The Barter Town crowd The Citi Field crowd came to see two men get to pitching. And the Citi Field crowd knows the rules: two men enter and one man leaves. Tonight two Jons took the mound at Citi Field, Jon Niese (3-2) for the home New York Mets and Jon Garland (6-4) for the visiting San Diego Padres. Jon Niese left the victor, tossing a 1-hit complete game shutout leading the Mets to a 3-0 win over the Padres. Niese was only a lead off double by Chris Denorfia in the 3rd inning away from a perfect game, and retired the final 21 batters he faced.

Aunty Entity knows it takes an aunty & an uncle to make a Niese
The Mets got the only run they would need in the 2nd inning. Chris Carter led off with a double and after a Rod Barajas single Carter scored on a Jeff Francoeur single. Rookie Ruben Tejada then etched his name in the record books by grounding into a 5-4-3 triple play to end the inning. The Mets added 2 insurance runs in the 3rd on an RBI ground out by David Wright and an Ike Davis RBI single.

Wow, just wow…
Great game, Mr. Niese. For the love of that one double….
I really thought this game was gonna be a problem with that lineup. Turns out, didn’t really matter. No one was getting to Jon tonight.
How many times do you expect to win when you hit into a triple play? Usually, that’s not a sign things are going to go your way. But no problem tonight.
Great game, great win.

Fong, Stick, Case, Grave, Rusty, MF4D, TRS, Mr North, Prismo, and all of my other best pals on here, I am telling you—we are going to be a POWERHOUSE within 2 years.
Maybe next year if we pull off a good trade and the Wilpons spend on a big-time starter.
The pieces are falling into place and germinating in Buffalo and Binghamton. We are already among the very best in the game at home.
The new window for the Mets has just cracked open this last month to begin showing a beautiful new world which we are all going to enjoy for the next 5-6 years.
Verbose opinion piece to follow soon…

They say you never get a 2nd chance to make a 1st impression. Which is bad for Feliciano 2nite when he didn’t run that ball out. At 31 you’d think he would be eager to run at anything.
I don’t want to condemn him especially when Reyes and Wright have not run out balls in the past but he has 1 foot in the grave (no pun intended) so he will have to work twice as hard to make amends.

I say we got something THIS year. Just need some fine tuning. Bay will get hot, the Mets will score runs for Johan and the BP will get better when the rotation does. Thus if Omar goes out and gets a SP this year we could be in this thing.

After we win 2 of 3 the next 2 series, I really might have to move up the schedule for success…but we MUST win some road series before getting too giddy.
We were in precisely the same spot before we went to MIL and SD.
Gotta win at least 4 of 6 in BAL and CLE.

well, that was a .500 road trip except for a K rod meltdown (highlighted by a 20 hop dribbler by eckencrappy).
4-2 over the next 6 is very reasonable. Taking 2-3 at yankee stadium (is that where they go last?) would be incredible.
5-4 over the next 9 is not horrible, but 6-3 could launch this team.

6-3, most specifically 2 of 3 in each city, launches this team without much doubt.

Glad to have you back king. Call me crazy but I’m actually excited that the division is getting stronger and younger, except for the phils. I’m a sucker for good competition.

Yes, Ichiro in RF!
I would love to have Lee, but he seems to be set on free agency….I would gladly take him if it somehow could be done without parting with much of the Junior Core. Cannot trade Niese, Ike, or Mejia.
Case, it is good to be back, and in retrospect, it was largely the presence of the horrid Mike Jacobs batting 4th that was at the root of my troubles….jettisoning him, the rancid GMJ, and Ollie has dramatically improved this team.
The new blood of Ike, Niese, and Mejia, the arrival and confidence of Pelf, the hustle of Pagan and Frenchy—it has been beautiful.
The camaraderie we saw after Ike’s HR the other day and the way Pagan blasted Niese with the whipped cream then held his arm up like a victorious boxer—something special is brewing just like we could see in 1984 (well, those of us on the wrong side of 40 remember).
I want a postseason appearance, but I just don’t want to mortgage what is going to be an amazing ride the next few years.

knog, like others said, they are good enough to make the playoffs this year. Without mortgaging the nice future.
If they do nothing else, adding a solid back rotation starter (say washburn or myers) without giving up and key prospect pieces, and they are certainly in position to make noise right now.
Or feel free to make a move for haren, since that would be a move to bolster them for this run, and to fill a major hole for the next couple of years. even if that means giving up a couple of guys (mejia, thole?)that might hurt to miss.
I just don’t really like the idea of forking over top talent for a rental like lee, and I think Oswalt is a time bomb.

true I am especially happy with Pelfrey I thought he would be doing this last season well not this exactly but pitching well for sure. I think TRS was the one that said he was still young and so far clearly it looks like Pelfrey’s maturity is finally blossoming.

Carlin said on post game that Maine will pitch a rehab start this Sunday and it’s probably he’ll return in the rotation and Taka back to the BP.
GravediggerHebner
6/10/2010-10:04pm at 10:04 pm (UTC -4)
That’s reasonable. As fine as I am with never seeing Maine (or Perez) pitch again for the Mets, the reality is they probably both will. And given that, Taka to the pen where we have seen him succeed and Maine to the rotation, where it’s been longer but we have also seen him succeed, makes more sense to me than Maine to the bullpen where we have no idea what to expect especially considering Taka has shown to be mortal in the rotation recently.
stickguy
6/10/2010-10:57pm at 10:57 pm (UTC -4)
yeah, they will both be back in the rotation at some point (barring more injury, or totally falling apart in their rehab work).
I do like the idea of taka back in the pen, but not necessarily for either of those guys.

6/10/2010-10:12pm at 10:12 pm (UTC -4)

metsfan4decades
6/10/2010-10:52pm at 10:52 pm (UTC -4)
Yes, he did. I didn’t mean to imply one rehab start and then he would return. Was just saying he’s pitching his first one this Sunday and when they deem him ready, he’ll probably be back in the rotation, with Taka back to the pen.
I agree with Grave – if we could get another reliable pitcher wouldn’t hurt my feelings if we didn’t have to hold our breath watching Maine or Ollie again. But the reality is we will be watching them start again sooner rather than later. Ollie b/c of the $$ more so than anything else and Maine b/c I don’t think they’ve quite given up on him yet….
If neither one of them shows considerable improvement second half of this year, I’d like to see them NOT in a Met uni next year….
