Ol’ Crazy Eights Francoeur.
I forgot to mention this in my “superstition” post but when I picked up Francoeur earlier this season for my “other” fantasy team he promptly went 0 for 17 before I dropped him. You’re welcome Jeff.

Redefining Gravedigger one fantasy pick at a time.
This “coincidence” is the prototypical fate of a true met fan.

I just can’t have any Mets, whether coincidence or not they under-perform when on my team, universally (there is literally no exception to this phenomenon).
I almost picked up Pagan the other day, I was one click away. Then I thought “I can’t do that to him, and to my fellow Mets fans” so I picked up Corey Hart instead. I can’t believe Hart was still available 2 days ago considering this HR binge he’s been on.
Steve Phillips just described Bryce Harper as “Joe Mauer with Mike Piazza offense” to which Francesa responded “Oh my God.”

Yeah… Joe Mauer with Mike Piazza offense in a high school league…

Good stuff. This is why I can’t do fantasy baseball, it would drive me nuts. I bet Mike was thinking in his head “oh, born to be a Yankee” regarding Bryce. He’s probably counting off the days to free agency as of this moment.

SO, he has 8 days of production, sandwiched around 5 weeks of ineptitude that would get him benched on an A ball team.
Not really the way to go about having a successful season.
I know that all players have hot and cold patches, but the Mets seem to take it to another level of extreme!

It is the years and 1000′s of ABs of general suckitude that makes me feel the 5 weeks of breathtaking bad is more of the true Frenchy.

Funny you are actually wrong he has actually been more good then bad. The following stats are for games up to May 19,2010 which is when I did this breakdown.
Frenchy’s 1st 3 years 2005, 2006, 2007 he had good years.
He also had a good 2nd half in 2009 as a Met and the 1st 10 games of 2010. If you take all those plate appearances
and add them up you have,
2005 – 274 plate appearances
2006 – 686 plate appearances
2007 – 696 plate appearances
2009 – 308 plate appearances (As A Met)
2010 – 043 plate appearances
Total = 2,007 plate appearances
If you compare that to seasons where he struggled.
2008 – 652 plate appearances
2009 – 324 plate appearances (As A BRAVE)
2010 – 109 plate appearances (As of May 19, 2010)
Total = 1,085 plate appearances
You can make an argument that Frenchy has been good far more than he has been not so good over his career so far.

I think we have a new topic for Mythbusters!

If you are saying “frenchy sucks” is the myth, then I have my big “true” stamp all ready to go. You my friend are going down, and going down hard! I actually looked up numbers (usually I just pull stats out of my arse).
ops+ RBI
2005 – 126 45
2006 – 87 103 (29 HRs)
2007 – 102 105
2008 – 72
2009A- 68
2009M- 120
2010- 90
OK, now what do we take from these numbers? In 1/2 year as a rookie, he had his best ever ops. Small sample, obviously pitchers challanged him. 2006, they figured out he was a wild hacker, and he put up a mind numbingly bad OPS+. Talk about Murphy 2009, and take 20% away.
Ah, but he did have 29/103! More to do with hitting in the middle of a pretty good lineup, and getting almost 700 PAs. ANYONE would have gotten 100 ribbies there!
ANd, that was the only time he broke 20 HRS.
2007, he rebounded to an OPS+ of 102, meaning he was barely better than a guy called up from AAA. Again, 105 ribbies, but in 700 PAs.
2008 even you know was a disaster. OPS+ of 72! that is below pitcher level.
2009, even worse (68) with the Braves. But 120 with the Mets (certainly looks like a small sample career outlier. Still for the year, only about 90ish.
2010, even with his hot start and last 8 games, he is sitting at a sub standard 90.
His career averages are dismal. And if you discount his 1/2 year (call it the Murphy effect), even more mind blowingly bad. As in GM jr. over the last 3 years, but much worse.

Dude are you serious? ops+?
If he gave me right now what he did in 2007 i’d be dancing a jig.
In 2007 he played 162 games .293/BA 19/HR 40/2B 105/RBI 84/R
Do yourself a favor and actually look at the production he provided in 2005,2006 and 2007 spare me with the ops+.

I will bet you that if you hit Murphy where Frenchy hit in the lineup, and gave him 700 PAs, he would put up more than 105 RBIs.
Frnechy also had a sub-.300 OBP>
Basically, he got a ton of ABs, and made a huge number of outs.

OK there is no point in going any further. In your eyes 2007 was a terrible year.
Ok in the end we will get nowhere so I’ll spare you any further debate.
The bigger picture is that we need Frenchy to get hot and give us what he gave us last season when Minaya traded for him.
