This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty : The ” Mets Scalp The Tribe ” Edition 06-16-10

Well the Mets drive to get to a .500 road record got one step closer to reality with their 7-6 come from behind win against the mediocre Cleveland Indians last night. Johan Santana, looked lost in his first three innings of work, giving up four runs before finally reverting to the Santana that we know and love. Both Jose Reyes and David Wright continue to ride hot streaks, which we all know is possibly the biggest key to the Mets success in their recent years, and rookie sensation, Ike Davis blasted his eighth home run of the season which proved to be the turning point of the game.
And of course this wouldn’t be a true Mets game if there wasn’t some late inning drama attached to it. I don’t know why Frankie Rodriguez likes to be cutesy when he comes into a save situation, but giving up that two run monster blast to uber scrub – Shelly Duncan made my blood run cold ! But a win is a win and I must admit i’ll take them anyway my team can get them. Extra thanks go out to both the Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees for dispatching both the Phillies and the Braves for know we are just a half game out of first place !!!
Oh and on another happy note, The Mets have released Garry Matthews Jr., essentially throwing him onto the scrap heap. Wish I could say I’m gonna miss you Garry, but I’d miss Chipper Jones before i’d miss you !

” It’s not hard to beat this tribe !!”

And with that said….. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!

Celebrating Birthdays today:

Reliever from the ’72 team, Bob Rauch is 61 (1949) .

One time highly touted Mets pitching prospect, Calvin Schiraldi is 48 today (1962) .If it wasn’t for him we would have never been able to obtain Bobby Ojeda. And when you think about it , we possibly would never been able to beat the Red Sox in ’86 if it wasn’t for his infamous meltdown.

Baltimore Orioles claimed reserve outfielder,Rich Becker of the New York Mets on waivers on June 16, 1998.

New York Mets signed free agent Heath Bell on June 16, 1998. Oh if only we knew what this guy would turn into one of the better closers in the National League, we might have made it to the post season in ’07 and “08.

And Mo Vaughn got married in secret yesterday. His blushing bride was none other than ………

                                                                                            Mimi Bobeck !!!!

Congratulations to the happily rotund couple !!

    I wish I could say I wasn’t old enough to have remembered F-Troop in it’s hey-day….

This is definitely not your past few years NY Mets. Starting pitchers battling with less than best stuff….offense battling to come from behind, defense stellar in the field. This is finally a very well rounded team. Get another SP, Omar.

KRod….He’s always put men on base in his career but normally hasn’t allowed many to score. I believe he’s got a slight loss of velocity on his FB, which I don’t get for someone that young. He seems to throw it less than he used to for the out. Or maybe the opposition is just getting around on it better? Either way, I’m with Rusty – as long as he gets the save, I don’t care how he does it. Good thing we had a 3 run lead in the 9th…..

Oh yeah my heart stopped when that troll hit that homer off k-rod

It would have been tied had we not got that called 3rd strike on their catcher. Where are the rolaids?

        1. rustyjr

Best endorsement deal for him – tums or rolaids

Milk of Magnesia, any over the counter drug for heart palpatations, whiskey, vodka, pabst, rolling rock, etc… there are plenty of opportunities for the lad.

I regularly check out Amazin Avenue’s post game wrap up after every game, just for Howard Megdal’s daily game poem. They are really quite clever and touch on some highlights of the game. From last night’s game:

Mets continue their rampage of terror
Over awful teams who commit many an error
Wright takes NL RBI lead, in MVP mix
Guess Mets don’t need to find him a fix
Santana staggers, survives, a cause for alarm?
Questions abound on his soundness of arm
Ike Davis boomed home run that looked like a punt
So why in the hell did Jerry ask him to bunt?!?

Btw 2 best lines in t.v history
we heckowie’s are lovers – not fighters

OMG, you have found the PERFECT bride for Mo!!

    1. rustyjr

It was either Mimi or drew Carey lol

    2. njstuckintx

I hope their reception is an all you can eat buffet.

        It’s a trough

Do the mets figure out the 8th inning? Seems like feliciano has the edge.

I caught a Phil Hughes interview on MLB network. He was saying how being in the pen last year helped him this year because as a reliever you have to throw strikes which is why he’s pitching so well now.

I wonder if mejia will benefit from pitching in the pen and should stay up here instead of heading to the minors.

    1. Kingman 26

That is a great thing to hear from Hughes….at this point, it is so very hard to say about Mejia. Maybe the team is changing its stance and secretly thinking of him for the 8th next year, then to replace KRod after that.

