This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty : The Bloggerpolooza Edition” 06-10-10

Last night I was among a handful of Mets bloggers that were invited by the Mets Media Relations staff in a getting to know you enviorment, that was held in the press  room where Jerry Manuel holds both his pre and post game press conferences. The best thing about last night was the fact that I got to put the faces to the names of my fellow bloggers that I have been reading for the last three years or so , and  corresponding for the past year. Among those in Attendence was Matt ” The Father of all Mets Blogs” Cerrone, Kerel Cooper from “On The Black”  -( I got the next round at  McFaddens Kerel !). Jason Fry and Greg Prince From “Faith And Fear In Flushing” , Shannon Shark from “The Mets Police”Eric Simon from Amazing Avenue, and also Matthew Warthus from ” Always Amazing” and Caryn from “Metsgrrl” . So if you ever wondered what it was like to get a handful of Mets bloggers into one room , I would have to say that it is almost like being at a cooler version of a Star Trek convention – Everybody that attended are extemely passionate about the team, and it reflected in the many conversations that were ongoing through the hour and a half that our get together lasted.I would like to sincerely thank Danielle Parillio from the Mets Media Relations department for making last night’s event – even though last nights game was unfortunately rained out , a  success. It was gratefully appreciated Danielle !

And with that said…. ON WITH THE INFAMY !!!

Happy Birthday wishes go out to one of the best outfielders to ever come out of the Mets farm system,Ken Singleton (1947). Unfortunately all of that success came with the Montreal Expos and the Baltimore Orioles. He is currently the best announcer on the YES Network.
Sadly on this date in 1995, one of the original voices of Mets baseball, Lindsey Nelson was silenced.

New York Mets purchased the contract of pitcher, Bob Shaw from the San Francisco Giants on June 10, 1966.

New York Mets traded pitcher,Jack Hamilton to the California Angels for pitcher, Nick Willhite on June 10, 1967.

New York Mets signed free agent reliever Doug ” Hair-breath Harry” Sisk on June 10, 1980. Doug Sisk was a decent middle innings reliever through most of his Mets career, but when he was bad – LOOK OUT !!

New York Mets signed free agent pitcher, Eric Gunderson on June 10, 1993.

New York Mets traded former outfield prospect, Shawn Gilbert to the St. Louis Cardinals for reserve outfielder, Wayne Kirby on June 10, 1998.

” Mo Vaughn & Uncle Phil – seperated at birth?!?”

        1. ceetar

Supposedly there is still a ticket for me to pick up, so I suppose I’ll see you there unless they close the bridge on me or something. Where are we sitting?

          1. rustyjr

            Section 124 I think

  2. metsfan4decades

    Very cool Rusty.
I’m surprised the Mets Media Relations pays attention to such things as blogging. Because, you know, Francesa under the assumption of ‘Who reads blogs anyway’ – so if the Pope thinks it, it must be so…….

I’ve read a couple of posts from Cerrone who is always defending the blogs place in baseball today – to the point of criticizing those that apparently don’t take it seriously.

    1. rustyjr

Everyone was really cool & down to earth – cerrone thinks I should do a videoblog lol I got the face and voice for print lol

    2. ceetar

They email us the starting lineup and all the press releases and post-game notes as well. It’s pretty cool.

Francesa’s way of getting the lineup is to randomly ask his producers if it’s posted anywhere yet.

      1. metsfan4decades

Nice…you guys are definitely in the loop..

I would have liked meeting the guys from Faith and Fear in Flushing. I read Greg Prince’s book which I totally enjoyed. He’s only a few years younger than me, became a Met fan only a year later than me, so many of his Met memories I can totally relate to.

        1. Kingman 26

Wow, closest you have come to giving away your age!!

          :-)

          1. DNDJohan aka kistics

            I know her age… I believe she’s in late 20s or early 30s…

          2. Kingman 26

OK, I thought she was about 31, but somehow she remembers the 1969 Mets…..oh well, I know most women have special powers….

          3. metsfan4decades

Ah…31. I remember that age fondly.
I grew up with the TV always tuned into the NY Mets, compliments of my Dad and started actively following them in 1968. Probably gives you all a fair idea of my age.

Sad to admit but from all I’ve read here since this blog started I believe I’m probably the oldest of the regulars….

