Castillo to the DL and give Havens a couple of weeks to prove his worth. Slide him into the 7 spot and see what happens.
Reyes, Pagan, Bay, Davis, Wright, Barajas, Havens, Frenchy is a very potent lineup in my opinion.  Let me hear it: I predict 2/5 first comments will be he’s not ready…

Biggest problem is he has so little experience at 2b (20 career games)

Yeah true but to me that is not an issue because our current crop of 2B are not great fielders anyway.

noone will trade for Castillo unless we send lots of cash so Castillo is not going anwhere.
Would be nice to see if he could stay healthy first…if he’s on fire still when rosters expand, I would definately call him up…

Does not have to go anywhere. If Havens comes up for those 2 weeks and shows he is ready then the Mets just might eat the cash and dump him.

the Wilpons will not eat the cash for GMJ which is what 1 mil?, let alone Ollie and Castillo too

Oleo it has nothing to do with eating the cash that is already owed to them. It has everything to do with having a guy they think can step in and give similar production at the right time. The Mets like it or not still value GMJR over calling up Pridie to ride the pine or career minor leaguer Feliciano. It has nothing to do with the cash.
As for if the Mets would eat the cash with Castillo? Not sure. Depends on what Havens looked like, Castillo’s health, and if a team was willing to trade for him paying a little bit of the cash.

see I dont believe that they value GMJ more. He is batting under .200 and it is June. Its all about money…
I certainly dont buy the whole CF thing either as GMJ played what 3 games in CF in May…

How is it about money Oleo. This argument makes no sense. They already owe him the money here or not. Again, why replace an experienced 5th OF that gets 3 AB’s a week with a career minor leaguer?
This is how little GMJR matters.
His last 28 days his line is: .316 .350 .368 .718

GMJ now has one RBI in 64 PA. Charting his lack of productivity might be fun!
Not to mention the absolute idiocy of him taking that extra base last night down by a lot of runs, even if he DID make it.

.316 .350 .368 .718 last 28 days. He’s terrible but the least of our problems and proves nothing about the Mets eating cash to cut someone.

True he certainly has not came through in the big spots. Although he only has 20 AB’s with runners in scoring position. His BA as a sub is a little better at 6/25.

His health is obviously a concern as well. Since drafting him he has had an elbow issue, a back issue, an oblique issue and another undisclosed muscle issue.

Well of course the comments on a player with 624 minor league PA with 20-something of them above A ball are going to be that he is not ready.
This team is going nowhere, and we are far from certain that rushing Mejia is not damaging him.
Why on earth bring up a guy with 20 PA above A ball?

Why not? It’s not like this kid is 18 years old. As to your comments on this team is going no where, thanks for sharing. I guess the float has a flat tire again after 4 games.

Why on Earth risk rushing another excellent prospect?
The Float is fine; but we need to win the next two, don’t we?
Have we won one road series this year?
I have watched almost every inning the last week, but we simply are not going to be better than a .500 team if we cannot win a single series on the road.

6/1/2010-11:42am at 11:42 am (UTC -4)
we knew we were a .500 team going into the year so its not a suprise. I do think we should see Tejada first before we go to Havens.
Unless of course they wanna keep Tejada in AAA to keep his trade value up as he really has no future unless Havens flames out. Murphy and Tejada surely are going to be packaged in a trade you would think

I think Tejada is more of a SS replacement than 2B. The days of a slick fielding no power 2B are waning.

well if the Mets dont see him as an MLB 2B then he should be packaged in a trade.
a package of Tejada, Murphy and Familia could get us Lee

Can’t do that yet. It’s not like Reyes is locked up longterm.

I have zero interest in mortgaging more of the extraordinarily bright future for the remote possibility of making the postseason this year.
Mejia is basically completely wasting a year. Completely. What has him being here accomplished? For him OR the team? Nothing. Having him start in the minors the last 6 weeks might have him ready for the rotation now. Instead he gets to pitch in games which are already lost.
Davis played some in AA, got a taste of AAA, and then came up and has been pretty good.
I say let Havens have at least a month in AA; maybe two months.

6/1/2010-11:39am at 11:39 am (UTC -4)
I could agree with that. I guess the thing is that why did Davis come up, was it because they viewed he was ready or because Murphy got injured? I see the same scenario with Castillo.

6/1/2010-11:47am at 11:47 am (UTC -4)
Yes sir; Davis played more at AA and some at AAA, his personal pedigree may make him a bit more MLB-ready, and I also think the desperate need for offense at 1B (and OBP and decent fielding) all combined to make Ike ready when he was.

6/1/2010-11:49am at 11:49 am (UTC -4)
I just think there is a lot more to a player being ready than his minor league AB’s. He’s a college kid and again it’s for 2 weeks to take a look see. If he comes out like Ike then you make an adjustment. If he does not then it’s not going to hurt his confidence or development.

The kid has played all of 7 games in AA and has shown to be injury prone. Can the kid at least play for a month in AA? Really Havens?
It must be a slow day indeed.

After being a last night circus I’m for bringing up any body at 2nd base cora is the absoulute worst fielder I was shocked at the lack of range he has. Man if this met team wants to right the ship this year they got to start chopping heads Matthews,Perez,Cora,Manuel gotta go and now.

Switching subjects a little.
It appears that Dillon Gee is back on track in AAA.
He has had a quality start for 3 starts in a row and 4/6, 6/10.

Also throwing this out there. Misch has had another great AAA campaign and is just better than people give him credit for. He his last 3 games he has pitched 22 innings giving up just 3 runs, 12 hits, 2 walks, while striking out 14.

Misch has looked good. hard to tell though if he is more than a LH Figgy.
I do think they need to make some adjustments to the pitching staff. Obviously address the ollie issue, and then figure out who is healthy, and what roles they shold be in.
Jerry, of course, is incapable of handling this, so don’t expect it to go well.

Havens? not yet. But yes, he has always raked when he can stay on the field. And from what I read, they are confident that his D will translate well to 2B (being a SS is a good start), and the reports so far are that he looks good.
I think that a couple more months, if he keeps hitting well, and doesn’t get hurt again, and he will be ready for a call up.
And I really think he can win the job next ST. I don’t expect to see Castillo on the field in 2011 for the Mets.
If Slappy or cora went down now, probably Tejada gets the call. A month or 2 from now? Who knows.
But if havens comes up, it should be to start.
