Highlights From Mike Francesa’s “Jerry Manuel Report” Today

Jerry Manuel during his weekly Jerry Manuel Report on Mike Francesa show said when asked where they stand with Oliver Perez “We still encouraging Ollie to see the big picture that his opportunity here is going to be very limited.”

Jerry also when asked if Ollie is affecting the team said “its a situation where a young man is not gonna get the reps” and added Ollie is not affecting the clubhouse when asked if it was causing problems in the clubhouse.

Jerry added that right now his 8th inning guys are Feliciano and Dessens and that Niese is scheduled to start this Saturday vs Marlins.

Jerry said he will give Castillo today and tomorrow and see where he is on Friday and decide what they will do. He added that Murphy looked good at 2nd from the reports he had. Leaving the door open that maybe Murphy may find himself playing at 2nd with the big club.

DL castillo, and start Murphy at 2B Friday!

Not that it is neccesarily a good idea (even though I still want Castillo gone for good), but there is s guy over at FWICG (Sylow, Ceetar I am sure “knows” him) that will blow an anuryism if it happens. He is so annoying, it wil lbe worth it just for that!

Certainly makes the line up much more interesting if you can take out the dead wood bat they keep running out at 2B.

saw a piece over on Toby’s minors blog that many of the experts are nailing down the Mets pick as zach cox.

Yuck. Not that I know anything about these guys other than what I read at these sites, but it seems like a real weak pick.

You know it is iffy when some posts that his profile sounds like ” a better known and more expensive Daniel Murphy”

3B w/o power of defensive skills? Don’t they already have a few of those floating around in the system?

    1. wannybackstra

Cox also plays 2B and has average power.

  3. Kingman 26

Have always loved the idea of Murph at second.

    1. stickguy

at least at 2nd, if he can field the position at least adequately, his bat is actaully above average. Not so at 1B, or even in the OF.

I actually have a feeling he will do OK. After seeing him at first, he does seem to have pretty good reactions, and surprisingly good range.

It will be interesting to see his “footwork”, since I here that is important over there!

in some ways, 2B is the easiest of the 3 IF spots to play (not counting 1B, which IMO is it’s own thang). You get to play deep, and have the most time to react, and don’t usually have long throws. Plus baserunners are in front of you.

The nuances of turning the DP are of course trickier, but who knows how quickly anyone picks that up.

Plenty of guys get thrown into the fire and do fine (Valentin, say). And Murphy seemed to have a nice glove at 1B.

I know he has a lot of “haters” that swear he can’t possibly ever play 2B (usually because he had some problems in LF at citi, or a poor FA at 3B in the minors), without seeing him actually play it.

Although many of the same “fans” swore last year that pelf was a bust and would never do anything, so what the hell do they know!

      1. Kingman 26

Holy crap, do I agree with EVERY word of this!

Damn, I have the right Float Co-Pilot.

        1. fongy2

          Sorry!…Loveya
          both BUT Murph
as a 2B is a recipe for the
          making of a bad team!
2B is still a DEFENSE 1st position AND this kid is a below average 1Bman & a very well below average 3Bman and LFer.
          THAT hasn’t changed w/a few
gms @ a new position in the
          minors.
Out side of Ollie,Castillo is my most disliked Met
AND has lost ALOT of skill
          due to injuries
          and age.
          Mes think he is
ordinary now on his best days
at 2B AND I’ve been wanting
          to upgrade there
since he became a FA. I know Cora is a 24th/25th player/back-up infielder BUT
to my eye we’re a better team
with him @2B now than even Castillo, let alone Murph.

          1. stickguy

OK, so I will put you in teh “murphy is the anti-christ” column. You have plenty of company.

But, I disagree that he was below average at 1B. he actually had lot’s of range and seemed to have a fine glove. If anything, it was just the instincts (using too much range?) that got him in trouble. But overall, he did surprisingly OK>

And LF, kind of different than 2B, especially since he was always an infielder. He didn’t look nearly as bad at shea as he did at citi, but moving from IF to OF doesn’t always go well.

#B? Iknow his FA was low (IOW, too many errors) in the minors, but have no idea if it was a bad glove, or mostly throws. But again, 3B has a different skill set than 2B>

so frankly, the only way to “know” what Murphy will do at 2B is to let him play. At least they are doing it at AAA, and it sounds like he stays in AAA until he proves that he can do it.

COra doesn’t seem to have any range left, so he sure ain’t giving you much.

          2. fongy2

            RELAX!
I was one of the few sayin’”Let the kid have 1B”all winter and spring.
Its not my fault Ike moved quickly,Murph got hurt and now becomes Wally Pipp!
Actually I think its more like the Wiggington/Wright situation a few yrs ago.
When he’s ready, call the kid up and give him some ABs off the bench, but really in the end I think he becomes trade bait as part of a package to bring in a Millwood or Westbrook.

          3. fongy2

True w/Cora BUT he knows what he’s doing out there as opposed to a kid who in his mid 20s is learning a new position.