Regardless, the Joba comparisons are annoying and meaningless. Joba is a dunce and probably is just dramatically overrated.

      1. CaseStreet

I could see mejia getting starts in some winter league and then in spring training too.

    2. ceetar

The Mets will never ‘figure out’ the 8th inning while Manuel is here. he’s too fickle.

Wow, shocking that throwing strikes works. *rolls eyes* Hopefully the Mets can impart that message to Mejia without him having to figure it out on his own.

      1. Kingman 26

Manuel has done a completely outstanding job over the past month.

Whining about him today is truly ridiculous.

The team’s fundamentals are 100% improved over last year….the lineup changes have resulted in a much more productive lineup which has also put just about everyone in a position to succeed….the team is hustling and erasing deficits and never giving up….We have gotten more than we could have dreamed of from Dickey, Pelf is becoming a star, Niese seems finally on track, and the rotation has been unreal.

        1. rustyjr

Wow kong that’s high praise coming from you

        2. njstuckintx

King Kong, Is that due to Manuel or in spite of him? Serious question.

When teams seem to be hitting on all cylinders, they can make even Dusty Baker look like he knows what he’s doing.

And as a comical side, when you put every conceiveable combination of batting order out there and eventually 1 sticks where the players are clicking, I wouldn’t say Manuel is a genius. just sayin…

          1. Kingman 26

If he gets blamed when we look like a sloppy garbage team, as we did from about August 1–mid May this year, he must receive credit when the team is playing sharp, crisp ball; hustling nonstop; coming back from deficits regularly; and looking like a bunch of guys who really like each other and cannot wait to get out there and win again.

            Makes sense, no?

          2. njstuckintx

            Makes sense.

        3. Kingman 26

Well, last year the team played horrible fundamental ball, and in the spring Jerry said fundamentals would be stressed. The team is playing fabulous fundamental ball, in pretty much all ways.

After the sham cleanup hitters we saw the first month, the team jettisoned Jacobs and Catalanotto, and brought Ike up (wisely after giving him a month in AAA) and eased him into a spot which he seems very fit for. In addition, he admitted the mistake of Jose batting 3rd, he has switched Wright and Bay which makes obvious sense as Wright clearly is a number 3 hitter, and he has also shuffled the lower part of the order depending on how hot or cold Frenchy is.

He and Warthen have done what any reasonable observer must consider an outstanding job with the pitching staff. No one can fix Ollie and Maine.

The team is a half game out of 1st, with no Beltran, with Jose just coming around, with Bay’s power numbers way below average, and with our number 3 and 4 starters gone after being disasters.

And for the “chemistry” folks, this team truly appears to like each other more and more, they are clearly playing hard and hustling 99% of the time, they do not play dead and mail it in after an early deficit as we have seen in recent years, and they never give up.

ALL of this must be attributed at least somewhat to Jerry.

He is a better manager than we thought.

          1. njstuckintx

I have to agree with you that when a team is doing well, the manager does need to get some credit, as he’ll most certainly get the blame when they are sucking. So, I’ll give kudos to him based on they’re playing well. That said, I can’t get out of my mind the way he was handling the team early in the season with out cleanup hitter experiment and how he continues to use the bullpen.

So, to sum up, I’ll give him credit, begrudgingly.

          2. Kingman 26

Hey, I was a negative creep for the first month of the season; watching Jacobs bat 4th was, in all seriousness, the worst thing I have seen in years. I wanted Manuel fired and could not even watch when Jacobs and Matthews were starting–other teams’ garbage is not what I like to see in the orange and blue.

Obviously, Jerry has more going for him than we thought.

As for the pen–we don’t exactly have the 69 or 86 Met bullpen roster out there. Seriously. We have KRod and Feliciano and Mejia and a crapshoot. And Feliciano is still questionable against righties.

        4. CaseStreet

king, I think you need to stay off the Gangsta Kool Aid :)

No doubt Jerry gets props for the team playing good, but he still is a crappy manager. Hopefully, he won’t cost us any big games.

          Torre and Honeycutt, please.

          1. Kingman 26

But the Gangsta Kool Aid is really delicious and is an excellent accompaniment to just about any Tupac, Jay-Z, Nas, or Eminem CD….

  5. DNDJohan aka kistics

Indian’s shortstop is terrible. Their entire infield is terrible. Mets should bunt more and force them to make plays.

    1. njstuckintx

To bunt more, we just need to have the leadoff man get on first base. That’s an automatic bunt situation in these parts, no? ;)

      1. ceetar

Manuel’s bunted like crazy lately. Reyes has been on base to lead off the game in like 6 straight..