          4. Kingman 26

I sure remember age 31 fondly…I lived in Seattle and was playing in a grunge/rock/pop/punk band and lived a BIT differently than I do today, so while I remember it fondly, a few things here and there are a tad hazy…

I was 7 when I watched the Rose-Harrelson fight in the 73 NLCS and the WS with my Dad and became hooked for life.

          5. rustyjr

            ugh grunge pop
i shall name you temple of the mawg !

          6. metsfan4decades

Ha! Kistics is my new best friend and just went to the top of my X-Mas card list.

          7. DNDJohan aka kistics

            Nice!

        2. rustyjr

Yeah I hung with Greg and Jason – great guys – had Greg sign my bok

          1. ceetar

I met many of you Opening Day. Not Cerrone or Greg and Jason though. Wish work hadn’t run late and I could’ve gotten there. *curses* oh well. heh, didn’t think about bringing my faith and fear book.

          2. Kingman 26

            That was a cool book.

  3. njstuckintx

Did you find out if cerrone has a device that transcribes how he talks and it puts it into print for his posts?

  4. udontmesswthejohan

    Why was I not informed?!?!

    This is an outrage.

    http://www.crotusblog.com

  5. Kingman 26

Wow, really glad you got to enjoy that Rusty!

And damn, 15 years since Lindsey Nelson passed away…remember those jackets he used to wear which would blind everyone around him?

    SWEEP TODAY!!

Well, a split would be OK, but what momentum they would have with a sweep.

    1. ceetar

Going for a sweep of the entire homestand!

Then the big 9 game road trip. 6 games against pathetic teams. 4 games pitched by Pelfrey and Santana.

      1. njstuckintx

If there ever was a time to dispell the whole “we can’t win on the road”, it is now.

        1. Kingman 26

Amen to both of your words of wisdom!

      2. DNDJohan aka kistics

We should expect at least 4-2 against the O’s and Indians…

  6. rustyjr

If Johan throws a no hitter & niese gets a loss I’ll be content lol

    1. njstuckintx

2 no hitters is too much to ask?

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

        yes.

        1. njstuckintx

Rain Rain, go away. Come again another day.

      2. GravediggerHebner

No, the Mets are WAAAAAAY overdue for a no-hitter, 2 in 1 day would go a long way toward making up for the lack of 1 ever.

  7. DNDJohan aka kistics

Man.. that’s awesome.. I should start a blog too just so that I can be visit the media room.

  8. DNDJohan aka kistics

Oh BTW, did you see who got the win against the Bravos last night?

    1. Kingman 26

First thing my brother asked me when I came into the office this morning!

    2. metsfan4decades

      Nice..
And ouch, looks like Heyward needs to learn some fundies out there in RF. It’s the CF’s call on that ball….

  9. fongy2

    Jeez…..Doug RISK……….

    1. Kingman 26

Along with Castillo and Benitez, one of the three most unfairly maligned players in Met history.

He was no star, but he had some very good years.

      1. fongy2

        Agreed!…More like,we
        needed someone to boo
in the mid to late 80s!
I know i’m in the extreme minority BUT I felt the same way about
Benitez. He was,all-in-all a good closer who
just couldn’t be counted on in a huge spot. I have said though for some time
        that I think Billy Wags
was the exact same way..,See blowing the 4-0 lead to the yanks in Shea when we were about to sweep them and
not being able to maintain the tie game in the ’06NLCS. THOSE
are my greatest memories of Wagner.
        RE: Luis Aches&Pains…
        I’ll just say “No Comment”………

        1. rustyjr

Well disks aborted comeback in’94 was painful

          1. fongy2

            True dat! But
            my best Sisk Memory
            was opening day’83
when he came in to Save Tom Terrific’s Return!

          2. Kingman 26

            I was at that game!

            And I agree about Benitez…

        2. DNDJohan aka kistics

          “and he dropped the ball!”

  10. stickguy

The Dodgers have a rookie starting pitcher making a fast start too. Carlos Monasterios. He is now 3-0, with a snappy 2.27 era (hey, that’s Pelf territory!)

He could also be doing it for the Mets, except they sold him to the Dodgers this off season (probably for gas money for Jeffy’s Ferrari collection).

Met’s took him as a rule 5 (from the Phils, who also probably wish they had him back!). Met’s promptly sold him to the Dodgers.

    1. fongy2

      You’re just too critical Stick.
See guys like you and me just don’t understand Omar’s great masterplan!

