I thought the Whitesox suck cause their pitching has imploded. So doesn’t that make a bad fit for the Mets?

  2. rustyjr

I just read over at baseball America that the mets are projected to draft cox – why does it seem like we love players with phallic names

    1. stickguy

go to 5 different places and get 5 different names. But it seems that COx was hto a little while back, but there is a new flavor of th emonth.

the various reports on this guy didn’t get me all excited (not sure about where he can play, low on popwer). ANd since it was reported he wants a huge deal (6 million?) doesn’t really seem to fit with the Mets “philosophy”

I think one of the college SPs might fall. If not, who knows?

  3. stickguy

    just looked tat the roster.

    Man, that team sucks.

but, to answer your question, very little is of interest, unless they want to trade danks (and that ain’t happening).

Only other guy interesting is RIos. He certainly is haveing a rebound year. Actually seems to be earning his money for a change. I guess those of us that suggested taking him as the salary dump weren’t actually that dumb! At least so far.

But, does not seem to be an obvious fit for the mets.

    1. trs86

Hey why not Beltran for Rios? LOL. They would save a ton of money but uh….

  4. stickguy

anyway, thinking about the mets roster, from a standpoint of where they could possibly upgrade, combined where they would do it, and there isn’t much.

I don’t see them making any moves for a position player, especially while Beltran is still theoreticlaly coming back. OF is pretty crowded, and they like frenchy, and I doubt any true stud upgrades are going to drop intheir lap cheap.

catching, they are more than happy with.

Ike is locked in. Unless SD offers up a straight swap for A Gon, don’t think he is going anywhere. Obviously the left side is set.

So that leaves 2B, and with slappy on the payroll, and tejada and Haven lurking, and no good 2B liely on the market, thta is set.

So of course, that just leaves pitching. Eveyr team could use a pen arm or two, but I think the Mets come from the minors. Maybe a spare overpriced closer on a salary dump to set up? Kerry Woods anyone? SOmone like that.

So bingo, only place they can or will make a splash is adding a SP. And I don’t care that maine or ollie might be back. Deal with that later.

I think I made it clear that Haren would be great. If he ain’t coming, millwood fits the bill, especially at a bargain prospect cost.

Agreed. SP, RP and I’d say some bench help. For the bench Cora is going no where barring his thumbs falling off, Blanco is going no where, 1 of the 3 will be on the bench as they rotate the CF/RF spot (Beltran, Francouer, Pagan), One of Carter or Feliciano and Tatis. Unless you can upgrade Tatis or find a Long Ball threat for Carter or Felicino, there isn’t much to do there.

      1. trs86

Lets hope Feliciano is up for no more than a few weeks at most.

    Danks and Thornton please!

    1. GravediggerHebner

I think Kong found the perfect guys in Thornton & Danks. Thornton dominating lefty set up guy to pair with Pedro F and really give the Phillies especially but other teams with lefty batters fewer options late in games and to boot he has no particular lefty/righty split issue he goes both ways baby! The only issue is he’s not expensive so we wouldn’t be saving them money, they’d want talent.

Danks also would certainly be useful but has similar issue to Thornton in that he is only entering his 2nd arbitration year so he would be relatively cheap and under team control for multiple years, thus the cost in talent would be noteworthy IMO.

But well done Kong those are the two guys I’d want from them. IMO none of their other desirable guys fit here.

      1. njstuckintx

I’d like them too but I can’t see them parting with those guys.

How long are they burdened with some bad contracts? I know Rios is going to be a long while. Who’d they be looking to cut ties with?

        1. GravediggerHebner

I don’t see them parting with Thornton at all due to cost but they might be able to get cheap talent for him that may offset other costs. Danks next spring will be his Arbitration 2 year so he might get a significant enough raise to be considered cost-problematic for them, perhaps.

As far as big and/or lousy contracts go:

          Peavy # 11:$16M, 12:$17M, 13:$22M club option ($4M buyout)
          # full no-trade clause for 2010, may block trades to 14 clubs in 2011 and 8 clubs in 2012 (also earns 10-and-5 rights in 2012)

          Buerhle # 11:$14M
          # award bonus: $15,000 for All Star selection
          # no-trade protection
          * 2008: full no-trade clause
          * 2009 – July 15, 2010: limited no-trade protection allowing Buehrle to block trades to certain unspecified clubs. A trade triggers an escalator paying $1M raise to $15M annually, plus a guaranteed fifth year paying $15M for 2012.
          * July 16, 2010-2011: Buehrle may not be traded without his permission, under right as 10-and-5 player

