Jerry Manuel Says “You can start the clock,” Counting Down Beltran’s Return To Lineup But Is It Too Soon?

#Mets - Carlos Beltran takes some swings before his first gam... on TwitpicYou can start the clock,” Jerry Manuel said, referring to the 4-6 weeks the center fielder would need before returning to the Mets lineup.

Carlos Beltran played in his first extended spring training game today what does that mean?

Beltran took three at-bats from each side of the plate he went 2 for 6 with 2 singles while never running at full speed. Also Beltran never played the field and has yet to be cleared for complete baseball activities.

A team official even described it as “nothing crazy” as far as baserunning. So other than taking at bats out in the field rather than in a cage what exactly has Beltran done for Jerry to say start the clock?

I wouldn’t read much if anything at all into this. Until you hear that Beltran was catching flyballs in the outfield I wouldn’t start any countdown clock.

maybe too early, if you expect the clock to run continuously with no stops/starts!

But, if this is what they considered to be the point from which the 4-6 would be measured, then I guess it does make sense.

4 weeks just sounds too optomistic. So spoit the diffrence. 5 weeks from today is the weekend before the ASB. so that makes little sense.

so 6 weeks is basically right after the ASG. WHich IIRC, many people had in the pool!

If he is back on the field for the last home stand (first full week of July) it would be aazing.

Considering we have yet to see how he will do when he runs at full speed or cuts to his left or right or when he will be cleared for baseball activities which that bone bruise definitely seems to be the main culprit at preventing him to be cleared. I won’t hold my breath at him coming back even if it is in 4 to 6 weeks.

This is easy. Start the clock simply means a countdown towards obvious improvement of the team, which implies confidence and faith in doing better, and when you think you’re team is in a good place, you don’t fire the manager.

The fact that he’s out on the field hitting, and running (albeit slowly) the bases is a step forward in a process. If a representative of the team is going to bother to say “start the countdown” then I’ll go ahead and start it. These countdown things are all “guesstimates” anyway so I’m not going to point and shout if 6 weeks and 1 day from now he’s not on active on the Mets 25 man roster.

Are setbacks possible? Of course they are, and if they come up the countdown will be suspended or postponed, but until I read or hear about any setbacks I will consider the recovery process ramped up and the countdown to his return underway.

Just for the record, 6 weeks is July 16th. July 15th is the first day after the allstar break.

    2. Mr North Jersey

When you think that he was expected back by mid to late May and it is now June 5th I agree that setbacks are possible.

My understanding is he has been jogging for a few weeks now so today’s announcement doesn’t add anything new to the mix. Beltran from what I understand hit a ball and jogged to 1st, that’s it.

I may be over-simplifying I just don’t see enough there to get my hopes up.

I continue to wait for the day that Beltran catches a flyball in the outfield. For me that will be a great day.

“I continue to wait for the day that Beltran catches a flyball in the outfield. For me that will be a great day”

Man, you have certainly set the expectations bar mighty low!

        1. Mr North Jersey

          :-)

          You think that is low?

That will be what tells me that he is officially on his way back. A feat that has yet to be done by him in 2010.

        HAHAHA!!!!

just to be a PITA, I want to complain about today’s moves.

As much as I like slappy being gone for a while (and don’t bet on it being just 15 days), it might have been better to call up that justin turner dude for some time at 2B. Just have a feeling he would provide more production.

    But, hopefully tejada surprises me.

    1. Mr North Jersey

That feeling you have is your body telling you it’s time to go to the bathroom.

      I’d hurry if I was you. :-)

    2. trs86

I am not sure stick but it could be something to do with service time. Also his line in AAA is not much different. Perhaps he is not as good defensively. Turner this season in AAA has a .269 BA .333 OBP. He’s done much better in his 25 AB’s with the Mets.

    LOL!

August 1 if we are VERY lucky.

    1. ceetar

bah. Very lucky implies no setbacks and I’d say July 5th, homestand. Lucky is before the All-star break period, and just ‘normal luck’ is July.

      1. Kingman 26

July 5th? He is not running full speed, has a history of injuries taking forever, and you think he is back in 31 days?

        Sure.

        1. ceetar

no, you’re the one that used Very lucky. I was just defining it. I’m not predicting Beltran’s return.

  6. GravediggerHebner

If nothing else Hanley Ramirez is not boring. Today he said this:

“They boo their own players so we like to come here and beat the Mets.” “We just laugh every time they boo their own players. It’s weird.”

    1. trs86

      Gotta agree with him.

      1. Kingman 26

        Me too Chief.

Next year when we finally start kicking the Marlins around, it sure will be sweet.

    2. Mr North Jersey

Sounds like a man seeking attention.

He is a great player if that gets him up to beat the Mets more power to him.

      1. trs86

If you think about it from the opposing side it is quite funny.

        1. Mr North Jersey

          Hey, whatever helps.

          1. trs86

I am not getting the impression that he is saying that is what motivates them. It’s something they like to do obviously and an added benefit is the Mets get booed by their own fans.

          2. Mr North Jersey

Agreed It’s merely a perk from beating the Mets. Something he enjoys. If that gives him pleasure more power to him.

    3. metsfan4decades

Yeah, but the Met fans are not the only ones who boo their own players. I heard plenty of that watching some Philly and Yankee games this year.

Reason the Marlins don’t hear much booing from their fans is b/c they’d have to actually have fans in the stands to have that booing heard…

      1. GravediggerHebner

I know I can be obtuse but I never thought a conversation about my comment would get this far before someone got the point I was trying to make, which is most if not all (St. Louis possible exception) home crowds boo home players from time to time. Hanley suggesting that it happening here is “weird” is, well, weird.

Lets focus on something we can be happy about. Soon a bad GMJR will be replaced by an even worse Jesus Feliciano.

    1. ceetar

It’s almost mathematically impossible to be worse. (unless you’re Omir Santos) Feliciano will be just fine.

      1. trs86

        GMJR last 28 days: .313 .353 .375 .728

        1. ceetar

worthless meaningless hits. and still like 3 of them.

          1. Mr North Jersey

If there was ever a time where stats didn’t tell the story this would be it.

        2. tkfj2

AVG:.190 OBP: .266 SLG: .241 OPS: .507. I can use stats too, except they prove how terrible he is. Regardless of playing time, dead weight is dead weight and it is even more dead weight your manager likes to PH quite often.

          Also 24 K’s in 58 AB’s, K’ing at a 41.4% rate.

          Felly can be no worse.

    2. Mr North Jersey

Let me guess, GMJ was part of your fantasy Baseball team? ;-)

      1. trs86

Uh No. I just never have seen all the fuss replacing a bad GMJR with a career minor leaguer Feliciano.

        1. Mr North Jersey

:-) If thats the case then replacing a bad GMJ with Feliciano like you said will be much ado about nothing.

Now the Mets can move on to find who will be Feliciano’s replacement then.

    3. Kingman 26

Boy are you guys burying the lead—in 65 PA, GMJ had ONE RBI!!!

      ONE RBI!!

      And 3 XBH.

      Checked out Stokes’ stats?

      16 IP, 24 H, 16 BB–a 2.50 WHIP!

What a trade for the ages that was.

    Off to the dugout
