The Mets come back home tonight to take on the Florida Marlins after failing to take 2 out of 3 vs the Padres and losing the chance of finishing the road trip 3-3 instead of 2-4. The Padres bullpen was masterful at holding the Mets down from scoring runs late and clearly proved that their pen is not one to be taken lightly. In the series the difference between the Padres starters and the relievers is like night and day.
The Padres starters vs the Mets:
STARTERS = 17.1/IP 18/H 9/ER 9/BB 12/SO 4.72/ERA
The Padres relievers vs the Mets:
RELIEVERS = 11.2/IP 6/H 2/ER 2/BB 13/SO 1.61/ERA
Coming into today the Padres pen is 1st in the NL in the following categories:Â ERA, BB, SO, BAA, OBP, SLG, OPS, WHIP, and K/BB. The Mets didn’t take 2 out of 3 vs the Padres but it’s not like they went up against the DiamondBacks. They need to simply tip their hat and move on. Hang in there Mets fans they still have time to right this ship.Below is a breakdown on what the Padres Bullpen did against the Mets. A pen that takes on the Phillies this weekend.

If they go in and sweep the Phils, I wil forgive them.
And it looks like Jerry whipping that Webb guy.

I recall someone relevant (possibly Ron Darling) saying that Bud Black’s greatest strength as a manager is assembling and deploying a bullpen. At least based on 2010 it’s hard to argue with that. They’ve won twice as many games when scoring 3 runs or less than any other team in MLB.

Nice observation Grave I wasn’t aware of that. That’s a pretty impressive stat for the Padres.

I’m not sure if it’s still true but I know one of the Mets announcers mentioned that at the beginning of the series.
As of last night the Padres have won 12 games when scoring 3 runs or less, for comparison the Mets have won 5 such games.
