Post Game: Dickey Delights, Fish Flounder

If Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (3-0) keeps this up, we’re going to have to just call him Baller R.A. Dickey, because he’s showing that he knows how to ball like a good Dickey should.  Tonight he threw 104 pitches over 6 1/3 innings, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4 in picking up the win.  Pedro Feliciano and Elmer Dessens got through the rest of the 7th and the 8th without any trouble.  Then Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez walked the closer tightrope successfully, getting 2 quick outs before allowing a single, then a walk to put the tying and go ahead runs on base for the mercurial Hanley Ramirez.  To add to the drama, with Ramirez batting Rodriguez threw a wild pitch moving both baserunners into scoring position.  But Rodriguez induced Ramirez to ground to third baseman David Wright and then Ramirez failed to run hard out of the box while Wright’s throw from foul territory bounced to first baseman Ike Davis for the final out of the game and the end of the Mets 6-game losing streak to Florida.

The Mets fell behind early.  In the 2nd inning Cody Ross tripled and scored on a Cameron Maybin single to make it 1-0 Marlins.  Then in the 3rd inning Marlins starter Anibal Sanchez led off with a single.  Reigning NL Rookie of the Year Chris Coghlan followed with a single, then Gaby Sanchez reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no one out.  Ramirez then grounded into a fielder’s choice driving in Sanchez, and Mets first baseman Davis dropped the throw for an error allowing Coghlan to score and the Marlins led 3-0.  Ramirez was thrown out at home by Angel Pagan later in the inning.

In the bottom of the 3rd rookie infielder Ruben Tejada, just called up by the Mets today when second baseman Luis Castillo went on the disabled list, led off with a double.  Dickey then showed that he knows what to do with wood, faking a bunt then slashing an RBI single off of the first base bag.  Later in the inning Jason Bay hit a double off the base of the left field wall to drive in Dickey and make the score 3-2.

The Mets took the lead for good in the 6th.  Wright walked with 1 out.  Rod Barajas doubled to left moving Wright to third base.  A Jeff Francoeur RBI single plated Wright with the tying run.  Barajas then scored the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice grounder hit by Tejada.  Just for good measure Dickey then hit his second single of the game but no more runs were scored in the New York Mets 4-3 win over the visiting Florida Marlins.

Nice G-Rated way of doing the postgame Grave.

RA Dickey – what’s not to like? He goes out there, gets the job done without much drama. Plus he give us innings and innings of fodder for jokes in the Dugout. LOL.

KRod always have to give you the drama, though. However, he got the job done tonight. Dessens, conversly is quietly getting the outs when needed.
Bats did just enough to get it done as well.

Meanwhile when asked after the game, Jerry said no decision yet on the roster move for Niese tomorrow. I have to believe they haven’t made that final decision yet b/c they’re still either working on ‘it’ or debating it.
    - Mejia hasn’t pitched since Monday.
    - Don’t think Nieve has pitched since his start.
    - Valdes almost looks like there is something wrong with that straight up delivery.
    - Iggy has something like a 35.0 ERA in his past 5 appearances.
    - Then there’s Ollie.

I really have no idea what the roster move will be. I know what I want it to be….

      my vote’s for Valdes.

who knows. we’ll find out soon enough.

It’s a travesty that Manuel has any input, particularly with how he uses Mejia.

Maybe Nieve has recovered now from Manuel and cna go back to being effective.

here is an idea for you.

If they won’t replace jerry, can they at least take away all responsibility for pitching moves? Let someone else make the call to pull the SP, and when and which RPs to use.

I don’t even care who it is (well, maybe not Warthen). hell, let Jeffy do it from his box. Even better, maybe Ojeda or Ronnie could do it from the booth or studio?

        1. ceetar

Actually, I’d much prefer if he didn’t have any roster input whatsoever, but he appears to be part of the ‘braintrust’ or whatever and it’s mostly detrimental.

          1. stickguy

I still want to know who wanted/wants mejia up, and who wants him down. And of course, who is actually making the final decision (and who has the most pull)

    2. stickguy

my vote is for about 3 moves, not just one. Of course getting ollie off the roster would help immensely.

But beyond that, I would like to see valdes DL or down, and Mejia down to start.

Ideally, niese, parnell (or acosta) and misch up. Ollie, Valdes and mejia down.

      1. metsfan4decades

Losing Ollie and Valdes right now works for me. Valdes was very good for awhile but last two outings – at least – he appears to be favoring something, almost standing straight up in his delivery. I just don’t remember it being that pronounced earlier.

I’m thinking the roster move(s) won’t involve Mejia right now.

