Lugo Camden Yards
A bad throw by Julio Lugo was the turning point of tonight’s game. With the game tied 1-1 in the top of the 6th inning Ruben Tejada led off with a single. Jose Reyes sacrificed him to second, then Angel Pagan singled moving Tejada to third. David Wright then hit a seeming double play ground ball to shortstop Cesar Izturis, but Orioles second baseman Lugo’s relay throw to first baseman Ty Wigginton was high. As Wigginton leapt to catch the throw, Wright touched first base safely which allowed Tejada to score making it 2-1. Lugo’s bad throw marred an otherwise excellent pitching duel between the Orioles Brian Matusz (2-7) and the Mets Hisanori Takahashi (5-2).

The Mets took the early lead when Reyes homered (his 3rd) leading off the 1st inning but the Orioles quickly tied it. In the bottom of the 1st Corey Patterson led off with a double off the right field wall and moved to third on a ground out. Nick Markakis then doubled driving home Patterson for the tie.

Leading 2-1, the Mets added an insurance run in the 8th. Jeff Francoeur led off the inning and lined a pitch over the right field wall for his 7th homer of the season and a 3-1 Mets lead. With 1 out in the bottom of the 9th Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez hit Adam Jones with a pitch, bringing pinch-hitter Matt Wieters to the plate as the tying run, but got Wieters to ground into a game ending 4-6-3 double play to preserve the victory for the Mets and Takahashi. It was KRod’s 13th save of the season. The Mets look to start this 9-game road trip 3-0 and complete a sweep of the O’s tomorrow.

Lugo Playset – LOL
Takahashi with a very nice effort tonight. I had my doubts he was gonna even make 5 innings but he proved me wrong. He was helped out by some fine defense. The defense this year, which is far superior to last year, has been helping out the pitching and paying huge dividends. Tejada looking good out there at 2nd. Oh, and another ‘An Ike’ play…as Gary Cohen hs now dubbed those pop up catches in foul territory.
Reyes and Francoeur – chicks love the long ball.
The O’s have 3 young pitching prospects they’re hoping gets the franchise on it’s feet. One was the kid who started tonight. He pitched a nice ball game for them but made just enough mistakes to give us the win.
Phils get bombed out again today but Braves just won (dang).
Let’s go for the Sweep tomorrow!

courir à la maison!
I was going to put that under the bearded lumberjack, perhaps I should have.
That leaping, falling away from the play throw by Tejada was pretty special. The kid’s got MLB defense right now.

Tejada does look like he can field. Now just needs to get his average above the Cora line (formerly the GM jr line).

missed a good game I guess while out at my bowling league. So much for the not winning on the road. And if Minn. could have gotten a run in the 9th, Mets might have been 1/2 game out.
At least the Cheatin’ Phils got blown out again.
Now, Lets get the sweep tomorrow.
someplace today I read a recap on the teams the Mets have played on the road so far, and except for the Brewers, it was mostly good teams, and the Nats when they were hot.
Hopefully they go on a nice road roll now. IMO, the 9-18 start was more of a fluke than anything truly meaningful for the year.

BALTIMORE — The Mets on Friday requested release waivers on outfielder Gary Matthews Jr., who was designated for assignment on June 4. The move was announced on Saturday.
Matthews hit .190 with one RBI in 36 games with the Mets. He was acquired from the Angels on Jan. 22 with cash in exchange for reliever Brian Stokes.
The June 4 move gave the Mets 10 days to waive, trade or release Matthews. Release waivers, which can only be requested during the first 10 days of the DFA period, will expire on Tuesday.

Was, Fla & Phi all lost too. The Mets chose an excellent time to go 8-2 over their last 10 games, everyone except Atl (5-5) is under .500 in their last 10.

LOL…Frenchy on the post game show when they commented to him this was the first time they won back to back road games since July of last year….
He laughs, said something like – ‘Yeah, we took a cab over here today. David mentioned they hadn’t won back to back road games in almost a year.’ Frenchy then commented: ‘Rod said, yeah, we just suck, and we all laughed…
This team is loose, this team is confident, this team is playing crisp games with very good SP, and making their at bats count. Here’s to it continuing for a good, long while….

That’s pretty funny Frenchy, except for the Cab part.;)
Could you imagine…I’m breaking into a sweat just at the thought.

Just got back from the game – my first and only of the season, and possibly last Mets game until 2012. So…I’m extremely glad I got to see a victory, and the rare clinching of a road series! Let’s Go Mets!
