good thing they took 30 more RHPs in the draft. Looks like they have a lot that need replacing.

Cora starting Game 1 today. I guess Jerry saying that Tejada will get the majority of the playing time at 2nd base, he meant literally he would get 51% of the playing time. Oh joy…..

Well, didn’t think Tejada would be playing both games.
I guess we’ll see Barajas catching game 2. The rest I’m assuming depends on what happens in game one….

well, supposedly Jerry said yesterday that he plans to start Tejada 3 out of 4 games. So splitting the DH makes sense.
Although I would still rather never see cora start. bad enough he has to PH some games.
at least he is well on his way to vesting the ridiculous option for next year.
ALthough I would have no problem if the ax’ed Jerry, and let COra earn it as the manager.

well it is a day game after night game…
apparently Jerry doesn’t want to put out the best offensive team when Johan’s pitching…

A few of the HS kids we took late already said they won’t be signing

most HS kids that get taken in the real llate rounds (home of the $1,000 signing bonus) don’t sign, right? That has always been my understanding.
the must have taken 20 or so RHPs from college, so still plenty to go around.

Correct. In most cases kids taken that late have very little incentive to sign. 2 examples of kids who did sign were Kyle Allen and Alonzo Harris.

I don’t know why they bothered taking them. I’m fairly new to paying attention to the draft but was under the impression that you would take really talented HS kids fairly early where the money would entice them to consider skipping college. In the 45th round, unless their SATs are incredibly low and they’re no good at baseball, what’s the point of signing with a major league club? Surely at worst they could go to some local community college (Josh Easley?) and try and move up in the draft the following year.
My early impression from this draft is they took so many taller-than-6-feet RH college pitchers that they’re simply hoping a couple of them blossom/harness their talent, and are counting on international signings or players already on hand to cover any other positions.

It does seem that they felt they had a lot of blossoming positional guys, but a shortage of pitchers. And they decided to just draft as many Pelf clones as possible, hoping that 1-2 might turn into the 2nd coming? But they did seem to like 6-3, 225 RHPs.
FOr the HS kids, keep in mind that they were up in the 1,200-1,500 pick range by then. So basically, anything passing for talent is long gone. Maybe a few of them would rather go play pro ball than hit CC, and maybe a few really do develop. But, a long shot.
Still, it probably looks better for the Mets to draft HS guys that don’t sign, than to stop picking after the 40th round.
It would have been nice to see them reach for a few more big talent but hard to sign guys, instead of low ceiling but happy to take chump change ones. But, they are the ones that have to polish the turds and live with the results.
Hopefully they do make a bigger splash with IFAs too this year, since it seems they will have underspent on the draft again, and they do need to add “star potential” from someplace.
Maya still looks like a good option too.

I am somewhat surprised that Maya is still unsigned. I haven’t been following that closely, I wonder if his demands are outlandish or if there is some other reason?

I am guessing the agent is trying to play the interested teams off of each other, hoping one caves and pays top $.
Also possible he was not that impressive?
I honestly don’t recall ever hearing an asking price, or any team’s offer, for him.
Chapman was a steal for the Reds though. But May should not come close to that money.

I haven’t seen a think on Maya either. I would think MLBTR would have had something but last I saw, he did the auditioning thing with several clubs going to watch.
On another note, I saw the Royals selected the great great great nephew of Shoeless Joe Jackson in the later rounds of the draft. Interesting…..
