UPDATE: Rain Out; Real Dirty Weather Update

Update: Tonight’s game has been rained out. A day-night doubleheaded will be played tomorrow at 1:10 and 7:10pm. Tickets for tonight’s game will be honored for tomorrow’s 7:10pm game.

A warm front followed by a low pressure system are set to cross through New York tonight, and in this case that means lots of rain. My best guess is that the rain will begin by 3pm at the latest and last into the overnight hours. A rain-out looks very likely, which probably means the Mets and Padres will play a double-header tomorrow. There’s a chance they could delay the game 2-3 hours and play very late tonight, but a double-dip tomorrow just makes more sense to me. In either case, I’ll post another update as game-time draws closer (maybe around 6pm).

Easy DH tomorrow, since they already have the day game scheduled. So play that, and just hang around and play a 2nd one!

No other logical option, since the Pads don’t come back to NY this season.

And with next monday off, works out fine for the rotation. Johan gets an extra day off this week, but pitches next game on his normal 4 days rest.

Problem is how difficult it is to sweep a DH>

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

        pretty easy… just need 2 walk-off HRs

  2. stickguy

just started a cold, steady, soaking rain in SJ. If this is hitting NY in a couple of hours, and is supposed to go through the end of the evening, then this game ain’t happening.

Call it early and give the fans a break.

  3. ceetar

I’m supposed to be at the park at 6:15. Hmm.

    1. stickguy

bring a poncho and wear warm socks.

      1. ceetar

have a “the rock” orange sweatshirt and am wearing dress socks. hmm.

Maybe my seats will be inside?

Forget the weather. Big news in the draft.

In the 8 rounds held today, the Mets managed to find 4 more RHPs! I really thought the draft would have been picked clean by now, but I guess not.

And it looks like 3 more MIs, and a catcher (that wil turn 24 before the end of the year).

I really ope Harvey hits, because the rest of the draft doesn’t appear to be particularly exciting. Toby did a write up, and said it was basically a lot of low upside, but cheaply signable, older guys. Not much in the way of top talent, or his ceiling tools guys.

so get ready for a bunch more Toby Stoners in another couple of years.

    1. njstuckintx

Why are you raining on the blog too?

    2. stickguy

round 41, another RH college pitcher.

This is becoming an obsession with me at this pint…

    3. DNDJohan aka kistics

I thought Harvey was a Boras client. How can a Boras client possibly come cheap?

      1. stickguy

early first round picks never do. But he should be resonably signable, since he doesn’t really have that much leverage.

Unless he thinks he can go back to school for another year, and somehow turn himself into a top-3 prospect, but true srs. have even less leverage, and if he slides a bit in the draft, will cost himself a lot of money.

SO, IMO, Boras or not, this will be a slot pick.

    4. GravediggerHebner

      They took John Franco’s kid.

      1. Mr North Jersey

Tell me he is not a pitcher pls.

      2. wannybackstra

He won’t sign, though. He’s going to Brown.

        1. GravediggerHebner

Hmm. Chances are pretty good they knew that before they picked him. It’s one thing for them to not sign guys because they deem them too expensive (such as 2009 Magnifico or Buchanan – who the Phillies picked this year), or to draft guys they know will sign cheaply, but to draft someone who you KNOW is going to college is a complete waste of a pick.

          1. wannybackstra

That late in the draft I suppose there is as much value in PR or doing a favor for an insider as there is in just picking up some more organizational filler.

There’s a good article on mlb.com talking about all of the second and third generation draftees, most of which were taken in those later rounds, as well.

  5. metsfan4decades

Dang, that radar has the entire NY/NJ already looking like it’s under water. Just barely sprinkling here at the Jersey shore but I’ll assume the heavy rains are on their way.

I guess I’m going to get some work done tonight I’ve been putting off. Boring.

    1. DNDJohan aka kistics

yeah… sucks that we have to suffer another Mets-less night…

  6. stickguy

well, guess who they just drafted?

    John Franco.

ANd yes, that is John Franco Jr. Except this one is a HS SS.

    1. GravediggerHebner

I just noticed that 3 of their last 4 picks are HS SS. Guess they used up all the RHP.

      1. metsfan4decades

I was going to comment that with them concentrating heavily on pitchers and not much else, we’ll have a boatload of pitchers playing the field in a couple of years.

I guess there is still the international market they can get talent from. I’m assuming that’s where kids such as Flores came from….

        1. njstuckintx

          If Ankiel can do it…

      2. stickguy

and as I am reading this, they took another SS, this one from a community college, so 1 step above HS.

  7. prismo

I’d be incredibly interested if Elias or some stat business did research to find out what percentage of draftees from each round play in…100 games (50 for pitchers) in the big leagues.

    1. stickguy

saw something today that said there were currently 32 players drafted in round 30 or later (or maybe 30 from 32 on) playing in the majors.

Not sure if that includes undrafted guys too.

And there were even a few pretty name players on the list, including Ibanez.

    2. GravediggerHebner

Loosely related, mlb.com’s “big tease” to get us to follow the rest of the draft today was:

“There were 32 players on Opening Day rosters selected after round 30.”

Slightly more closely related, I watched a minor league documentary recently and a GM said that between 3% and 7% of minor league players ever reach the major leagues even just for 1 day. But that includes people not drafted too.

