Jesus Feliciano’s Agent Melvin Román Says In The Past Mets Have Not Been Fair With Client

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York 1st reported that Jesus Feliciano’s agent Melvin Román told the Puerto Rico-based newspaper El Nuevo Dia that he expects the career minor leaguer to be promoted to the Mets as soon as this weekend.

Rubén A. Rodríguez who wrote the article quotes Roman to say,

“Hemos hablado sobre su progreso y Minaya me ha dejado saber que será en esta semana cuando le den la oportunidad. Él piensa que ya es hora”
English Translation:We talked about his progress and Minaya has let me know that it will be this week when they will give him the chance. He thinks it’s about time

En los pasados años no fueron justos con él y creo que se han dado cuenta”
English Translation:In past years they were not fair with him and I think they realize it,

That last quote makes you wonder if what Nelson Figueroa said a few weeks ago condeming the Mets organization’s practices of not rewarding good players in the farm system and then mentioning for example players like Feliciano played any part in Minaya’s decision to bring Feliciano up? Most likely not but the important thing is regardless of what led to the decision it will be nice to see Feliciano get a chance at the Bigs.

at least calling up more guys from the minors should warm old Kingman’s heart up.

Every team has plenty of career MiL guys (older players or journeymen, that hop from org to org). And most of them don’t ever get a taste of the show.

So I don’t think the Met’s actually “owe” him anything. They offered a MiL deal, and he took it. And for many of these guys, it is probably a better job than they would have outside of BB, plus of course, they still have that dream!

Now, in this case, he really has played very well for the last couple of years, and probably should have had a call up by now. His age though is a big red X, but I thought the Mets should have just gone into ST with guys like him and Pridie (and whoever else they found) competing for the BU CF job, instead of getting GMjr. Though that probably had more to do with worry that Pagan wouldn’t be able to take the job FT, so they might need a guy that could start (ignoring, of course, the obvious issue of why they thought Gary could!)

Anyway, this shoudl be an interesting couple of days. I think a few people even had it circled as a “come to jesus” point.

Really, this could be the perfect storm of change here.

Just back home from another bad trip. Sitting dead on the mediocre line (.500). Basically exactly at the 1/3 point of the season, so plenty of play to evaluate, but lots of time to implement fixes. A day off today for the “braintrust” (that has to go in quotes) to meetand really hash out what is right and wrong with the team, and figure out moves.

Combine all that with the facts that there are a few guys absolutely crapping the bed, at least 1 that is screaming for a DL stint, and they have to make a move anyway to get Saturday’s SP on the roster, and of course how terrible they are on the road. And a couple not great teams coming in, followed by an AL road trip to lousy teams.

Put this all together, and if there was ever a time for making a bunch of moves to try and get the team straightened out, this is it. A total no brainer opportunity.

Of course, with this FO, they will probably do next to nothing. Maybe DL or demote Valdes for Neise, and possibly slappy on the DL for Tejada (though Jerry will then start Cora every day, with his .570 OPS and lack of range).

ANd notice, I got this far without stating the obvious, what a perfect time to hold the Manager and coaches accountable for what, to me, is underperformance based on what should be expected from this much talent.

  3. Kingman 26

Stick, ANY change right now is positive.

Last Friday and last night we were basically two men short in the pen with Ollie and the apparently overused Nieve.

So in each close game Jerry uses Feliciano, maybe our best reliever for ONE BATTER.

At this point, it is again becoming VERY hard to watch a team which anyone above Little League should know is horribly crippled by an absolutely abominable manager.

    1. stickguy

agreed about the manager. But while I hope he gets purged today, I don’t expect it to happen.

I honestly wonder if the FO really pays attention to and analyzes how Jerry runs the team (ignoring the W-L record). ANd if they do, do they think he is actually doing a good job? bad job? average job?

But most importantly, do they care what he is doing, and if someone else (AKA a 2nd paycheck) could likely do better?

also, you can’t keep taking guys out of the pen to start, without replacing them with other arms to do the same job.

      1. Kingman 26

What do you think the players (Mets AND the opposition) think when they see Jacobs, Catalanotto, or Tatis batting cleanup?

      2. fongy2

        I think to be fair,
        given that Reyes has
        done little,Wright has
        been not very good,Bay
has homered in 2 of the first 54 gms,Beltran still hasn’t put on a uni,
Johan hasn’t exactly been a lights out Ace,
we got little from Ollie,Maine&Niese b/f
        they got hurt again,
the closer has looked like Todd Jones AND the rest of the Pen
        hasn’t been great
it could be argued Jerry’s done a pretty good job overall to be
.500 and not far outta first a third of the way through.

    2. fongy2

Again , my friend…I don’t disagree that Jerry is no great shakes as Mgr…BUT what
exactly is he to do with a Staff that includes a solid ace, a strong #2 and not much
else. A BP who’s closer is
more and more pitching like Todd Jones and has now blown
10 saves in the past year,
      a real good situational Lefty
      and….Well…Not much else.
KRod is being paid ALOT of money to close games like yesterday….It’s not like he
      was Pitching against last yrs
      Yank or Phil line-up.
It certainly looks more and more like the Angels knew what they were doing by letting him walk away.
Unless Omar can somehow get a Leyland,Sciosia,Pinella,Maddon,Cox or Franconer in here….
      What’s the point???
      Omar should go first!!!
      Yes great p.u. w/Barajas and
      Takahashi…And great luck w/
Dickey…BUT he is the person most responsible for hiring, acquiring and setting the make-up AND tone of this
      team.
We can switch out Jerry for Melvin…Or switch out HoJo for Oberkfell…But id THAT
      gonna change things with this
      team???
Again, if the Wilpon’s wanted to be bold (And get it right)
      they’d approach Bobby V. RE:
      Managing…Giving him a say
      over player movement…AND..
find out which guys he’d like
to work with in the FO, as GM
      Ast.GM….Etc….