        1. stickguy

after ronnie harped on that, you would hope they had it looked at on the off day. Not that he is likely to admit to any problem.

but, if he has options, send him down.

but again, unless you are going to give ollie a prominent role, you can’t remove another RP that gets used for a SP.

And I really think taka needs to be put back in the pen right now. just skip his turn with the off day Thursday.

          1. ceetar

not as simple as it sounds, unless you’re going to pitch Ollie on Sunday.

the double off-day screws it up. You Pelfrey pitched Wednesday, so normal rest is monday, but it’s an off day. you’d have to pitch him on short rest to get him Sunday to miss Takahashi’s start.

          2. stickguy

really? i didn’t do the math, but I thought they just moved everyone back one and it worked out. But I didn’t bother to actually figure it out.

But, if they aren’t dumping ollie, then to get taka back in the pen, maybe ollie does need to start?

man, he is creating a mess.

          3. ceetar

personally I don’t have a problem with Ollie getting a couple more starts.

          4. stickguy

actually, trying to look objectively at the “big picture”, it probably actually makes the most sense to roll the dice, and let Ollie make what would effectively be a spot start.

        2. stickguy

oh, if they don’t send Mejia down tomorrow, they need really need to start using him. Even in “high leverage” situations.

  3. stickguy

    couple thoughts:

    1) I still think Jerry was wrong to yank Dickey when he did (damn, you get dickey jokes even when you aren’t trying). he should have gotten at least 1 more batter, and the rest of the inning if he didn’t give up any more base runners.

    2) The pen really needs some fresh blood. way too many dead woods and unusables out there.

    3) Even though he is scuffling a little with the bat, isn’t it nice to have Ike and his stabalizing glove over at 1B? The whole defense has been better since he came up and settled in.

    1. ceetar

wouldn’t be the end of the world if he didn’t bat 4th while slumping though.

      1. stickguy

think jerry will flip him and frenchy? Don’t see any other logical move.

  4. metsfan4decades

This on top over on MLBTR:

If Oliver Perez does not accept a minor league assignment, the Mets may designate a reliever for assignment, according to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo. The organization is hoping that Perez will agree to the demotion by tomorrow when they plan to activate Jon Niese off of the disabled list.

In order to make room on the roster, Elmer Dessens could be DFA’d. The Mets re-signed Dessens to a minor league deal in December and have given him just 4.1 innings of work this year. Another possibility for the Mets would be to option Jenrry Mejia to Triple-A, though they may want to keep him on the big league roster.

Perez refused a minor league assignment from the Mets on Monday. The club reportedly asked the lefty at least twice to go to the minors.
    ***************************

I kind of figured when Jerry wouldn’t announce a roster move after the game, they were still trying to work out/on something with Ollie.

    1. metsfan4decades

And FaceOff on Sports Night, Malusis thinks Dessens is the 8th inning guy right now. Says it’s not always pretty, but he’s a grinder and you have to ride the hot hand.
With the amount of tired or ineffective arms out there right now in the pen, I’d hate to lose Dessens at the moment. McAnaney made the point that they’ve got in Mejia out there but Jerry isn’t using him much, so what’s he still up here for?

    2. stickguy

If they lose one of the few viable pen arms, I think we should organize a revolt and storm the castle. They have no depth as it is, and can’t afford to let go someone who is getting the job done.

Losing dessens would make even less sense, with Valdes being horrible lately. if they can’t send him down, no chance anyone is going to claim him. But it doesn’t seem far fetched to think they can come up with a valid injury for him.

maybe (hopefully) this is part of the PR campaign to guilt Ollie into accepting a 3 week vacation in fla.?

  5. stickguy

well, after chatting up above with ceetar, I am going to flip a little.

while the simple answer to the ollie problem is to release him (well, the simplest is for him to go down, but the LT simplest is to DFA!), if that isn’t happening, they are probably better off letting him start on Sunday. And put taka back in the BP, since they need the help badly.

Either that, or they need to make about 3 moves to get liver arms out there.

but they can’t lose another viable RP while keeping Ollie in no-pitch limbo.

  6. stickguy

For some reason, I liked this quote from our glorious leader. It just seemed so Jidiotish.

“Before the game, Manuel declined to explain what exactly Blanco’s injury was. “I wouldn’t want to get into the specifics,” he said, “because it might tend to give away some of this great strategy that I have with him.”

tejada might not want to get too comfortable at 2B.

reese havens hit another 2 HRs (making I believe 4 in 3 games) for Bingo. I really, really hope this dude stays healthy, because he is not far from being ready.

I don’t know if anybody previously posted this but if they didn’t here is an interesting article equating payroll dollars to wins.

    “Is payroll reduction costing Mets?
Spending money may not correlate to wins”
