Nothin' gets to you, stayin' fresh, stayin' cool
Despite allowing a 2nd inning 2-run homer to Mets catcher Henry Blanco that gave the Mets an early 2-run lead, Padres starter Mat Latos (6-4) stayed fresh and cool, combining with relievers Luke Gregerson, Mike Adams and Heath Bell to retire the Mets final 22 batters in a row as the San Diego Padres came back to defeat the New York Mets 4-2 in the 1st game of a day-night doubleheader.

Latos & the Padres smoked Santana & the Mets
A Jerry Hairston Jr. sacrifice fly in the 4th inning cut the Mets lead to 2-1. In the 5th they took the lead. Tony Gwynn Jr. walked leading off and 1 out later old McGrittles himself David Eckstein doubled to left off Mets starter Johan Santana (4-3), driving Gwynn home to tie the game at 2. Adrian Gonzalez singled 1 out later to plate Eckstein with the go-ahead run. The Padres added an insurance run in the 7th when Eckstein walked with 2 outs, then scored on a double by Chase Headley that knocked Santana from the game.

The Mets offense was all Diet Coke and no Mentos

Pads pitching staff virtually unhittable this afternoon.
Walks kill – as Johan found out today. No walks given up, even with the 8 hits, would have resulted in a much different score.
With the Padres, it’s hard to out pitch that staff. You just have to find a way to get some runs b/c they have very little offense.
Hopefully, we’ll come out swinging in the night cap.

hopefully Neise has good stuff tonight. But most important, the offense needs to jump on garland early and often. Get into the underbelly of the pen quickly, and keep the big guns out of play.
Hey, a guy can hope, right?
Getting swept before leaving for a 9 game road swing (with all the road baggage they carry) will not be a good thing.

The 2nd game is an excellent opportunity to get some “other” bats into the lineup, I hope Jerry takes advantage of that. Would love to see Bay sit for Feliciano or Carter, and Wright (1 for 10 off Garland) for Tatis (3 for 4). Keep Frenchy in there (5 for 10) and glad Barajas will start (7 for 21).

Don’t want to give Wright the day off, he had one yesterday. I would consider putting one or both of Jesus and Chris in there.

Everyone had a day off yesterday and Wright has already played today, he won’t be getting a day off.

What a friggin bs lineup.
Lets take out Pagan for no damn reason at all just so a career minor leaguer can play. Then the cure for Bay is to get another game off.

With the off day yesterday why do our stars need a break?

yes Pagan and Bay must be soooo tired.
i mean this is after a loss…

I wanted them to sit and miss a game not just “have a day off” I think there’s a difference.
I didn’t necessarily want Wright to sit so much as I wanted Tatis who is 3 for 4 to get into the game. But after Wright looked like crap in game 1 and knowing he was 1 for 10 against Garland coming in I felt it was a fine time to not give him the chance to “screw himself into the ground.”
But I was much more interested in Bay not playing and I got my wish for that. Seeing him in the dugout at the outset of this game going over his swing was refreshing. I look forward to him laying some pain on Baltimore this weekend after having a game off, not a night off, to do something/anything differently than he has been recently to help him shake the funk.
You and others have noted periodically on different topics that the definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing but expect different results. Simply playing Bay every game the way he is hitting is in my mind insane.

Give the Padres credit. They’re 11 games over .500 while the Mets are 3 games over .500. The Padres are a well coached team that doesn’t beat itself with sloppy play on the field. And while every manager makes a head scratching move from time to time you won’t see a veritable smorgasbord of weird moves as you see regularly with the Mets. Note I’m not talking about this specific game but rather in a general sense. The Padres scratch out runs by taking advantage of whatever breaks they get. With their pitching they should be in contention the entire season.

I think the padres are legit for being able to take the division. barring any major injuries, or of course, the FO dismantaling the team (which should not even be allowed if they are in the race).

I agree with basically everything you’ve put forth here, although I would question Bud Black’s batting Chase Headley (4 HR, 20 RBI) cleanup in 45 games much more than I would Jerry Manuel’s batting Frank Catalanotto there once.
Other than the Padres uncanny ability to beat the SF Giants (7-1 against them) what separates the Padres from the Mets is less IMO a difference in “sloppiness” at least as it translates to errors, because the Padres are the 3rd best NL fielding team and the Mets are the 4th best, but more in the kind of play that doesn’t show up in the scorebook. Their offense which on paper is utterly pathetic nonetheless makes the productive outs which the Mets offense often fails to make.
The biggest difference is the bullpens. The Mets has been sporadic, the Padres superb. The Mets actually have more quality starts (by 1) than the Padres. It’s the productive outs on offense and the superior bullpen once the starters are knocked out that gives the Pads the edge.

I also have to wonder with so many unheard of’s in their pen if the innings might catch up with them soon enough.

What helps a manager from making boneheaded moves is having a pen that can pitch full innings and is on fire right now.

Someone really needs to put Eckstein on his rear end so that he can stop being so comfortable crowding the plate against the Mets.

What’s with the B-team lineup for tonight’s game?
I understand it’s a day-night DH, but Pagan and Bay both out?

6/10/2010-5:15pm at 5:15 pm (UTC -4)
pagan probably is OK, since it can take a toll running around in CF 2 games in a day.
and bay should be getting more time off. You really think you wil lbe missing his bat?
I would worry a tad more about the OF defense. I highly recommend to neise he goes with Ks and GBs tonight.

Bay does not need time off he needs to get out of a slump. He had a day off yesterday so it’s not like it’s because he is tired. You want to drop him some in the lineup? Fine but he should be in there 9.5/10 games.

Yeah I get Bay sitting, but I don’t understand Pagan sitting. Maybe Jerry is sitting him down since he looked pretty bad in game #1.

Could be. Also get some reps in for the kids. Would prefer they do that vs. Cleveland, but Jerry’s at the helm, not I.

Heb I thought your post game title was good until I read this at AmazinAvenue:
“Padres 4, Mets 2: Latos Intolerant”

Those guys already have SB Nation status and a huge advantage with statistical analysis. If they keep taking clever headlines too I’ll have nothing.
Plus I thought “Latos Intolerant” was too obvious and dismissed it early in the afternoon.

Love the Latos / Mentos angle. Expected to see a “Big Me” from FooFighters ref, so here it is.