          Rios # 11:$12M, 12:$12M, 13:$12.5M, 14:$12.5M, 15:$13.5M club option ($1M buyout)
          # may block trades to 6 clubs beginning in 2009
          # if traded between beginning of 2011 season and Spring Training 2014, future salaries increase by $0.5M each
          # if traded during 2014 season, 2015 option increases to $14M ($2M buyout)

          Pierre # 11:$8.5M
          # contract includes limited no-trade protection

          Linebrink # 11:$5.5M
          # no-trade protection

          Teahen 11:$4.75M, 12:$5.5M

          Floyd 11:$5M, 12:$7M, 13:$9.5M club option

A lot of these guys have no trades, the Sox may be in the position of having to trade off guys who are “relatively cheap” right now but arbitration eligible and thus likely to get big raises soon like Danks, Jenks, Quentin & Pena.

          1. DNDJohan aka kistics

            Agreed on Thornton.

    2. oleosmirf

i’ll take Buerhle, Pena and even Linebrink (even though hes had a rough year) too

    3. DNDJohan aka kistics

I thought Thornton was pretty much untouchable based on MLBTR.

  6. trs86

I think Buehrle would be fine in the NL. Owed 14M next year but if traded nets another year at 15M. So how about Ollie and prospects? LOL.

    1. metsfan4decades

I wouldn’t want to be the GM of the fans that take on Ollie – even if the Mets were willing to eat most of his contract. I really believe Ollie is our little headache for at least the remainder of this year.

Here’s hoping he makes some progress and we get something in return for that investment. Even if it’s in the form of pitching decent to up his trade value a bit for next year.

      1. oleosmirf

i’m hoping they cut their loses and never mention him again…

        1. trs86

Man you are certainly hoping against hope then.

          1. oleosmirf

i know but it will def help us the most when it comes to winning games

  7. oleosmirf

there are lots of good middle relief options out there especially on those bad teams like the Pirates, Astros, Mariners, Orioles etc.

DJ Carrasco, Javier Lopez, Brandon Lyon, Brandon League, Will Ohman, Cla Meredith to name a few

obviously you arent going to give up top prospects for middle relievers but i’m sure we could get someone of that caliber for no-one of real importance…

    1. GravediggerHebner

Very true but stay away from Lyon, obscene contract:

      Lyon 10:$4.25M, 11:$5.25M, 12:$5.5M

Otherwise I’d consider any of those guys for minimal player-in-trade cost.

      1. trs86

Hey that’s about what Ollie is owed right….? I am sure they would make that trade.

  8. trs86

A look at some likely guys and their contracts AFTER this season.
    Floyd: 2/12M left
    Putz: FA
    Konerko: FA
    Rios: 4/50
    Danks: Arbi 2
    Jenks: Arbi 3
    Teahen: 2/11
    Linebrink: 2/11
    AJ: FA
    Peavy 2/37
    Pierre 1/9
    Buehrle 2/29

  9. trs86

Lost in all of this is that the Sox may decide to part ways with Ozzie too. What a change that would be next year if the Mets were lead by Gullien? Hey you could even have the Cora brothers as assistants.

    1. DNDJohan aka kistics

      Wilpons would never hire Ozzie…

  10. DNDJohan aka kistics

I know this won’t probably happen, but Putz is pitching well for the Sox. His K/9 is something like 12

  11. GravediggerHebner

In the context of potential trades, Mike F just laid out this scenario:

“You’re the Mets you call the Blue Jays and say, you give me Vernon Wells, we’ll take his whole contract. The Blue Jays say OK, what else? You say I’ll give you Angel Pagan to be cheap and play CF for you. The Blue Jays say OK, what else? You say in order for us to take that Wells contract off your hands you choose which two of Ricky Romero, Brett Cecil or Brandon Morrow to give us, done deal.”

Given how well Wells is doing I can’t believe Toronto would kiss goodbye two young cheap talented starting pitchers just to get rid of his contract, I was shocked when Francesa said this with such conviction.

    1. GravediggerHebner

I think Mike just wants to do it because he’s a Yankee fan and those 3 young pitchers just spent the weekend silencing the All-Star laden Yankee lineup, and the prospect of that continuing to happen in the future makes him sick so he’s trying to dismantle the Blue Jays pitching staff.

    2. DNDJohan aka kistics

Mets need to send Ollie too.

    3. saltygary

Why would a competing team that is finally getting something out of one of the worst contracts do that move now. If he said Rios on the WS, then it would make a little more sense. Crazy talk…

      1. oleosmirf

mike says outlandish things like these just to keep people listening…obviously Toronto nor the Mets would make that move…

        1. saltygary

That’s why I listen to the Mad Dog.