Most MLB teams have 8 or 9 minor league teams. I don’t know exact roster numbers for each level but I’ll just say 20 for ease of math. That’s 180 guys in the minors for each MLB team. 3% of 180 is 5, 7% is 13.

      1. stickguy

not sure of the number, but it is obviously a lot higher for anyone that makes it to a “serious” level, like AA.

every year, tons of mid-late round guys sign for chump change, and get chummed into the rookie and developmental leagues. And I imagine, quite a big chunk of them get flushed out after 1-2 years, to make way for the next round of fresh blood.

so, all those guys seriously keep the % down.

I always figured that most of these guys know they aren’t going to make a living as a pro ball player, so they take the 10K bonus, and spend a year or 2 in the minors, just for the experience. Kind of like taking a year off to backpack through Europe!

        1. GravediggerHebner

I think you’re absolutely right with your last paragraph.

I’ve been reading what interviews I can find with these draft picks and a couple of them alluded to that, saying things to the effect of “I was drafted last year but I didn’t sign and went back to school to finish my degree so I had something to fall back on.”

Unrelated, the Mets have taken at least 2 guys from U of Pacific, their coach is Ed Sprague. I had him on a fantasy team in the mid-90s.

          1. DNDJohan aka kistics

I bet ya Ed Sprague was injured and out for the season

  8. Mr North Jersey

Nice post Prismo. It’s days like this that reminds us how lucky we are to have you.

    1. Kingman 26

      Amen to that!

  9. Mr North Jersey

In an attempt to find something about Werth and his dislike of what his manager said I came across this.

In an article about the possibility that there could be a Lee vs Halladay showdown in the W.S. Phillyburbs writes that Lee could wind up on the Yankees and teams will be enticed to get him with the remaining money being owed to him somewhere around $3M but what brought a smile to my face was this line.

“That relatively affordable price tag means somewhat unusual suspects like the Twins, Rangers, Blue Jays, Rays, and Marlins will get involved. But if the Dodgers, Yankees, and Red Sox are in , Lee is going to one of the big boys. And it very well could be the Yankees.”

    Can’t Miss? I didn’t know such a thing existed.

Cool I just got my lawn ripped out, added 50 yards of loam and they just finished re-seeding it. My well can’t handle that kind of watering.

  11. rustyjr

As the man in the field – it’s raining – not hard though !

  12. stickguy

mets still adding to the stockpile of RHP.

At this point, I am pretty sure they have taken more RHP than all other positions comibned, or damn close to it.

    1. GravediggerHebner

One of the guys they took, Josh Easley, they also drafted last year. I guess he didn’t sign.

      1. stickguy

I have had the MLB feed on in the background (on the PC). Actually pretty interesting. You hear the teams make the pick, then the league guy repeat it. And lot’s of back and forth about technical issues, etc. Truly “real time” on this.

actually, it sounds exactly like they are using a system like what you use for an on-line fantasy draft.

There have also been a ton of guys announced as “redrafts”. Seems that a lot of guys do pass on the late round chump change and try again.

Harvey was a draftee in 2007 out of HS. Mid teens maybe? SO it worked for him.

        1. GravediggerHebner

I turned it off a while ago, after some conversation along the lines of “It won’t accept the pick.” But it is neat to listen to it unfold. Last night when round 30 ended the “host” said “OK can we disconnect the mlb.com audience please, teams stay on the line” and then it went dead. I guess he had some secrets for them.

  13. DNDJohan aka kistics

no game.. shucks.. i guess i’ll have to spend my evening with the mrs…. :)

  14. metsfan4decades

Just some food for thought watching the SNY programs from 5-6:30 these past two days:

    1. Most of the analysts on the DNL, Wheelhouse and Loud Mouths shows believe the Yankees are more likely to land Cliff Lee than the Mets. Never mind the fact that the Yankees probably don’t need him right now. But hey, don’t let that stop you from trying to land one of the best pitchers available come trade deadline.

    2. Most of the analysts think Hughes is a better pitcher/story than Pelfrey.
Reasoning is Pelf has struggled in past seasons and Hughes really hasn’t. Also Hughes has got the job done both in the BP and as a starter. But….does Hughes have a save working on short day’s rest in a 20 inning marathon?

I did take a look at Hughes and Pelf’s stats. I suppose you could make a case for either. Pelf has one more year in the bigs and obviously way more innings pitched as he was never used in the pen. Hughes is 2 years younger with one less year in but half of that was BP work. Makes it kind of hard to compare their body of work using apples to apples…..

    1. metsfan4decades

Oh, one guy made a really good point for leaning towards Pelf as being the better pitcher. He’s being asked to pitch this good in the front of the rotation right behind our ace. Hughes is basically the 5th starter at the back end of the rotation.

  15. stickguy

hey, say thanks to the D Backs. And Heyward on the Braves, for being too dumb to let the CF catch a ball that belonged to him.

Mets pick up 1/2 game, so only 2 out.

Possible they could get that down to 1/2 game by the end of tomorrow. But don’t tell Ken rosenthal.

Now omar, get a SP. Guthrie of Westbrook are my 2 top picks now (if they can’t get haren). From a cost/benefit standpoint (assuming they come reasonably cheap, talent wise).

Maybe he can send them 10 RHPs from the minors. We should have plenty to spare soon, once the draft picks start signing.