      1. stickguy

        master plan?

For a billion $ operation, that transaction was the eqivilant of looking under the seat in your car to see if you could find a couple of quarters that fell out of your pocket.

The Mets keep claiming Maddoff had no impact, they have money, etc. But there were a few recent moves that screamed trying to save a few bucks, instead of getting more talented players back (the Wagner deal being another).

    2. DNDJohan aka kistics

Well.. I would hold off on judgment till he has had a full season.

We thought Taka was the 2nd coming of messiah after 2 starts, but came back down to earth. Same thing with Nieve last season after he had pretty good start with the Mets.

      1. stickguy

I know it is a small # of games. I was just being snarky.

    3. Kingman 26

      Met’s????

      :-)

      1. stickguy

If you are going to harp on my typos, I will ick you off the float and keep all the Blue Moon for myself.

I have no idea why I made Mets possesive there. Twice.

        eats, shoots, and leaves baby.

        1. GravediggerHebner

          ick him off?

I read that book by the way.

          1. Kingman 26

ight after he icks my ass.

          2. DNDJohan aka kistics

one key makes a lot of difference here… especially that they are next to each other…

          3. GravediggerHebner

That reminds me. My favorite Dutch airline is KLM. Just sayin’.

        2. Kingman 26

          LOL!

I have several bottles of bourbon, gin, and vodka always at the ready in the extensive bar area of the Float, so we can use the Blue Moon if we need to wash the Float before the parade….or if the guard dogs get thirsty….

        3. Kingman 26

OMG, I did not know of that book and am ordering it TODAY!

          Kingman’s Grammar Police need a refresher course…

I hope the author is OK with excessive use of the ellipsis…

          1. GravediggerHebner

You might also be interested in this. Any author with the name A. Parody has to be good.

          2. Kingman 26

Haha, that looks good…I am a major book fiend; a big part of my budget goes to Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and assorted used book stores.

  11. Mr North Jersey

Sounds cool Rusty. Of all the people you mentioned the ones I would of liked to had met most would of been Kerel Cooper and Shannon Shark.

    Joe Janis wasn’t there?

    1. GravediggerHebner

I am intrigued given the large number of Mets blogs that exist how it came down to this select group. I will probably never know but am pleased that my blog-brother was a part of it.

      1. rustyjr

Oh jeezI forgot – yes Joe was there ! Sorry Joe it was a long day

      2. trs86

It’s all about the views baby…. Well that and the King.

        1. Mr North Jersey

          Then where was Joe D?

        2. Kingman 26

          Thank you.

        3. GravediggerHebner

          You’re welcome.

        4. DNDJohan aka kistics

          huh?

      3. ceetar

I have no idea. I don’t exactly get a ton of pageviews myself (but maybe they like the positive nature of it?) and this blog is/was less than a year old.

      4. DNDJohan aka kistics

sounds like it was picked by MC…

        1. GravediggerHebner

That’s pretty much what I was saying without saying it.

          1. ceetar

could be. Could be that they send out the emails to a ton of people and based on interaction decided to invite certain individuals.

          2. rustyjr

From what I understand Matt didn’t choose who was invited .

          3. GravediggerHebner

            I think you mean:

            From what I can gather…

          4. rustyjr

            :-p

  12. Mr North Jersey

Whats up with the lineups seems like there are 2 different lineups out there 1 with Tejada and one without.

    1. ceetar

the without is the correct one.

    2. GravediggerHebner

Oh my! Did they take Tejada out of the lineup cuz he’s on his way to Houston?

      -JK

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

i thought he was going to Baltimore…

        1. GravediggerHebner

I was hoping Seattle or Houston, but Baltimore or Cleveland seem more likely. I wouldn’t wish Houston in the summer on my worst enemy.

          1. stickguy

If he is going anywhere, it should be AZ. And not to get Heilmann back.

          2. DNDJohan aka kistics

I thought Webb is still couple months away from returning… :P

        2. ceetar

He is, right after the game tonight.

          1. njstuckintx

What about to Chicago for Peavy?

          2. DNDJohan aka kistics

Peavy sucks.. not worth Tejada.. maybe Luis…

          3. njstuckintx

Nah, Warthen can straighten him out… :/

          4. rustyjr

did anyone else notice when we played milwaulkee that peterson wasn’t wearing the jacket?
