Post Game: Mets & Dickey Overcome 2 Passed Balls, Sack Tribe

Record setting Dickey

Record setting Dickey

New York Mets starter R.A. Dickey (5-0) set a franchise record, becoming the first Met pitcher ever to go 5-0 in their first 6 starts, going a strong 6 and overcoming two errors and two passed balls en route to a 6-4 victory over the Cleveland Indians.  Pedro Feliciano, Elmer Dessens and Francisco Rodriguez (15th save) finished up.

The Mets scored thrice in the 1st inning off Indians starter Jake Westbrook (4-4).  Jose Reyes led off with a single and Angel Pagan followed with a single of his own.  After David Wright struck out, Ike Davis singled pushing Reyes across the plate and Pagan to third base from where he scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Jeff Francoeur.  A single by Chris Carter moved Davis to third base.  Henry Blanco then singled to drive in Davis and the Mets had a 3-0 lead after half an inning of play.

The Indians took advantage of a passed ball in the 2nd inning.  Travis Hafner led off with a single and advanced to second on a ground out.  He moved to third on Blanco’s first passed ball then scored on a single by Jhonny Peralta making it 3-1 Mets.  They got another run in the 3rd.  With one out Shin-Soo Choo singled, moved to second on a ground out, then scored on a fielding error by second baseman Ruben Tejada on a ground ball hit by Hafner and after 3 it was 3-2 Mets.

In the 4th inning the Mets extended their lead.  Jesus Feliciano, playing left field to give Jason Bay‘s bruised quad a rest, led off with a walk.  Tejada sacrificed him to second.  Reyes then hit a flare to shallow left that fell in front of Shelley Duncan who then threw it to third base keeping Feliciano there as Reyes took second.  Somewhat surprisingly the Indians then intentionally walked Pagan to bring up Wright with the bases loaded and 1 out.  Wright grounded into a fielder’s choice, forcing Pagan out at second as Feliciano scored.  Davis then singled driving in Reyes and it was 5-2 Mets.

Blanco allowed his 2nd and final passed ball of the game in the bottom of the 4th but the Indians failed to score.  But in the 5th Choo singled then Carlos Santana doubled him to third from where he scored on a ground out by Hafner to make it 5-3 Mets.

In the 7th Feliciano relieved Dickey.  After Choo grounded out, Santana doubled off the wall in center then scored on another RBI ground out by Hafner and the Indians trailed by 1, 5-4.

The Mets added an insurance run in the 8th off reliever Chris Perez.  With 2 outs Tejada singled then scored on a Reyes RBI triple making it 6-4.  Mets closer Rodriguez allowed Choo a 1 out single then a stolen base in the 9th but struck out Indians slugger Hafner on a 3-2 pitch to save the series sweep and bring the Mets to 6-0 on their current road trip as they head to the Boogie Down.

HAHA!! Man, how the hell DO you do it?

You saved the day with that 4th picture.

And remember, as Patches says: Dodge, duck, dip, dive, and…..dodge!

    Jer-RY! Jer-RY! Jer-RY! Jer-RY!!!!!!

    :-)

Seriously, I am at the point where I sit here and refresh the page after the game ends just to see your postgame.

Have a great night everyone, and remember to vote for Jerry for manager of the year early and often!

OK, OK, manager of the month. Gotta start somewhere.

    1. oleosmirf

has jerry had to do anything this entire road trip…man AL managing is so much easier

      1. stickguy

well,he put in the closer a few times.

Oh, he pinch hit for the DH twice, which is probably more than any AL team has all season.

and he even managed to find a couple of opportunities to sacrifice.

    2. Mr North Jersey

LoL, you sure are painting yourself into a corner but hey it’s your corner. ;-)

      1. Kingman 26

        :-)

It’s a really nice, comfy corner right now.

Hey, what can I say. I still think Davey Johnson never should have been fired!

Met managers who win are not a big group. I would love to see it gain another member.

    6-0 on current road trip.

    7 Game winning streak.

    10 That’s Right! 10 games above .500

What can you say about Jose Reyes tonight? He was performing a clinic out there. I was watching the Indians feed of the game and they could not heap enough praise on Reyes from his Defense to his smile You would of thought it was the Mets feed.

Dickey once again battled 7 hits 3 runs 2 earned but gave up only 2 walks and 7 strikeouts.

On a night with no Bay and where Wright and Francoeur are a combined 1 for 9 and leave a total of 8 men on base. The Mets still score 6 runs and have a total of 14 hits.
    Just WoW!!!

    Enjoy the ride….

Right now it’s not even battling for Dickey, it’s dominating. Wow what a pickup he has been so far.

      1. Kingman 26

        Hey, you are back!

Was just about to email you.

Nice to see you join the party.

Yeah went on vacation and came back straight into basketball camp.

      2. metsfan4decades

        There he is….

And you’ve got that right. RA giving credit to advice given by Warthen tonight on making in game adjustments when he was struggling early that he feels will serve him well going forward. Said Warthen told him to speed up the knuckleball some tonight b/c Warthen saw he didn’t gave much control early on. Hey, whatever works. Just keep on doing it.

        1. stickguy

warthen had to be just making that up. But hey, if it worked, no problem.