        2. stickguy

just hope that he turns out like another MiL LH hitting 3B w/o prototypical power, that got moved to 2B, even though his D was, to be kind, craptastic at first.

Guy turned out OK. Chase Utley. maybe you heard of him?

          1. fongy2

            Heard of him.
            Let’s calm down!
Murph was never the prospect Utley was,nor
was Utley ever even close to
            as bad a fielder
            as Murph.
            But nice thought.

          2. stickguy

no, murphy was not a 1st round pick. And I can’t interpret all the myriad filding stats, I am just working from memory that when he switched to 2B in the majors it wasn’t particularly pretty at first. But, he worked hard, and got better over time.

He was also never a big glove guy in the minors, but I didn’t realize (until I checked now) that he played 2B the first few years, then switched to 3B. Then back in the majors.

ANd just for fun, his age 23 year (in AAA), he had a .813 OPS, and a .918 FA. That last # sound familiar?

funny, but at 23, Murphy played mostly at AA, and of course with the MEts, and had an OPS of .870, and a FA at 3B of .927, Actually beat utley at both.

          3. fongy2

Actually he WAS a 2Bman in the minors BUT was moved for a yr to 3B AND WAS BRUTAL THERE.
They then moved him BACK to 2B.

  4. stickguy

MB has some more tidbits up.

    I liked this one:

Beltran is making tremendous progress, and might play in an extended Spring Training game as soon as tomorrow.

That my friends is what is called “positive news”

unless of course the next report is about him hobbling off, but hey, gotta start someplace!

    1. metsfan4decades

LOl – Love Beltran but I’ll believe it when I see him back in uniform.

      1. fongy2

As I said when this whole Knee-Op scandal first went down…”Not
        before Memorial Day…
        And maybe not until
        after The All-Star break”.

  5. CaseStreet

Dessens. Seems like Jerry broke nieve and iggy.

  6. metsfan4decades

I always liked Murph. Don’t really know where he’ll wind up when all is said and done.

That being said….I really think Castillo is going to hit the DL sooner rather than later. I also think part of Pelf’s success this year is the better defense he’s got behind him. So whoever plays second for the DL stint, better be someone who has something more than just passable defensive skills…

    1. stickguy

I think he goes on when they get back to NY. He will be checked out on Friday, and shut down.

      My guess of course.

    2. fongy2

Mes think Murph winds up in Cleveland with another secondary prospect for
      Westbrook.

  7. CaseStreet

Sorry murph can’t be a 2b. You can’t learn footwork.
With pagan hitting 2nd and castilo/Cora 8th I don’t see the need for Murphy. I’d rather have better d

    1. fongy2

From someone who often disagrees with me….
      THANK YOU Sir!
      What happened to “Defense and
      Pitching”…AND…”Strength
      up the middle”???

    2. stickguy

well, you can learn footwork. It is all jus technique around the bag, and that can be taught, with a ton or practice of course.

I think you mean you can’t learn foot speed, and that of course is a lot harder (but there are coaches that can improve it).

Look, I don’t think Murphy is going to become the next Joe Morgan or even Jeff Kent. But I do think, with some time, he can become a serviceable 2B, even if it is at the utility guy level.

But all I really ask for is him to get a bunch of games at AAA at 2B, so he can be judged on actual performance, not everyone’s preconceived notions.

I think that is reasonable to ask for, as long as they aren’t doing it at the ML level!

      1. fongy2

I dont totally disagree BUT foot-speed isn’t a big-deal. Footwork is however a HUGE deal @2B AND he aint gonna learn that in a couple weeks in the minors, especially since the kids foot work at other positions isn’t great to start out with.
        Look, leave him there
in Buffalo atleast a couple more months, playing 2B everyday….And then we’ll see where he is.
This kid, coming up,playing 2B AND maybe costing this team a game or two with bad D is something they cannot afford right now.
        Its as simple as that.
It would be one thing if this kid had already shown himself to be a LOCK.300 Hitter OR 20/25HR
        guy BUT he hasn’t
and to get .270 w/double figure HR power with the Bat
        BUT taking the already
        less than great D @2B
another notch or two down is n ot a plus.
        Not with a staff of
        contact Pitchers.

  8. fongy2

    Frenchy-Cora-Blanco-Johan?
    Six-Seven-Eight-Nine?
    Whew!…..That’s ALOT of outs!

    1. CaseStreet

      Johan hits grand slam today.

      1. fongy2

        your mouth to God’s ear!

  9. fongy2

Two more things, Can Johan do this
by throwing a few less Pitches??
At this rate,he’ll be gone by the 6th! Part of an Aces job is to protect the Pen and therefore the
    rest of the Staff.
Also, HOW? Is this Padre team
10 over and in 1st Place in June???
    Who are these guys???

    1. stickguy

      smoke, mirrors and fundies.

      1. fongy2

Unreal!…Can we ever get one season like that???
