FUller is having a nice little season.
seems like the only SP doing much in the minors is down in A ball (in this case low A). WOuld be nice to see a few guys with high upside (as in real “stuff”) start dominating in AA.

I’d promote Fuller and consider moving Holt to the closer role at Bing

Don’t you think it’s too early to give up on Holt’s SP career?

Might as well. We all know that closers are more important than effective SP’s.

Well, it just happens that our relievers get more innings than our starters, so you may be right.

I was being sarcastic, but that works…..I guess.

Holt according to almost every scout is going to land in the pen. He tops off at 92-93 in the opening inning and then drops down to 90-91 in the second and beyond. His secondary pitches are rudimentary. In the pen he can probably crank it up to 94-95 for 1 inning stints.
Toby Hyde from last year “Holt survived, and thrived at the lower levels on his velocity. However, to have success at AA and eventually the big leagues as a starter, Holt must learn to work hitters better. He simply did not throw his secondary offerings enough to keep even AA hitters off-balance. However, when he used the pitches in unpredictable sequences, that is, not on 0-2, or not doubling up on an offering, he was much more effective, offering some modest hope for the future.” and this year he has been demolished at AA once again.

See in my opinion because his FB is not very high he is more suited as a #5 pitcher than a reliever trying to dial it up to 94.

Brad Holt career at AA- 19 starts 82 innings 92 hits 42 walks 64 k’s 11 homers allowed 7.13 era 1.63 whip
2009 AA-58 innings 58 hits 23 walks 45 k’s 6.21 era 1.40 whip
2010 AA- 24 innings 34 hits 19 walks 19 k’s 9.38 era 2.20 whip
He is turning 24 years old this year, this isn’t some 18 year old struggling along the way.

More from Hyde-
TH: 92-93 is still above average for a fastball, but it’s not really “special,†in my book. When Holt was dominating the NYP back in ‘08 he was regularly 94-95 and touching 96. Without that extra velo, his prospect status is way down.

Furthermore… a team that has won more than one championship in the last 10 years drafted a big armed college starter with the 28th pick in the first round. The pitcher reported to the minors and was absolutely HORRIBLE posting a 7.08 era with a 2.05 whip as a 22 year old in the SAL/CAL leagues. This team then decided to try a move to the pen with this pitcher. 77.2 innings later at the MLB level the Red Sox look like they made the right move with Daniel Bard.