          1. Kingman 26

Warthen’s just angling for a bust next to Jerry’s on the Float.

  4. Mr North Jersey

Wright ties Kranepool for 4th on all-time #Mets list with 614 RBI. HoJo is next up at 629 and Piazza with 655.

Not for nothing, but I beat both Madge (or however you spell his freaking name) and the Mets twitterfeed with that tidbit. :-D

    Head to the Boogie Down….

As Johnny Franco said on post game: ‘it was the Jose Reyes show tonight’.

You know it’s a good game when you see that Reyes smile.

RA Dickey is 5-0. That’s 5 wins out of 6 starts. At what point does everyone stop saying he can’t sustain this?

The best part of this offense, these runs scored, is almost everyone is contributing. It’s not just one guy carrying the team while most others struggle. It’s everyone, and different ones, on any given night. Hitting, hustling, stealing, sac flies, whatever needs to be done, they’re all doing it.

Only down side is the Braves and Phills are doing their best effort to keep up. Dang…you think those AL teams could have helped us out here this series.

    Onto Yankee stadium.

    1. stickguy

yeah, tampa and the yankees really let us down this week.

Well, yankees better make up for it by playing like crap against the mets too.

Amazing to think that the mets could (but of course, won’t) go into yankee bandbox and get swept, and still have a 6-3 road trip!

  6. Kingman 26

Anyone listening to Dickey’s attributing tonight to coaching?

    And giving specifics?

And Warthen helped Pelf learn the pitch that is making him a star….

I will ride this righteous horse and ride it hard.

    1. metsfan4decades

Yes, I heard it. RA giving props to Warthen noticing that problem early on in this game and giving him tips to add speed to the knuckleball. RA tried it, it worked, he was impressed and said he’ll be putting that in his memory banks.

    2. trs86

Kingman, I love you man but you are for sure bi-polar. LOL.

      1. Kingman 26

        LOL!

No, I was just not myself as far as the Mets are concerned for a total of about 5–6 weeks, from the very end of March until early May. In retrospect, it was hugely due to the presence of Jacobs and Matthews. I just could not stomach them in a Mets uni. Ollie and Maine were not helping.

Seriously TRS–other than that 5–6 week period, have I not been consistent in my Met-related views for the years we have known each other?

        1. trs86

          Yeah

Bi-polarism often shows itself late in a Mets fan’s life.

          1. Kingman 26

Ha! Hey, I am only 43! And a young 43 dammit.

          2. trs86

Yeah but that’s Mets fan years. So you are actually 210.

          3. Kingman 26

            OK, you got me!

            I DO remember 1977-1983 way too well….

  7. metsgirl31

Sorry I missed being in the Dugout tonite for all the “Dickey” jokes but…WOW! This team is showing up everyday. SWEEP!!! So excited and am looking forward to them continuing this weekend.

    LGM!!!

    1. stickguy

gonna be some serious hot and muggy for the day games. I think sunday could be pushing 100.

might work in the mets favor, with all the old guys on the yankees!

too bad dickey isn’t pitching this weekend though.

man oh man, taking at least 2-3 this weekend would be so sweet. especially since atlanta gets the soft touch royals.

      1. metsfan4decades

        LOL. ja ja ja..

    2. GravediggerHebner

I’d do that but I’m still busy finding pornographic words in the post game title…hours of fun, but exhausting. I need a snack and a nap.

      1. Kingman 26

Just watch Boogie Nights a couple more times…will give you weeks worth of material.

        1. GravediggerHebner

If only it were Saturday night and Dickey were pitching against Oregon State…

          1. Kingman 26

He’d be out with Chest and Brock getting some of that Saturday Night Oregon State Mascot!

  9. Kingman 26

    Next 22 games:

    3 at Skanks
    3 vs Tigers
    3 vs Twins
    3 at Marlins
4 at Nats (Strasburg Sun July 4 if he goes every 5th game and no rainouts)
    3 vs Reds
    3 vs Braves

I say 13 wins in the next 22 and it is seriously time to start thinking playoffs.

    1. stickguy

      why wait until then?

And, they get the twins, tigers and (I think) the braves at home, so that is a plus.

but, 13-9 would be really good over this stretch. That would put them 14 over in late July.

even if they went 11-11 in this stretch, they would be in quite good shape.

start with 2-3 this weekend, they they only need to go 11-8 to get your record.

      1. trs86

Good news in that stretch we get the Marlins and Nats… OK should be good news.

        1. stickguy

well, don’t forget the key point.

all those other teams are getting the mets!

          1. njstuckintx

            w00t w00t! Fear the Mets.

      2. GravediggerHebner

Well the Mets get the Twins, Tigers, Reds & Braves at home. Their away records are not intimidating: Twins 15-15, Tigers 13-19, Reds 14-13 & Braves 18-21. The Mets at least on paper should fare well in the home portion of this upcoming schedule, and hopefully this weekend in the Bronx won’t wipe out the traction they’ve gained on the road.

  10. CaseStreet

Gotta find a way to keep this thing going. Teamwork is a beautiful thing.

I’ve said it before, this team needed to surround the core with a good supporting cast. The addition of pagan, Davis, frenchy and barajas has been tremendous.

Add to that pitching, speed and defense (and lots of hitting) and the mets are simply amazing.
