More Roster News: GMJ DFA’d, Return of Omir

Update: According to ESPN’s Adam Rubin, the Omir Santos call-up is likely temporary, and Omar Minaya has promised to soon call up Jesus Feliciano to be the new backup outfielder.

In addition to the roster move of placing Castillo on the 15-day DL and recalling Tejada as his replacement…

Gary Matthews Jr has finally been designated for assignment, replaced on the roster by Omir Santos. Why the Mets will have 3 catchers on the roster (shades of ’09) isn’t certain to me, but I suppose Santos is a better hitter off the bench?

All 3 catcher bat right handed so why Santos I don’t know.

OF Jesus Feliciano is hitting .388/.435/.488 in AAA Buffalo w/ 13 BB and 16 K in 50 G. He can play CF and LF. Santos can’t.

Punishment of Jesus Feliciano’s agent for revealing private conversations? Probably not. I will hope it’s to facilitate a near-future trade of Santos somehow. Unless the Mets are giving up on 2010 then it’s a Barajas trade (I kid, I kid).

Didn’t Blanco have a family emergency recently, maybe something has changed with that?

Could be I think Blanco had a sick family member I hope it’s not anything to do with that.

yeah, this move makes little sense in a vacuum.

at least teh dominos are falling.

But, while they were raiding the minors, couldn’t they grab a couple of fresh pen arms for Jerry to grossly mismanage (err, use, yeah, that was the word I was looking for).

KBurkhardtSNY Beltran 2-6, 2 singles, didn’t run in extended spring. Not sure what that means exactly.

So basically he had batting practice but instead of in a cage he stood out on the field.

    No news here.

Let me know when he shags flyballs in the outfield.

they do that a lot for guys just starting EST type games. Reyes did the same thing. You go out and have your ABs, but don’t run them out.

Wait, don’t they have some guys on the big club that do the same thing on occasion?)

Still, it is a nice semblence of progress. I still don’t expect to see him back in my lifetime, but you can at least envision a scenerio now where he plays in a game like a real player.

Actually, mush more fun would be having them hit then hop on a donkey to get around the bases. ALways funny when they play softball like that!

      1. Mr North Jersey

I will wait to say he had any progress till he is running out in CF catching flyballs. Only then will we relly know where he is at.

Today while nice show me nothing.

3 catchers brings back memories of the Stearns/Hodges/Trevino days. Not fond memories, but memories nonetheless.

Basically with the exception of learning that Blanco is banged up a very good Mets-news day continues with each of your updates.

well, Cortizone shots usually work, take a couple of days, and he’s a backup so shouldn’t be a huge deal. Hopefully Omir doesn’t get more than like 1 AB.

why no Thole this time? I mean, really? oh right..he freaking got hurt the other day too right? *swears*

      2. GravediggerHebner

        Sounds logical.

          You and your spock-ness.

So, what are the odds GMJ is just chilling on the couch for the next 2 years? Granted, the couch prob. cost about 12K and is so comfortable, you would not want to get out of it…

If he’s inclined to go play at Buffalo for a while he can afford to buy the team a nice new bus like this one (note the young Terry Francona)
