I’ve done a little research, and it seems as if generally 8-10 starting pitcher make each year’s all-star game and 4-6 relievers (generally closers) make the team as well.
As far as I can tell, the Mets would have 3 possible candidates – Johan Santana, Mike Pelfrey, and Francisco Rodriguez.
Could Big Pelf Make His First All-Star Appearance This Year?
Unfortunately it’s not as easy as just picking the top 10/5 pitchers, as sometimes these roster spots are used to make sure each team has a player on the team. But in any case, let’s take a peek at how each of these three players ranks at his position (NL only – and I separated starters and relievers).
Johan Santana – tied for 14th in ERA (2.76), tied for 31st in Wins (4) , tied for 6th in Innings Pitched (78.1), tied for 20th in K’s (57)
Mike Pelfrey – 10th in ERA (2.39), tied for 2nd in Wins (8), tied for 17th in IP (71.2), tied for 27th in K’s (52)
Francisco Rodriguez – 24th in ERA (2.15), tied for 9th in Saves (11), tied for 8th in K’s (35)
So it seems as if Mike Pelfrey should be the only one with a real shot at making the roster, but given Santana’s fame and history, his inclusion wouldn’t be surprising as well. What does everyone think – who will represent the Mets as pitchers, if anyone?

If Santana can go on a Wins tear by pitching complete games and hitting home runs, I think he can get in. Pelf should get in too considering his Wins and low ERA. But like you said, it depends on how many starters from other teams get added.

Also, if Polanco makes the ASG ahead of David Wright, that’s a complete ****ing travesty. Wright is better than Polanco in pretty much every offensive category. His defensive metrics may not be as good as Polancos, but that shouldn’t make Polanco the starter.

If Pelf gets a few more wins, he is a lock.

Yup, he would join our most recent Mets All-Star Pitchers:
Benitez 03
Glavine 04 and 06
Leiter 2000
Martinez 05 and 06
Reed 2001
K-Rod 09
Santana 09
Wagner 07 and 08
Contract extension next year?

Oh yeah, and hopefully Omar can work the same magic he did with Wright and Reyes and lock him up for 3-4 years without breaking the bank.

well next year would be his first Arb. year, so it would make sense to do 4 to 5 year extension. 3 Arbitration years and 1 or 2 free agency years.

Also, a pitcher can not be selected for the ASG if he pitches the Sunday before the game. So that may work against either of Pelfrey or Santana.
I don’t care what K-Rod’s numbers are, he hasn’t pitched like an all-star.
Santana’s numbers are deceiving because he had a couple of real dog days which inflated his ERA. For most of this season he’s been outstanding even though his K rate is down from his norm (a small cause for concern?)

Like Wanny notes the schedule may wind up preventing it but that issue aside I think Pelf is the most deserving and I would consider it an injustice if he isn’t selected.
As far as hitters (I know you didn’t ask) I think Barajas might be the Met with the best shot.