      1. stickguy

well, the Angels are generally a smart organization. And at lest with their own players, they know what they are doing. So if they are waving bye bye, consider tht a big red flag.

Not that the players are all shot, but certainly not worth close to what other teams will pay them, and not likely to last out the contract.

      2. Kingman 26

1–Not use our best reliever for one batter when we are short in the pen.

2–Not ever bat second-rate bench players cleanup.

        That’s just for starters.

Omar? He did a great job with the catcher position, did OK with the pen, and did not sign Pineiro/Marquis/Wolf/Harden/Sheets/Lackey etc.

But he must bring in 1-2 starters, a 2B, and a new bench outside of Blanco for next year.

        1. stickguy

Well, I was one of the lone voices calling for the new 2B THIS year. So far, I consider myself right on that! But we are stuck this season, and frankly, if he can stay healthy and get another 300ABs + the fall league (and not break down), Havens likely is next years rookie sensation.

And the bench usually has a lot of churn anyway (between and during seasons), but for sure, cora and Tatis need to be elsewhere.

For sure, at least 1 more legit starter (not a hope/prayer guy or reclaimation project). Right now, millwood would be perfect. Or if they could get Myers from Houston on the cheap, also fantastic.

Ollie is gone someone by this off season, and I highly doubt maine will be anything more than fighting for a pen or #5 spot (“in the mix”) next spring, if he is even here. So that would mean 2.

so, the way thing s work, if Neise is solid the rest of this year, johan/pelf/neise get pencilled in as locks. THey bring in 1 more “real” guy (lee? who knows) that also is guaranteed a spot.

Then they have ST open tryouts for the #5 guy, on the cheap.

      3. metsfan4decades

        All points I agree with – mostly…..

IDK about Bobby V. as manager – again. If they do fire Jerry mid year, it’s going to be a interim manager not Bobby V. If Jerry is not back next year, then they should start looking right now for the absolute best guy for the job they can get.

Saw a post somewhere this morning on KRod. Said he had always over used his secondary pitches but when his velocity was up, it wasn’t as much as an issue as it seems to be now. Truthfully though, if I look at stats for year’s past, I’m only seeing that FB down 1MPH.
KRod had 62 saves out of 66 opportunities that last year with the Angels. What’s not to like about that? Obviously, they just didn’t want to pay him what he was asking…
On that note though, KRod hasn’t looked quite as good with the Mets as he did with the Angels. He’s getting paid to do one thing and he blew that one thing last night…

  4. trs86

    This is all Figgy’s fault.

    1. metsfan4decades

      LOL….

  5. DNDJohan aka kistics

What the Mets needed past couple years is a power bat. Mets had plenty of speed. Feliciano has 1 HR so far in the season. That’s not exactly what the Met were looking for.

Plus, when you have Beltran, Pagan, Bay, Frenchy in the OF, how to do you expect your client to make it to the bigs?

    1. Kingman 26

      This is another Pascucci/Carter situation.

      A career minor leaguer.

      Yawn.

    2. Mr North Jersey

well if you are talking about this year I wouldnt include Beltran since he has no definitive return date and until he is playing in rehab games who knows when he will be back if ever this season.

You do have a point though in years past would anyone prefer him over say a Cory Sullivan or a Jeremy Reed or a Endy Chavez? I am not sure I would.

      1. fongy2

Maybe not but I’d prefer him or anyone
over the total washed-up scrub that is Gary Matthews Juicer!

        1. Mr North Jersey

I had this discussion in the past but let me ask you this Fongy.

Do you feel GMJ is only here because of his glove?

If so do you think Feliciano replacing him won’t be that much of a drop in defense?

          1. fongy2

I think GMjr is still here b/c Omar is hard-headed.
The only MLB skill GMjr ever had sans juicing
            was his D..
Which now isn’t what it once was b/c of age….
            So….
            What’s the point?
            We’re talking
            the 25th man here.

          2. Mr North Jersey

So can I deduce from that that you feel there is no significant drop off defensively replacing GMJ with Feliciano?

          3. fongy2

            Significant?..No.
I mean how much is he gonna play Anyway?
I would be nice thouigh to send a guy up to the plate as a PH who actually has a chance to get on base.

          4. Mr North Jersey

            Agreed his hitting sucks.

I ask only because I figured the only reason he was still here was due to his glove and never about his bat.

  6. metsfan4decades

Sounds like GMJ maybe shouldn’t unpack his backs when he gets back to NY…

  7. metsfan4decades

Our problem right now is pitching, pitching, pitching…..

    1. fongy2

Agreed!…If you can’t trust your Pen,you need 7inns a night out of all your starters.Conversely,if if your
      rotation is Johan,Pelf,a Hope,
      a Prayer and a Wish…..Well
      you need serious pitching out
      of the Pen.

    2. DNDJohan aka kistics

      Not for Santana and Pelf.
